Biological evolution. Bonus points if the author goes the extra mile and finds a somewhat plausible explanation for such evolution. Kinda like in Mass Effect with Biotic powers (it's not exactly biological evolution but it's explained in a psuedo-scientific way)

Actually Squaresoft only had the license to produce two games, so they did. Eventually the author of Parasite Eve changed publisher and they started charging much more for the game license, so Square Enix never bothered with it again.
