Yes, I hate it so much.
Original gameboy is worse
>just what I needed
-Mario after every power up
Nah, I grew up with it and I find it nostalgic. It has a distinct quality to it, like the music is being played from underwater and getting distorted. Original Ruby/Sapphire had some of the most soulful soundtracks in the pokemon series.
The GBA doesn't even have a soundchip. It has to do it all its CPU
Now add Pokemon RSE's soundfont to it and it's even more hellish.
say what you want about the soundchip but GBA was pretty comfy. It had its own unique sound.
Ruby and Sapphire are literally why I hate the gba sound. It's gross. Those stupid fucking horns. The GBA in reality has none of the charm implied "being played underwater and getting distorted."
Is that some Xenakis shit that I'm just too much of a brainlet to understand?
>make a 32-bit handheld
>give it a 12-bit soundchip
That's four bits less than the Mega Drive!
Yes. I like the music in the Battle Network games though, maybe because it's supposed to sound electronic.
and yet I feel the original GB had more iconic melodies (same can be said for Sega Genesis and it's acid-like digital instruments)

I hate the instruments/music sounds of GBA Pokemon so fucking much it was one of the reasons I dropped the saga
No, it was only bad when converting sounds from more sophisticated systems
the Genesis soundchip was god-tier
it was stupid gaijin who didn't know or care how to program FM and relied heavily on presets that caused people to think it sounded like shit
This. It sounded bad if the composer didn't know how to use it properly, but when the Genesis soundchip sounded good, it sounded FUCKING GOOD.
Only gen zs would defend the GBA's soundchip...
Can you give some examples of proper Genesis music?
it doesn't even have a proper dedicated soundchip
GBA's sound quality depends on how much CPU time the dev is willing to sacrifice
Yes without a doubt. Only really beaten by the Genesis.
This model GBA is still the most aesthetic handheld ever made.
The sound chip definitely isn't great, but there's also huge variance when it comes to what developers were able to get out of it. Just compare the soundtracks of these two Castlevania games that released like a year apart from each other from different teams:
Circle of the Moon was a launch title, other devs have no excuse
No but when it's worse than the SNES and you have a ton of ports, it doesn't help.
Hell had they literally made it a beefed up SNES to go the system would have actually been worth a shit
It may have had a shit soundchip and a shit screen
but god damn the shell/aesthetics of the original GBA is god tier, it, the dreamcast, and the PSone just ooze late super 90's/early 2000's charm
It's kinda nostalgic but it's fucking awful, especially the squealing at 0:31.
Nah, not really. Metroid Fusion sounds horrible compressed, Wario Land 4 sounds horrible compressed, and every SNES game that came to it got its soundtrack butchered in some way or another.
It's a shame about the screen, because it is a genuinely nice piece of hardware. For some reason I have a super strong sense memory of what clicking those shoulder buttons feels like.
Playing GBA games on the DS was always the best way to play, i have fond memories of playing Nightmare Before Christmas and Amazing Mirror on the way home on the bus.
alright lads post suffering in musical form

Much like the point made, the GBA was fine when you had someone competent using the soundfonts. Otherwise it was just low tier ass.
The GBA was great. Its CPU was over 4 times as powerful as the SNES's. Devs were just lazier. And of course the smaller screen fucked ports hard
It's fine. It's just the speaker sucks.
>Gen Zs
>nostalgic about gba
>Released in 2000

sometimes the devs are the only ones to blame
No speaker can save you from the abominations the GBA produced, any of the YouTube videos can show you. For more:

Mother 2 is better than most of the ports, but there's still better.

It wasn't the screen size, resolution was worse than the SNES.
Literally any Sonic game
Yeah, but BN music is good only because they had someone super talented making those songs, they would sound even better if they had something like SNES sound chip to use there. A good composition is a good composition even when it has GBA soundchip trying to cockblock it, but I can’t imagine one single soundtrack which would feel like it’s not somehow compromised by GBA’s shitty soundchip, even BN would sound better if it wasn’t quite as rough sounding as it is now even if they kept the simplistic style of the music.
It doesn’t have a soundchip
SMW on GBA was the version I played first so it sounds right to me. I know the port has its flaws but I enjoyed it quite a bit
Wow the first song blows GBA out the window.
