Play ayesha since those other two are game #2 and #3 from their series. Ayesha is the first one from that series. Too bad it's the ps3 version though, no original audio for you. Otherwise it's a great atelier game.

Ayesha is the first game of its subseries so you did okay there. Totori and Meruru are sequels to Rorona though, which in and of itself is a tricky prospect on PS3 because you should buy the soft remake of Rorona on PS3 and NOT the original. Those are still playable, you'll just be missing out on some stuff.

What sticks out to me aside from the graphics in general is how many NPCs there are. Atelier has generally been devoid of NPCs outside of town and even in town there were never that many, so this is a pretty stark change. Hopefully they'll at least have some interesting dialogue.

The time limits alone aren't, no, but the time limits giving the games proper pacing were one of many reasons the earlier games were good and the newer games aren't. But I personally have hope for Ryza.

Because that's completely infeasible because you're talking about a system that affects the entire structure of the game. Thinking it's as simple as something that can just be toggled off and nothing is lost is exactly why Sophie is so tedious.

The ability to turn the time limit off would be a welcome one if they decided to put them back in, but then they would have to worry about how to work it both ways so the game flows naturally which isn't easy to do.

The actual part where you configure your materials to achieve your desired item, effects and traits is different in Ryza. However, the part where you're forced to craft 10 bombs for progression is the same. World map and traveling is extremely reminiscent of Lulua. Not much detail about how to see character events, but recent Ateliers (including Lulua) have very lax requirements to see them, unlike Arland. Expecting it to be pretty lax for Ryza.

I don't get why people think that a time limit is the only way to give the game pacing, Sophie had god awful pacing but that wasn't because of the lack of a time limit. It was because there wasn't anything in place to pace the game, there are plenty of ways to give the games decent pacing without one that annoys a large majority of the fan base.

I didn't play Ateliers past Sophie because Sophie mindbroke me on the franchise.

It's the proto version of Atelier Lulua if you've played that one. You can plat without doing all of the tasks in the Ambition Journal, not to mention not needing to do them all just to finish the story. So it's pretty well-paced.
