SMT THREAD

Why do some people consider this to be the best SMT game ever made?

Its so fucking barebones. There are no shops, barely any characters, a handful of interactable npcs, underwhelming plot, BARELY ANY SOUNDTRACKS AT ALL, etc

Sure its a wild change from the standard smt formula, but was it for the best? Not in my opinion.

To me it is the worst mainline (yes, SJ is mainline) SMT game to date.

>the best SMT game ever made
>not Nocturne

SMTIV blows it out of the water in every way

>he says, crying in pain

The community doesn't think that Strange Journey is the best smt, that role is for Nocturne. But the reason a lot of people like it and prefer sj to any other smt is the change of scenary, the orchestral soundtrack, and the return of the simple first person dungeon crawling

>has a huge panting orgasm in front of everyone

Attached: 57496518_p8.jpg (700x1000, 211K)

Nocturne < SJR < SMTIV/IVA

3ds babbies out

I wish Nintendo Switch can import all SMT and Persona games so I can play them all but that's really far-fetched

some more thoughts:

I always thought a mature MC would be better, but i dont think that anymore after playing this game for a while. A mature MC is already grown, there is no more room for improvement and development. A teenage/young adult MC is more suited to the game since they can give you a better sense of progression on your journey.

I do like the soundtrack style, but there are too few tracks, it should have AT LEAST 20 more tracks to make it varied enough. The sectors look good but they lack things to do, they feel like empty corridors. The lack of a tradition map is also a huge letdown for me.

SJ=IVA>IV>Nocturne

I'll get around to playing 1 and 2 some day.

traditional*

> A teenage/young adult MC is more suited to the game since they can give you a better sense of progression on your journey.
Don't agree with this, and neither does anyone else who's source of entertainment consumption isn't solely just high school anime and nothing else. Every single other storytelling medium isn't this attached to teenagers with low key mental problems except for anime for some reason and gets by just fine.

>IV::A > IV

Attached: holyfield.gif (368x270, 1.53M)

You should, aside from the budget graphics and some reused models for demons they're great games.

IVA fixes pretty much every problem the original 4 had and has the best combat in the series.

SJ was good for being barebones. It's 100% focused on gameplay

This, I love the pure camp sci-fi of SJ. The level design is also stellar and the game is very well balanced.

what development is there for a 30yo elite military dude? he's already accomplished everything he has to

i SERIOUSLY hope you're not talking about the map being maze-like and lacking icons to guide you through it

but yes, the combat is indeed better

IV:A's combat is all it has going for it. Most ofvthe dungeons are recycled from IV, progression is annoying as party members break up gameplay too often with cutscene of them saying dumb shit, and the cast and plot are trash.

>he still shits on persona after IV:A
Sorry pal, it's all the same shit after that game.

>what development is there for a 30yo elite military dude?
something other than the usual teenager "no one understands me T_T -> I'm grown up and can openly talk with others! :D" characterisation you've seen a million times I guess? Like I said, most forms of media have adult protagonists that manage to be plenty interesting, anime logic is the outlier here.

My only problem with IV:A is that they changed Nozomi's voice actor. Unions should be outlawed.

Strange Journey is the only game with a non embarrassing middle school plot and the main characters are adults

>dubfags

Cope

Utterly false, almost all the dungeons in IVA are new. The ones that are recycled, I.e. Lucifer's bachelor pad are completely redone. The new layout is actually a great dungeon with puzzles and mid bosses.

You haven't played SMTII or Nocturne I imagine. Only IV:A's plot is genuinely shitty, IV is just "Untapped Potential: The Video Game".

Ebin post.

Retard

The mere fact that it doesn't take place in Tokyo gives is major props from alot of people who like the games, but wanted a different local. Music is bitchin as well

Nocturne is not the culmination if the series. SJ is closer to 1 and 2 than Nocturne is. You fucking Nocturnebabbies really need to fuck off.

He's a 4babby though

Persona is the best series SMT has ever had

In what regard?

Specifically 4 Dancing, yeah.

Gameplay
Characters
Scenery
Balance
Story
Graphics
You name it. There's a reason why the most memorable things are always from Persona. People only hate it because it's the top dog.
And now the mainline SMT series is copying the persona style

>gameplay
As someone who got into SMT through Persona first and later went on to play more SMT titles, I vastly prefer SMT’s combat.

This except who gives a fuck about the persona games as you can already play all the good ones on psvita
would kill for a smt collection for switch tho

I always get a kick out of how people say P3 and 4 look so bad after they played 5 when this image exists.

>This except who gives a fuck about the persona games
That guy does, that's why he mentioned it

It doesn't have to be about the age, but the progression a character has from their start point to the end. I don't care much about Hero being a teenager, but he goes from day-to-day life to being in the middle of Tokyo going to shit, to living and thriving in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

If a salaryman went through the same thing, it'd be pretty crazy too. Doomguy is kinda screwed over by being a world renowned special ops guy put in cutting edge power armor before the game even starts.

