Why is FF7 the only game that has managed to come close to OOT’s level of critical acclaim?

FFXV is better than both OOT and FF7.

advertising budget, FF7 was one of the first games that was plastered on absolutely anything and everything before hype culture was really a thing, that on top of having a very memorable and good story made a lasting impression

all three are shit

the times, jack
when those games came out, not only were they groundbreaking, the amount of ground broke was beyond unprecedented.
since then, the territory covered by a single game's release has not compared to those 2.
doesn't look like it'll ever happen again, either.

the closest a modern game release has come compared to those two is probably dark souls.

why do people always bring up advertisement?
the game sold itself.
ads dont make the game.

>incomplete game with a Hold O battle system
>better than anything

15 is worse than fucking 13, which is an accomplishment

The 13 trilogy is second only to 7

This, except Dark Souls is garbage & didn’t even win GOTY. Resident Evil 4 is the closest we’ve seen to a game having impact on the level of MGS1, FF7, SM64 & OOT

barry leave
they were both the first mainstream examples of games which felt like living, breathing worlds. of course they were far from being the first true examples, but brainlets can't into pixels so what can ya do

>Final Fantasy VII cost around $45 million to make, and had a U.S. marketing budget of around $100 million
it was one of the first games to have a marketing budget grossly larger than the actual development budget itself

Metroid Prime, Shadow Of The Colossus, Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy VI are better than both of those games

>awards mean game is good
behold, the best game ever to be released in 2003, standing resplendent above GTA Vice City, Wind Waker, SoulCalibur 2, and KotOR. forever will this eternal darling, beloved by critics and true fans alike, be held in the hearts of man as the greatest game of 2003.

If they don't remake 6 I'm going to blog about it

You all talk about advertising etc, thing is, as a kid I only ever heard of FFVII from a friend of mine who was playing at the time and was pretty into it. So when I went to a local vidya store I saw a used copy of it on the shelf for not many buck and decided to buy it. One of the best purchases of my life.
Perhaps in Japan/US the game was advertised, but here in Europe I don't remember seeing much about it. Zelda and Nintendo in general were much more established names in comparison.

why the hell would you want modern squenix to even try to remake any of the nes/snes FF games

Yikes

FF8 was infinitely better than 7

This.

A lot more people know about the game and even know the characters than the people who actually played the thing
Also it was intriguing that it was the 7th entry of something
Also it was like 3 discs
Also most realistic graphics done at the time

shhh boom boom, we don't want to rock the boat.

What sets a great game apart from a legendary game is the presentation. this is what makes your Deus Ex's, Final Fantasy 7's and Ocarina of times.

Like non autists care about Deus Ex

Breath of the Wild managed that too.

I didn't realize it was invite the Downs Syndrome people night on Yea Forums

Final Fantasy 6 is infinitely better than all final fantasy games put together + OOT and Majora's Mask + All nintendo 64 library combined + All switch library combined. That's the hard cold truth

>OoT
more like get OuT

This. Sony had more than sense in the 90s. They were an absolute powerhouse. If they wanted to convince you this game was good, they had all the best marketing strategists to do it.

and yet their Chrono Cross marketing failed by trying to push it as Chrono Trigger 2

Or maybe, just maybe, the game was actually pretty good. Whether it up there with the very best is a matter of personal taste, but you cannot deny it was a quality game.

and why is it so great?

Hype, marketing, the awe of exploring a FF title in 3D, and being completely ridiculous.

Why is THPS3 the only game that has managed to come close to THPS2's level of critical acclaim?

I did not olay it or see ads on release and yet I liked it a lot

FFVII is a top 5 game of all time for me. But it's not close to Ocarina in terms of critical reception. In fact, Ocarina was beaten more than a decade ago

Tbh a lot of modern games still do not measure up because they focus on graphics too much

6 is not better. That’s just a hipster choice.

Nah

Imagine being this much of a burden to your loved ones

no but you are a faggot

This is a good point about marketing. It can have an affect early on but it fades if there is nothing behind it. It does not manufacture long term loyalty.

7 is still the only FF game which comes up organically, the ohers only being mentioned in dedicated Ff threads, or in response to the discussion about 7 (“nuh uh, 6 is better” for example). To say that’s just marketing is delusional

especially when a common story is for people to appreciate the game more after another playthrough, who either did not care for it or had a mistaken memory of the game and story

>this is what nostalgiafags actually believe

I played it for the first time a few years ago and I think it’s better than the other FF entries

If marketing was this effective then game companies would just cut cornere in dev and spend more on marketing.

And maybe they do, but it doesn’t help

I really don't know how BotW/Odyssey/GTA4+5 are that high. And it's the gimped PS3 versions of GTA4/5 to boot.

Let's not pretend FFVII is good though. It was hot shit for ??? reason. I downloaded it to see if it was as good as I remember but holy shit even at 3x its' speed it's god awful and slow. Whatever charm people thought it had was probably because they didn't own a PC or 64

This except the part about dark souls.
Dark souls is a meme.
FF7 is still a solid jrpg, and is worth playing through once. Even for an older game it is straight forward enough to just pick up and go.

it came on 3 discs so it felt like a huge game compared to getting 1 shitty n64 cartridge

Resident Evil 4

right, i forgot about RE4.
>dark souls is garbage
we aren't talking about how good the games are.
we are talking about their impact in comparison to other games' impact.
dark souls had an impact like no other. it generated feelings like no other, generated conversation like no other, etc. etc. if you're too young to understand its impact, fine, i don't really care. but when people come out saying "dark souls is a bad game" it's a flag for being a contrarian pleb. or you just have a garbage opinion. either way, you're not worth talking to if "dark souls is a garbage game" is something you actually mean and not something you write to feel different.
keep in mind FFVII and OOT came out around '97/'98, and RE4 was 2004.
RE4, despite its nigh perfection, signalled a downfall of the action genre as every game in one way or another attempted to copy aspects of it without understanding how those aspects were intricately designed parts of a very, very good game.
