The first still tells a great story and constructs a memorable universe. The second still gives you a lot of engaging vignettes with great characters and fun combat. The story in the second is shit and the world building is absent but at least the ending is satisfying within the context of its own game. ME2 was a misstep but it didn't piss people off or ruin the franchise like three.

ME1 is a fun game with compelling choices, character building (both in dialogue and in skills/stats), and a bunch of content.
ME2 is for normies and is just a mediocre shooter.

for what it is mass effect 2 holds up great, but its not a seqeul to mass effect at all.
original ME is perfection no matter how much time passes.