Attached: smt1hero.gif (365x250, 1.93M)

>Gameplay
Combat is just a simplified version of press turn, and your party is less customisable. Dungeons are much worse too: SMTfags shit on IV's dungeons while Personafags are amazed by 5's,despite them being of the same quality
>Characters
They're better than mainline which rarely focuses on characters anyway, but Devil Survivor and Summoner consistently have far superior casts. DDS too.
>Scenery
>Graphics
You would expect as much since it gets the highest budget but despite that P3 and 4 are awful looking games with drab and dull environments. P5 looks good at times but most of the game is still in a bland depiction of Tokyo. Nocturne and Raidou do it better, and SMTIV is still really good for a 3DS game.
>Balance
hilarious. P3 lets you stunlock most bosses just by hitting weakness and waiting, and you will never take damage while doing this. P4 and 5 have extremely overpowered phys skills available early game that stay consistently good for the rest of it. That said most SMT games are also unbalanced, but DDS, DeSu2 and SMTIV:A are much better in this regard than any Persona.
>story
It's generic shonen in high school. What's so great about it?
>And now the mainline SMT series is copying the persona style
Persona did not invent generic shonen

What is this and where can I get one?

Attached: 1559482707818m.jpg (1024x833, 122K)

I don't get this. Strange Journey's soundtrack is the worst in a mainline series game, easily.

youtube.com/watch?v=XEtRzDYYBuY

>Doomguy is kinda screwed over by being a world renowned special ops guy
He wasn't famous or anything, he was just a notably good soldier with experience in combat. Not sure what it says in the Japanese version where he's Japanese himself but in the US version Gore just says he was notable among the US marines or something.

That's not true, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei is a great read. One of these days I'll get around to actually reading it.

That's only because SMTV hasn't come out yet. It's going to have Switch-level graphics so it should look better than anything Persona releases in the next 5 years or so.

epic

>Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei is a great read
>One of these days I'll get around to actually reading it
Are you fucking serious? Why call it a great reasmd when you haven't read it?

I have read it, it is terrible. It's importance for creating the series can't be understated but the novels are absolutely terrible dime store tier science fiction.

Attached: 1530440097531.png (2820x940, 3.4M)

go back to shopping at hot topic

The entire reason he's there is he was requested by name to be part of the combat team, in a secret operation put together by the world's highest levels of government. You don't get much more famous than that.

You couldn't tell it was a shitpost?

Just DS retards.
This is not even better than SMT2.

Seemed too genuinely retarded enough, with a guy claiming to like a book he never read. Yea Forums is retarded enough to say something like that.

It definitely is better then SMTII, I'm playing SMTII as I write this. SMTII feels way too slow and relies on backtracking to pad out sections of the game. There's far too many "where the fuck do I go" moments as well where the game gives you zero indication of what to even do exactly.

It is fun though, just tedious at times. I hear a lot of people saybthey enjoyed SMTI one more but I think I enjoyed SMTII more personally.

DS or 3DS version

I've only played P4 and 3 but I am in the mood for another jrpg. What game should I start with and why is that game good to you?

>DeSu2
This is just as broken as the rest of the series. Magic MC will sweep through the game easily. Only the final boss is a problem if you're not ready for it

Devs knew what they were doing, Megami Tensei 1 doesn't really have anything to do with the books other than basic premise

I lost it when the choice "don't make me repeat myself" appeared

>Devil Summoner 1 will never get translated
Not epic

Soul Hackers
Atmosphere and setting, combat is fast and satisfying, characters are great, best demon designs in the franchise, dungeons are fun

Attached: stupid.jpg (1362x1499, 547K)

Try Devil Survivor. It feels halfway between SMT and Persona in the sense that you have social time with different characters and the alignments. The social events actuallr change the story and characters can die depending on what you do. Its an SRPG and is pretty challenging, so it might take some time to get used to but its well worth it

You can follow this, or imo just play nocturne

Attached: PRKpcPh.png (1600x5717, 3.84M)

Play Megami Tensei 1 (Kyuuyaku version) next
No overworld, just pure unadulterated dungeon crawling
It was absolute pleasure to play, went straight ahead of SMT1&2 for me

Why is there so much incompetence with translating these games? It's like people say they're translating these projects solely for the Reddit gold.
There is no earthly reason why any SMT translation should take more than two years at the latest.

I'll never understand how nocturne can be so worshipped here. It's the only smt I couldn't finish due to being so boring. The MC is too much of a blank slate for me, so much so that I couldn't give a shit about the story. So for me, nocturne was the worst mainline I ever played.

I disagree with that poster on the soundtrack being part of the draw seeing as it generally seems to be one of the MegaTen games with the least talk about its music, but the orchestral soundtrack SJ has suits it perfectly. It's very oppressive and militaristic and contributes a lot to the tone of the game, and just because orchestral music is used in Marvel movies doesn't mean it isn't well done in, and well suited to, SJ.

I'd say they have much bigger issues than the graphics and re-used assets considering the padding in SMT 2 and the braindead combat alongside an absurd encounter rate. They're still good and worth playing, but if I were to advise against playing them, graphics wouldn't be why, and re-skinning some Demons definitely wouldn't be why.

