I challenge anyone reading this to provide an actual, thorough and objective, definition on what “soul” is. No vague “its when the devs out love and friendship into it” answers and NO EXAMPLES (an example is not a definition).

Soul is literally high contrast

Something that, in its originality and execution, evokes the feeling of the sublime or divine.

Based and truepilled

Who (or how many) needs to feel this for a game to be considered to have soul?

Just me

NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN

It's subjective, a game will never objectively have soul or not, it's up to your own appreciation.

>Soul
>Brap and scat fetishes

Ok, i'll stay on the modern ''soulles trash'' like Odyssey.

for me, it's soulless sterile manufactured generic garbage

Damn, the left truly looks souless.

Quit trying to push this "only games working against console/gen limitations are good" bullshit

Bastion and Transistor would be the prime examples for me. Also God Hand.

See, Walter Benjamin talks about the "aura" in art: since we're at a time where producing art is akin to a mechanical/industrial job, this "aura" of originality (the soul of art) is lost. He's a pre-Frankfurt School kinda-marxist-theologician-philosopher, so it has a critique a capitalism on his writings, and a appeal to the sublime in his works.

I'm not saying that games shouldn't be made with the objetive of making money, but still, there's something when an artist (game devs in this case) which makes the game better when their job is not just a "reflection" of the "get money" mindset.

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the most soulful Mario games we've gotten in years, you dumb shit.

90's CG and lighting is fucking terrible, will never hold up to today's standards. Nothing is soulful about it besides your fucking nostalgia for things that looked like garbage. Yes, at the time it looked impressive. Doesn't mean it is good. Game on the right was full of soul.

also, the description misrepresents the art. That shit was pre-rendered bullshot concept art for what the game was supposed to look like in the 90's, OoT got the same thing.

Art has always been financed by rich people who either want a certain message through art put out there or want a return on the investment through selling the art. Most of the time, an artist is too poor to fund his own work, so he needs the backing of a rich man or group to make anything. This has extended to today, where practically everyone, except painters/illustrators, needs the backing of investors to produce art. Almost every case of this relationship will want a return on their investment, so it is natural that written stories, film, music, and games are, at least partially, designed to make money even if the core of it is a personal creative work. In short, the artist-investor relationship has almost always existed.

Right looks better tho

>SOUL looks like Unreal Engine 4 demo
>Soulless looks like a distinct art-style with new and imaginative locations and art-styles
So SOUL for you is realistic effects, and SOULLESS is cartoonish ones, huh?

>left is literally just 64 with better graphics
>right is actual gameplay
Also every 3D Mario game is good

Old gaeym good
Neuw gayeem BAD

This one I'll actually agree with, the All Stars sprites and soundfont were all not as good as the original.
