If these games released solely on their own merits. They wouldn't sell nearly as much as they actually do especially the one's with goblin faces. What makes these games sell isn't quality. It's a thing called perception.
You're digging into certain parts of psychology here but a short summary version is this.
Perception is controlled by two main methods, marketing/advertising and evidenced praise.
The first is obvious. These games sell millions, why? Because everyone and their dog knows the game exists. There are posters, billboards, ads on buses, at bus stops, the list goes on. They also target the audience most attuned to popularity(kids and teens) so despite a game like GoW being rated 18 and up(in my country) there were ads running near elementary schools, near the toy section of places like Target, huge ads around shopping complexes. What this does is creates the perception that this is a huge thing that you need to get in on because it's everywhere.
The second part, evidenced praise, is much like it sounds. Praise that is evidenced or put simply, praise without knowing why it's praised. Those 10/10s, "game of the generation", look at all these scores, it's this huge IP(even if it's never been heard of they'll still say that). Evidenced praise is basically that endless praise from journos and shills that talks up the good points and any negative point is taken as just being mad they don't have it even if the negative is actually important or relevant and would make people question purchasing the game. They make it sound like if you don't own this game you're missing out on something huge.
This is how they get all those sales, they use names, they talk things up, never mention a single bad point or gloss it over to sound not as bad.
That's the "everyone" they're targeting.

I was at least hoping they'd play a self aware card because when the kid dies and they started playing all the sad music I thought it was funny as shit with how forced it was. Then I realized it was being 100% serious and it just got more boring from there. Also it was the first game I played with magnetic melee sliding, walking exposition scenes which were the pinnacle of fucking boring and outright sleep inducing, the guns felt like shit to use, the only thing of substance that came from it was an obscene amount of leg humping.
The designs had 0 impact on that. It was just trying to make you care way too hard and the gameplay which felt less frequent than it probably was, was fucking terrible.

It isn't. When I see a game I look at what mechanics there are. Japanese games, especially niche ones, detail their mechanics including the experimental ones that aren't proven to work well yet. If those sound interesting I'll buy the game. All character designs do is get me interested in the game but at the end of the day the game has to sell itself in some way. I have to admit I only played the game, never got into RPGs. I still don't know what kind of opinions I parrot. For A VIDEO GAME the part until you get a kingdom is nice. There's some shit to optimize, spells to cast, fights to win. Some of the were quite difficult. Played it back2back with Infinity engine games and really - it wasn't shabby.