Didn't Gideon Zhi sit on If's translation for who knows how long and not release it just because of autistic spite or some shit? I'm pretty sure I've heard talk of how some groups sabotage other people's projects too because they had "claimed" that game before despite not actually actively working on translating it

>Most ofvthe dungeons are recycled from IV
literally what the fuck

Retard

I don't agree on the MC, but I disagree with the people who always harp on about a MegaTen needing an adult protagonist as well. Their age doesn't matter, what compelling qualities any of the characters in SJ have aren't because they're over 18, they're just memorable characters and they are the age they are because of the setting and the fact that the UN wouldn't send an inexperienced 15 year old into something like the Schwarzwelt, but a character like Zelenin or Jimenez could easily be put into a different setting and be written as a teenager and they would work just as well as they do in SJ. I really don't see any reason to get so caught up on the protagonist's age.

At the same time though, just being an adult doesn't mean you can't mature in a sense, and the MC of SJ being in his twenties doesn't mean he would just enter into the Schwarzwelt completely prepared for what he might see and how he would handle it. It doesn't matter what age you are when you're making decisions of such magnitude that they'll hugely effect the whole planet and everybody on it.

He didn't say anything about Persona though.

A Sci fi gane like this needs industrial music. Orchestral music is really melodramatic and out of place

They're not recycled, but they are shitty and forgettable outside of the Cosmic Egg and YHVH's Universe.

>game kicks off with a large portion of humanity getting snapped into the rapture
>the remaining populace have to deal with the demon invasion
>the survivors have to deal with the loss of most of humanity
>the demon invasion is on a global scale
>games tone is more in line with the first game
actually sounds pretty good, but really, I just want a DeSu 3, easily my favourite megaten spinoff series, deserves more love

Attached: 616741.jpg (1280x1783, 492K)

That's your opinion dude.

Pretty much. These translators have a very large stick planted firmly in their butt. This very same thing happens in the emulator scene as well.

*psst* hey kid? wanna establish communism with me?

Attached: Ronaldo.png (935x1900, 602K)

because people cant understand that SMT is not Persona

It's not out of place, it suits the militaristic aesthetic and the feeling of being in a world where you're weak and are constantly at threat from the entire world, from both the atmosphere itself being something you wouldn't be able to withstand on your own, and beings far more powerful than you attacking you constantly.

I don't. I'd rather a new Devil Summoner or something new entirely.

"Smacks you off a bridge"

Attached: Yamato.png (1347x1880, 1.06M)

What's wrong with Devil Survivor 2's writing? I see a lot of people rag on it but it seems fine. All endings other then daichi and anguished ones seem a bit abrupt though.

I actually like how P3 and 4 look, they don't look as good as other PS2 MegaTen games or P5, but it kind of feels like you're looking in on a little diorama in P3, and even moreso in 4, which I like even though I don't think it was the intention.

I was gonna, then you tried to kill Mokoto, asshole

I really love it as a solid and extensive dungeon crawler, but holy hell, even my patience has its limits and Sector Eridanius tested those limits, I made and I'm glad I did, but holy shit, that place took forever
also Mem Aleph is a fucking whore and the nastiest difficulty spike in the game

Attached: 1557179134780.png (480x640, 147K)

>Mokoto
dang dude, you don't even know her name

The writing is fine, but its tone lacks urgency, which the first game had

Oops

I expected Mem Aleph to be a lot harder hearing people talk about her, when I first played the game I went Chaos so I heard people talk about how tough she is for years without seeing it for myself, I only fought her in SJR, but she didn't seem so bad to me there. I'd even say Pillar Zelenin gave more more trouble.

It's funny despite Ronaldo being a unhinged retard, his ending compared to Yamato was actually pretty okay. Yamato was just laughably evil it was fucking hilarious going through his path the whole time. I honestly don't know who I like better. Yamato or Naoya.

It was a different type of tone. I liked that. I feel like people rag on DS2 too much because it's a bit lighter.

The characters don't take their situation seriously
Too many asspulls

The only way to truly be free is to take out every single star that exists. It'll be ok, we can do this
W-W-Wait what? They're now attacking at the very beginning of the cycle?

>The characters don't take their situation seriously
Bullshit

I'm talking about Sept. I haven't finished Tri yet. Everyone seems all happy in communism at the end while in Yamato it was just fucking hilarious.

What asspulls?

Strange Journey is the only SMT game I've ever played and it was such a pain to get through, dungeon crawling with countless traps just isn't for me I guess.
Still for some reason remember it fondly though and am glad I sticked with it, but you'd have to pay me a fortune to touch it ever again.

>can shoot Makoto in the fucking face out of spite for Yamato
>he body isn't even cold before he storms into JPs HQ and declares he is going to establish full communist revolution

Makoto hates Yamato's path

Attached: 84-Gif_1.gif (512x384, 292K)

People who hate on the soundtrack are what I could never understand.
Atlus is king as matching the OST with the characters and setting. When you play a game with a group of teenagers, you get pop music BGMs and battle music. Play a game like SMT with cyberpunk characters, and its very retro synthwave stuff. Play as a half demon, and his theme song is screaming and guitars.

