Are Metroidvanias back? What other great ones have I missed this decade?

Environmental Station Alpha
Axiom Verge
Haven't played Iconoclasts or Momodora, but I've heard people say good things about them
The Messenger isn't exactly a Metroidvania but it's quite good, except for the fourth wall breaking humor. It's also really easy for a good chunk of the beginning.

Now that I think about it, Guacamelee 1 and 2 are also pretty good. They're insufferably meme-tastic and the environments don't stand out terribly, but the gameplay is really satisfying. I went to "not even going to touch these" to buying the second game day one after trying the first game out.

Salt and sanctuary and valdis story

ori is movieshit with horrible forced emotion and muh visuals, hollow knight is empty but manages looking nice without being as indulgent and has a lot more soul

While I agree that Ori is a bit too saccharine and there are some elements that could have been improved had they not been so hellbent on making the game look pretty, I still think it's a solid game underneath. I was going to skip it, but after being convinced to try it out I ended up enjoying it, albeit with some grievances.

Ori 2 is going to be GOTY, maybe even GOAT

Enrironmental Station Alpha is seriously top tier. Much better than Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge.

holy shit I just realised the guy that made ESA also made Baba is You and is working on ESA 2

Hollow Knight has a rare quality and mass appeal that isn't going to be matched for a long time. It's the best debut indie game in recent memory. It's been a treat watching it go from barely successful Kickstarter to selling 60k in the first month, to selling millions. Engaging with other players, here on Yea Forums and elsewhere, in that first month when it wasn't that well known was something special.

Good observation. I too enjoyed how it rose to become such a prominent game, and it's really a good game, so I'm happy it got that recognition.

As for your list, I'd say it's spot on, except for one thing: There's no terraria on it.

And also a game called Noita. It looks pretty neat, every single pixel on screen is simulated.

Shut the fuck up

>hollow knight: silksong blocks your path

Well it definitely won't be GOTY it's not out until next year :^)

so it's a sort of roguelite with 'falling sand' physics?

I have to agree, shit was way too forced and cringe this is why i haven't been able to play it such garbage hacks made it.

More or less, I guess? I'm not sure I'm going to play it, but some of the things they showed looked pretty neat.

i just want to play in my switch hollow knight: silksong, ori and the will of the wisp and void bastards. I don't want to continue playing shitty games like BOTW and kirby star allies

(You)

Ori will be announced for the Switch a week from now

That just means that is going to be the 2020 GOTY

S&S is such a good fucking game.

I think that's a fair assumption

I tried Iconoclasts because an user recommended it and it was terrible.

I know it's just a platformer but I really enjoyed Kero Blaster, can someone recommend something similar to that?

Not only is terraria not a Metroidvania, but it's also pretty shitty.
