Assuming your rare/mythic is a basic land, uncommon Chandra is the best card in the pack, though Brineborn Cutthroat is a cool build around, and then you hope Faerie Miscreant tables. After that it’s Raise the Alarm, Pack Mastiff, then the rest is kinda trash

Awakened Inferno > Novice Pyromancer > Brineborn > Raise The Alarm > Undead Servant > The rest

God damn draft is a shit format since they introduced mythic rares. You either get one of the bombs and win or you don't and lose. That and and the original sin of making dual lands rare in every set since 1993 just ensures its always going to be a shit format. Learning how to actually build decks is more important than pulling bombs. Ive seen decks with 0-1 rares dumpster entire drafts because shitters get tunnel vision at multiple rares they cant build a cohesive deck around.

No you aren't making a point you just said whoever goes first in chess has an advantage like magic and i said ok. You are comparing apples to half-apples half-oranges anyways. Chess tournaments involve multiple games, have tons of draws and do shit like use black wins for tie breakers. Wins in chess towards the end have more to do with player fatigue than anything. MtG is more analagous to poker. Indivdual hands are very luck based and the mark of skill is winning more hands over time. Unfortunately in MtG draft these days one player has jokers in their deck and one doesn't.

It works man, but it's neither fun nor competitive.
That said being able to mainboard 3 wands and have 4 karns to find a 4th, plus having two standard sorins that are both powerful in their own right means that it is definitely a lot more viable than it used to be.

I've been out of the magic scene for the while, and I thought I heard they stopped doing core sets? What's going on with magic? Seems like they keep changing it.

They've been experimenting with release structures, probably at the request of daddy hasbro. The good part is there are more often and more interesting non-standard releases, the bad is that they are pushing way too many cards out, too fast, and creative is clearly stretched thinner than it has ever been.

The greed monster is awake and corporate are polishing the standard product down to a dull grey sheet. I really liked Unstable and Modern Horizons seems cute I guess. The game seems to be doing well overall, but I worry about sustainability.

Yeah, we had a stretch of like 3 to 4 years where there were no core sets. Good times. Core sets are always boring in how simple they are. The newbies didn't like it, though, the game was bad at catching new players without them, so they had to come back.