Strange Journey was about a normal group of marines getting fucked up by things they can't even comprehend. The military drum beats and the chaotic chanting fully captures the mood of the game.

Saying it should've had a more standard JRPG soundtrack is just stupid as fuck.

Ronaldo has the best Tri arc ending

This, most games nowadays tends to focus too much on their fanfic tier story arcs and keep interrupting the flow of the game

A bunch of marines who have only seen human conflict being slaughtered by invisible eldritch forces and mindfucked. There was plenty of development in SJ, even people completely reevaluating their humanity.

I feel like you didn't bother to pay attention because there were no teenage girls to look at.

The most common complaint is that the game deemphasizes the survival aspect from the first game. Which is true but the scale of 1 is restricted to a single city for most of the game and the story is more personal because of that. But 2's conflict is literally on a cosmic scale from the start, so the fact the issue of food being scarce and finding a place to sleep is resolved by the end of the first day is forgivable when the characters' entire universe is slowly being erased.

I don't know what's not to like about SJ. For me it was just this classic-style dungeon crawler with addictive mapping and fusing, as well as fun boss battles (there were some roadblocks, but nothing too frustrating).
People can laud the Press Turn system all they want but I have nothing against the more standard battle system of SJ. The battles in general are more difficult than other SMT games to begin with, so I can imagine Press Turn making things even less in your favour if you were to go against bosses like Ouroboros.

5's dungeons are defintely several order of magnitude better than vanilla IV's dungeons. They're not the best in the series and a bit simple but they're all proper dungeons with midbosses and traps, and they all look fantastic.

>SMT is copying the Persona style
>Meanwhile Persona just brought back Guns, Demons, Negotiation, among other SMT elements
So..

Rank OSTs:

Devil Survivor 1 > Devil Survivor 2
IV > Nocturne = DDS > SJ = Raidou
P3 = P4 > P5

They're all great though

Best gameplay. combat is great, dungeons are 10/10. Story is arguably the best in the series.

Attached: 67150865_p0.jpg (920x902, 203K)

All of that was in early Persona games. The way P5 uses guns isn't even similar to SMT, it's like P1's style. Try again mate

Honestly, the only thing the P5 dungeons have going for them, is their aesthetic. The overall puzzles are mind numbing since your party constantly points out the puzzle to you. It's even worse, because in most instances you can hug any form of wall, and get off an ambush because of how busted the Stealth mechanic is. Persona isn't even really suited for dungeons, but I hope it improves.

I liked SJ because instead of being the chosen one or someone with demon powers, you were just a normal grunt being sent to die and watching everyone around you slowly go insane.

Even still, Persona got all of that from SMT. Assuming you are the same person, you didn't even explain how SMT is becoming Persona. If you're taking Apocalypse as the sole example of this, it's still flawed because of the choices present in the game. One could just as easily take the Anarchy route, and that wouldn't even matter.

There's also the fact that they go on for an eternity and a half

>proper dungeons
You're kidding right?

This doesn't even account for the fact that once you're finished exploring said dungeons, you're left with Mementos. Which is truthfully just another tedious, randomly generated dungeon. It's quite awful.

I just want to say, good evening, neutral friends, chaos bros.

>dude, what if we fight every single fucking star in the sky forever?

Where are my /Yosuga/ boys at? This thread is filled with too many useless things.

Attached: Bodied.gif (500x347, 1.93M)

if I'm going to have hundreds of battles the normal battle theme should at least be interesting

Based

Attached: 025c30d0f357cb466375505ab4c0c79d037d321c.png (600x510, 118K)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I prefer Mementos
At least Mementos offers me some kind of facsimile of a dungeon crawling experience, with you know forks in the road where you have to blindly pick a direction and explore
The actual dungeons are literally one long linear corridor with pretty props lying around

Even if you like the SJ soundtrack it's still retarded how the later sectors reuse so much of the music and that there's only one normal battle theme despite the game having a clear dividing point

The point is that it sounds like ass, aside from a couple of tracks. It's really neat, but that doesn't make it sound better.

Personally, I dislike the battle theme for SJ/R, but I will agree that it fits the atmosphere of the game. The foreboding orchestra music, really fits the fact that you're a soldier, going through an unknown Sci-Fi setting. There are some good themes in the game, though. Like Eridanus, and Horologium.

I’d be more okay with Mementos if the music wasn’t so grating.
youtu.be/DbT5T35aUUE

I like this one. I occasionally play this while grinding in Path of Exile

I like it

In a lot of instances, the Palaces are filled with empty corridors, but the same also applies for Mementos. Instead of looking pretty though, it's just a bleak railway. I find both bad for different reasons, but I'd take the Palaces honestly. It's kind of underwhelming how Persona just managed to create an actual semblance of dungeon crawling, but said dungeons were still just about as mediocre as always. I hope they kick it up a notch with P6.

