They were still distinct in Japan. SMB enemy was Kuribo while SMW enemy was Kuribon.

Mario nostalgists are the worst. None of his games were ever that amazing, they are just remembered more fondly because he came before all the actual fantastic ones that outdid Mario. DKC and Yoshi shit all over SMB3/W and later Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie did the same for Mario 64.
