It is sort of fun. Has little to do with the first two though.

3 is soulless for me.
a good way to summarize it is singleplayer WoW in the gothic universe.
the places are rather empty except the towns and the places nearby
quests are pretty bland and often come down to kill X, get X etc.
the combat system got pretty dumbed down, letting you beat up everything just spamming left or right mouse click (the bows and crossbows were donne rather fine tho)
your actions dont feel as powerful as in the other games, you dont really have any rituals or people to please to get into a faction, you just get reputation by doing quests and get their armor when having enough reputation (it still lets you move freely in other places like going around in an orc controlled town in a rebel armor (even though they are in war with each other and you should get fucked by orcs on the spot)
i didnt finish the game, but i really couldnt force myself to finish it even just for the story, which is pretty sad for me.
TL;DR mediocre game overall, but a pretty bad gothic game.

Ignore the haters, it's something you should try for yourself, if only to take in the gorgeous visuals and atmosphere, the music is absolutely STELLAR

Gothic 2 is better, 1 feels like cancer half the time cause of the combat

Fable: the lost chapters, vampire the masquerade, thief 1/2, planescape torment, myst, fallout 1/2/new vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1/2. These are off the top of my head, I guess some old pokemon games have soul and zelda games. Also check out Mata Nui online game (2001) old bionicle browser game but I remember it having so much soul in it. Also recommend more games with soul.

I fucking hate how they rewrote the characters, their personalities are nothing like in the early games. I can see why they did that (you can kill literally everyone and still finish the game) but i still hate it. Get the fanpatch if you want to try it out.

I would rather recommend getting Risen, that one feels like a true followup to G2. Sequels ain't that bad either.

a gothic remake would actually be pretty nice. the game would really benefit from better graphics and improved controls, but not changing anything else.

Apparently, The Witcher 3 is the closest thing you cang get for a Gothic sequel.