Besides, Nocturne has like 3 different battle theme variations. You're point is kind of void.

dumbass

It was shitty screamo metal

youtube.com/watch?v=-VH5__iGpmQ

Nocturne's normal battle theme has 7 variations.

so quantity over quality then

Sad.

I never said that? Just corrected him.
Even though the variation is only seen in the guitar solo, any one of those is miles above SJ's

Nah, it's all quality

I hope SMTV will kickstart a lot of spinoffs just like PS2 SMTs, that was definitely the best era for the series. we've got Nocturne, Raidou, DDS and arguably the best Persona games

>youtube.com/watch?v=zYzc6fYc7Y8
Honestly, as someone who never even really listens to Rock music, I find myself blasting Nocturne's battle themes all the time.
That's like, your opinion. Luckily most people rightfully disagree.
No? All the themes are great once they kick in.

SJ wouldn't work with guitars. The military-esque was fine you goobers.
All of Atlus' games have music that suit the setting

youtu.be/jPibv8bJeas

The military-esque music I mean

It won't. Normies won't jump on it because it won't be a visual novel.

fuck, this would make a great alarm ringtone

>I hope SMTV will kickstart a lot of spinoffs just like PS2 SMTs
You know they have no real reason to do this, since Persona is their primary spinoff cash cow. They've struck gold, and the only way I can see them screwing around with new spinoffs, is if..
>They get bored of working on mainline and need something else to experiment with
>Genuinely want to make a new spinoff, or revive an old one
It's up in the air, but I hope you're right. I'm hesitant, though. Since they did say they were looking for an opportunity to remake/port Nocturne. If they do that immediately after SMTV, I'm not sure we'll be getting spinoffs for awhile.

>and the only way I can see them screwing around with new spinoffs, is if..
I don't know if If... is going to be of any use at this point

based lisa poster

Doomposting aside, they literally can't fuck this up.
>SMT IV sold 600k sales by itself, and was the highest selling mainline entry to date thus far
>The Switch userbase in Japan is incredibly high, and popular to boot, aka the intended audience
>JRPG's have sold very well on said console, and many niche games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Octopath have managed to surpass a million in sales
>All the people coping over P5 not being on Switch will likely end up playing SMTV
Basically, this is the perfect storm. If SMTV doesn't break a million and put the series in the limelight, I'll actually be quite shocked. The series can only go upwards, honestly.

The new music in SJR has the same style as vanilla while sounding much better

if... remake when?

Attached: a57218c13762bd91ac986410ed336513.jpg (707x1000, 260K)

I didn't mind it so much because you're not actually in Mementos that often, I found it a lot less grating than Tartarus' music, which although it changed, was still mostly the same throughout the whole game and you spent an enormous amount of time listening to it, so I found it much worse. Being able to change the music helped, but I didn't like that I had to change the music to something else that wasn't even made with Tartarus in mind just to avoid a headache.

>Nocturne remake
oh god no. I mean I love the game but it's gotta be the blandest setting I've ever laid my eyes on. But sure, I'll take a remake if it means there some new QoL changes

also switch users will buy anything because of the drought

I generally prefer the FeMC OST, but Wiping All Out sucks.

so what's the deal with Tamaki actually? if she's in P2 along with Kyoji Kuzunoha does that mean they're part of the same universe? If... is supposed to be an alternate universe separate from mainline right? but Debisama doesn't seem to be part of Persona

Persona didn't bring in newcomers because of the VN aspect, though it didn't hurt, they jumped on it because it had an established following that brought it a lot of attention when it came out, and when a lot of people talk about something at once it brings in a lot of newcomers, even moreso when it's Japanese so it can bring in the weeb crowd who don't play or watch any anime that's new and popular. SMT has that going for it too, and you can see the surface level appeal that people can bring up about it that'll bring newcomers in already in SMT threads, people just reposting quirky dialogue from the Demons are posting about the shock humor of killing your friends, or memeing on the Chaos and Law heroes are all things that people will talk about in large numbers when SMTV comes out, people will see it, be attracted to it and play the game. You'll have people getting it just because it's a Switch exclusive too I imagine. It'll do well.

Jesus I'm gonna have to buy a switch just for SMT V too, is the game drought on Switch that bad that I'll have to sell the console back on after finishing up with V?

>but I disagree with the people who always harp on about a MegaTen needing an adult protagonist as well
>Their age doesn't matter
Of course their age matters, it will always matter as long as the protagonist remains mostly silent and it's the supporting characters who do most of the talking, that tend to come mostly from the same age group as the mc. And god knows, I had enough games with Japanese high school students to last me a lifetime. It's one of the main reasons I'm finding MegaTen games harder and harder to enjoy.

I thought Devil Survivor 2 would make a great anime after replaying record breaker. That opening's pretty sweet, I'd love an anime in that art style. So why didn't they make a Devil Survivor anime? Hahaha

Attached: ManLosesHopeThatHeDidntEvenKnowHeHad).jpg (480x360, 12K)

why haven't we get a Law/Chaos characters that are your close relatives like your brother/sister? I'm sure it'll pull some heartstrings. but I guess SMT isn't that cruel

Might as well Youtube it if you are gonna do that.

