The Iliad has a lot of great action scenes, but in between we recognize the futility of the war. Troy will ultimately be swept away and turned to ruin, thousands of men and women die far from home in a conflict they don't have any real stake in, even Achilies' pursuit of vengeance doesn't bring him any kind of peace.
