They remade 1-3 using the engine from Victory and ported that to PC. There were some major changes in Rebirth 1 where characters from Victory warped in to change things but the other two were nearly the same. VII or VIIR (PSVR enhanced version) is the continuation of the main story.

I think vanilla VII is better. While I did have fun with VIIR, is right in that VIIR is straight up busted. The gear system just makes you OP as fuck.
It did, for better (True ending being the only ending since the requirements in vanilla were pretty easy to miss) or worse (the DLC characters and their scenes are gone completely unlike the previous remake which had the DLC characters and their scenes completely free).

Milli/GE/Nitro are understandable since they were brand deals (though that doesn't explain how RB3 still had those characters 3 years after the release of the original V), but no Umio or Nepgya?

My point is that a remake should be better than the original in nearly every way. That's not really the case with VIIR. VIIR is better than vanilla from a story telling perspective since the True End is the default ending and you play through both routes anytime there was a route split. It also has a few fully animated cutscenes.
VII is better from a gameplay perspective despite many QoL improvements in R simply because VIIR is easy to break.. Not even FFVIII is this easy to break.