Isn't your mom a law rep in 2

not mainline but still a valid point.
god I just hate that kind of anime style for some reason, maybe the only thing that's holding me back from playing it

Did they really have to make him look so evil?

>tend to come mostly from the same age group as the mc.
The characters being the same age as the MC doesn't mean they have to have a certain personality, as I said in that post, a personality like Jimenez's or Zelenin's could easily be stuck onto a teenager bad it wouldn't feel unnatural at all. What qualities they have has nothing to with their age, and in something like Nocturne Chiaki doesn't behave like a teenager at all, despite her age. Just being in a certain age group doesn't mean characters have to act immature or mature, an adult can be immature and a teenager can be immature, even moreso when the setting is not that of our own society as is the case in most SMT games, in a post-apocalyptic world there is no highschool for there to be highschoolers, and if the characters act accordingly then whether they're 15 or 30, all they really are is just humans fighting for their lives and a personality that suits the 30 year old could easily suit the 15 year old just as well, despite their age.

We did. We had one of them being your cousin.
It's not that bad user.
She's the neutral rep

She's the heroine, she just sides with you whichever way you go.

Don't think about it too hard
All the games, unless directly a followup to a previous title, can be treated like their own standalone universe

I don't get this. you want less customization in an rpg?

Attached: 1541102352069.png (192x214, 81K)

Once I finish Devil Survivor 2, what game should I move to?

Soul Hackers
Majin Tensei 2
Digital Devil Saga
Raidou

I want something more focused on the characters and plot while the gameplay is more of a backdrop. I've already played through all of the mainline and the Persona series.
I do however really want to play Majin Tensei 2 but I don't know if the gameplay or story is good. Not many people talk about it.

I prefer randomized stats so you don't break the game really early on by dumping all your points in one stat. I really like games that just ask how generally how you'd like to build your character.

Raidou

DDS has the most focus on characters and story of the games you mentioned, but Raidou 1 has better characters and story. Worse gameplay though.

Attached: 1510902475739.jpg (542x799, 332K)

What is he? Fucker can stand up too so it was all a lie when he said he got attacked by a demon and become crippled as a result back on SMT1?

Attached: Stephen Gigachad.png (518x742, 265K)

>what game should I move to
These should do you:
Megami Tensei Gaiden: Revelations Persona
Persona Tsuu: Tsumi
Persona 2: Eternal Sin
Persona 3: Rise of the Sinestrals
Shin Megami Tensei 4: Persona
Persona 5: The Battle Royale

autistics like the 2deep4u aesthetics

What?

Play Persona, user.

>reading comprehension

user...I-...

>Finally got to the Grus alignment change in DSJR

This game is fucking exhausting, but I really do love it.

What's next? I need my SMT dose, but there's nothing.

>I really like games that just ask how generally how you'd like to build your character
I can understand that. I would argue that is the more casual approach since it is more streamlined, though it does mean you can get fucked with growthrates

BABY BABY BABY BABY MASS RAPE

Attached: ohyeah).jpg (1280x720, 59K)

bump

>Atlus is king as matching the OST with the characters and setting. When you play a game with a group of teenagers, you get pop music BGMs and battle music.
Funny you say that considering how they retroactively messed up Persona 1's soundtrack in the remake by giving it the same cheesy j-pop music P4 had

Rapefag, pls.

Well, if you liked SJ for its gameplay you always have EO games.

I listened to the soundtrack and this is literally the only track that wasn't mediocre at best
youtu.be/-DHUKrjkAC4
Ironically enough Persona 5 kinda copied this theme

>Fear of God
>Alex encounter/battle themes
>Antlia/Bootes/Carina themes
>Sad Event
>mediocre
Bro you just posted cringe

regret in P5 also sounds oddly familiar to
youtu.be/-nPxgThEDfs

Meguro's orchestral compositions are incredibly mediocre and repetitive, so it's no surprise.

Honestly inexcusable track since even when I get what they were going for with it, not making it progress with each stratum is just downright lazy when P3 already did it

Why haven't you played Megami Tensei 1 and 2 yet?

Attached: 305bdc0d4cbee4383c46231a0793e991eb53e4e0.jpg (1881x2660, 2.53M)

I only haven't played Nexus. But I don't really feel like getting it yet.

SMT1 combat was pretty boring, I figure MT1&2 are even worse

I still can't tell if PQ2 is a solid spin-off or a lazy cashgrab, guessing something inbetween?

You described every SMT game ever, at least mainline SMT.

I wish Kaneko got to direct another SMT or adjacent title
I miss his human designs not to mention demons

Based.

What did he mean by this?

He's only played Persona

Attached: 324C5F4D-2099-47AB-8D7A-A06B94CB6A5A.jpg (1500x1500, 610K)

It has heart, but no soul

He means he's a SMT ''fan'' who's only watched a few Nocturne videos and never played any of the games

>There will never be another SMT game with the dread, nihilism, and harrowing atmosphere of Devil Survivor 1

fuck off
devil survivor fags are the worst

They are just wizardry clones and you can cheese then as easily like SMT1

Maybe so, but only a few tracks stand out and the remaining are generic as fuck. DSJ should have been remixed or remade by the music directors from IV.

Attached: 1558357083590.png (700x763, 240K)

But SMTIV exists

Why do people get away with saying demon negotiations in P5 is a return to its SMT roots when negotiations aren't even the same like in mainline? It's just a simple two-three questions and then they join you. They don't ask for macca, to drain your stamina, the lives of your party or even decide split unless they're higher level. It's way closer to P2 if anything.

SJR new tracks are really good

Because it is a dumn downed system from 2 and these retards are posers who don't know what they are talking about

So then why should I play them if they're boring?

They all contribute to the atmosphere of the game, a lot of music in IV doesn't stand out either, it's still a great OST. SJ needed more music because it re-uses a lot of it, but what music is there is very good and suits the game very well. It didn't need Kozuka to remix any of it, although he did do a very good remix of the Chaos theme from SJ for the 25th anniversary, but it would have been out of place if it were in the actual game.

They aren't, they are fun.

I always felt like Gore is such an asspull. Literally why the fuck was he resurrected and made into an actual god, it makes no sense, they should have just left him dead instead of letting me remove him forcefully

Attached: silencingminorities.jpg (503x532, 103K)

so tell me something good about them, so far you've just said they're easily cheeseable wizardry clones

It works like SMT but dumbed down. In P2 you couldn't recruit directly, and had to choose different interaction types rather than answering a question from the demon. It also let some of your team members work together to use different approaches to the demon. It's nothing like P2 negotiations at all, it's SMT negotiations but easier.

He got better

I meant you can't cheese them as easily as I. Anyway MTI is pure dungeon crawling goodness and II has a great story that laid tge foundation for the series.

>Ironically enough Persona 5 kinda copied this theme
With what? I don't remember anything like that in P5.

These are questions most SMT fans cannot answer, user.

youtube.com/watch?v=xT_tQQJufh8

Tartarus was also the only dungeon in P3 though, it would have been a far greater offense to have one, unchanging song to play through all of that than with Mementos, that you don't spend nearly as much time in by comparison.

He's been some special being since II.

SMT Switch ports when?

?

Personafags are even worse no matter how many times you spout this meme.

Because it's a thing that's in SMT that's not in P3 and 4, even if it's dumbed down.

But you quoted a good thing in your post
Or do you think Wizardry clone = bad somehow?

That's what makes him so great. His entire design screams the ending: KING OF THE BEL, OVERLORD OF HUMANITY but then it turns out that that is one of the best endings. Not even that, he helps you in other endings too despite not agreeing with your choice.

Devil Survivor had some pretty good routes in general. King of Bel still remains one of my favorite concepts in SMT.

Attached: A0FE154F-2C66-44AA-ADE8-1C489EEED512.jpg (769x832, 107K)

Didn't know he was in II.

I think SJ is my favorite, but I like a lot of aspects of IV. Nemissa is hands down best girl though. Finishing up I right now, then going to tackle II

Attached: 1557155113079m.jpg (801x1024, 85K)

If you consider SJ to be mainline then you should know that no mainline game is worse than NINE.
>Its so fucking barebones. There are no shops, barely any characters, a handful of interactable npcs, underwhelming plot, BARELY ANY SOUNDTRACKS AT ALL, etc
There shouldn't be any shops except for the one on the ship for obvious reasons, it's a mission where you're exploring a foreign land where only your ship seems to have survived the crashlanding. To expect shops in a land of supernatural creatures hellbent on killing you and the rest of humanity seems absurd. The same goes for interactable NPC's. The OST in my opinion fits the game, there's a few tracks that stand out but I agree that it isn't the most noteworthy OST in mainline.

Attached: 1532053165428.jpg (712x870, 80K)

Based and Nemissapilled.

You don't even have to negotiate most of the time. Especially when you get Shinya's Social Link up to a relatively high level. All you have to do is blast your gun and demons will join you. It's so trivialized that I might as well fuse demons in the Velvet Room instead of recruiting shit all day.

I see you are a man of taste as well.

Attached: 28cc24eb69302ecdd6ac36c6bb2b82838d0894d9.jpg (480x854, 98K)

Even adding layers or variations would've sufficed, even once
they have no excuse

>King of Bel still remains one of my favorite concepts in SMT.
Based Abelposter. I actually like how they connected the King of Bel shit to YHVH's ascension. I think it went something like
>King of Bel used to be one being, composed of said demons
>Got into a battle with YHVH, lost, and ended up getting shattered into multiple demons (The Bel's you fight in the game)
>YHVH then rose to power, become one with the Axiom, and established Heaven
It was pretty nice. I wonder how they would have handled said plot in a mainline title? Oh well.

Based, and Tachibanapilled.
Every time I review this trailer, I get excited for the expanded 3D exploration around this apocalyptic Tokyo. IV was apocalyptic, but Tokyo didn't look overly devastated. Like per say, Infernal/Blasted Tokyo did, all the time.

You know SJ isn't mainline right?

But the gameplay is fun and the narratives are great.

Yeah it's fun if you don't have a 3ds, Citra works fine.

Why are you giving the schizo serious responses, user? Think, soldier.
Yes. It's a pretty great game, even with it's flaws. My only issues with it, boil down to:
>Mikado doesn't get as much focus as it should, since you spend most of the game in Tokyo. Let alone, you can't even explore it like you can with Tokyo
>Smirk is busted, and doesn't get fixed until Apocalypse
>Enemies chase you autistically across the maps
>Map can be confusing to navigate

I suppose so if there's going to be someone spreading misinformation.

No reason, it's just a free bump.

His own post says he doesn't want to care about the gameplay

I'm playing through SMT 1 now, and I am at the part were I beat Ozawa and demon Chaos Hero leaves the party. Man, I really don't think that any other games in the series have a better atmosphere or sense of dread and meaningless. I also think the character designs are nice and simple, and probably the best in the series overall.

Didn't sell enough. Only persona sells.

Shijima was pretty interesting, honestly. Although, the Reason itself might as well be the embodiment of Law.

Gameplay is pretty fun on devil mode for the first game at least.

>embodiment of law
>Hikawa was a gaean
>summoned demons and massacred fellow gaeans and messians
>started the apocalypse
>most followers are chaotic
>Ahriman is the god of evil

It's a real dungeon crawler. SMT started as a dungeon crawler, that "plot" you miss with handholding and NPCs was added later. SMT is true to the original vision, not your persona shite.

If you are up for emulation SMTV will be functional in yuzu by the time it releases in 202X

It sols like shit, the main reason these games dont have follow-ups

my money's on 2021

It was a sequel to a niche tactics game. Very fun though.

How did Abel a human become a Bel or atleast eligible to become king of bel?

Same. Info in 2020, release early 2021.

because he's a bel
duh

Something something, there's hundreds of descendants of Abel, but the DeSu 1 MC just so happened to be one of them

Hahahaha I meant Devil Survivor 2. I felt like the tone would make a great anime like Persona 4. Why didn't they?

You know that Reasons don't apply to the same metrics as alignments, right

Who?

my dad

Playing it now on DS emulator, seems good and it's my first SMT game.

I got the pun, but was there an actual ingame explanation for why Abel the son of the first human was part of the first bel demon outside of the pun?

Play the enhanced port on 3DS emulator instead, if it works.

There's a more in depth explanation in Amane's route, aka the Law route. The angel possessing her, Remiel, gives you a summary of Abel and etc.

It's not a pun though

There's a 3DS emulator for phones now? I don't using DS emulators on PC.

How long are the later days in DeSu OC? I'm almost done with day 5 and I want out of this game already. It's good enough, but days 2 and 3 were so devoid of anything important that they burned me out.

They are longer, because that's where all the action is.

Attached: C7B9CDD8-C173-4161-92D1-CC54C3A9597E.jpg (714x1024, 88K)

Days 6, 7, and 8 are pretty long. They are the meat of the game, after all. Tokyo is pretty much a complete war zone by then.

About the same length except day 8 which is longer (day 8 is only on certain routes). Just drop it if you don't like it or come back to it someday when you want more of the same.

>Days 2/3 burned me out
That's mostly because nothing major happens earlier in the game. A lot of people agree, that the plot progression is rather weak early in game. DeSu 2, remedies this.

>Navarre threw away all my items

He has the best battle theme in the entire series.

>He has the best battle theme in the entire series.
He doesn't have any exclusive battle theme though, he only has one boss in the shape of Ahriman and that uses the same theme as the other Reason bosses.

What will SMT V's gimmick be?

bringing back heroine

What if they tried to expand on the dual party stuff from the YHVH fight so both the boy and the girl were protagonists?

If I recall correctly, he has a theme in the unreleased OST. You can find it on YouTube.
I really hope mainline titles don't start introducing gimmicks, every new title like Pokemon. I'm completely content with Smirk. At the most, I could see them bringing back the Heroine formula. Of course, that would mean the MC might not be able to use magic again, like Hero/Aleph. Demon Whisper would have to be revamped as well. Who knows, though.

>Dual party
They'd have to have twice the encounters, then. Unless you mean being able to swap between the MC, and the heroine in combat. Each having their own unique abilities. I doubt it, though. Now the heroine becoming a customizable demon like the DDS crew that you can use in your party, would be based.

It plays like the classic games

Inanna did nothing wrong

Nocturne was THE gimmick game. SJ also had demon Coop, and IV with smirk and partners

>inb4 she dies a few hours into the game.

Press Turn was a major revamp of the core gameplay. It's not a gimmick.

Inanna was right...I think...what did she want again?

If you seriously think SJ is worse than 4/4A you are a pleb. Also don’t post the 3DS version.

Redux is better than the crappy original.

>save anywhere

Just don't use them.

There's literally nothing wrong with being able to save anywhere

4A has aay better combat abd fusion though sources and co-op kinda suck.

Don’t use it then, man.
