Funny thing about the baddies in VC1 were that they never were going to win. Look at their forces, with few exceptions everything is an EW1 or interwar relic. Even Calamity Raven had more advance tanks and equipment. They have virtually no reinforcements, very little support from the capital, Max and Selvaria are still under threat of assassination while Jaeger wants to GTFO, and in the off chance they do win the Federation will simply sweep in from the south and take Gallia from there weakened forces.

If you played VC3, the church and other Imperial nobles sabotaged Maximilian. They wanted Gallia to eke out a pyrrhic victory, killing Max and his commanders and allowing another Imperial prince to come in and take all the glory. Despite his bad characteristics and all around unlikability, Maximilian was a reformer who threatened to "rock the boat" if he got any substantial political power. Compounded with the fact that he was an upstart "lower" prince who didn't know his place, with his mother and most of his retainers dead, the crown and church were not huge fans of Max at all.

Except that's invalidated by the fact that he was set up to fail before the invasion even kicked off. Doesn't matter how much he put people over personal goals, he was going to crash and burn. His only hope of victory would be by applying political pressure, not military. Even had he won politically though, the Federation would have decimated him.
Also, good commander's would prioritize the mission over people if he had too. Though Max's issue was that most of his goals were ultimately self-centered.

I'd want the Red Revolution, Valkyrian style. It'd let us play with Imperial rebels/partisans and explore that side of the setting, while also justifying characters being the wrong age or acting like civilians. It'd also be the best shot you have of having a damaged Selvaria clone waifu.

Pretty much. They're established as the most technologically advanced and prosperous nation in VC. VC4's crazy amphibious battleship, which is considered a technological marvel bu Europans, is a retired Vinland ship that they handed off. Still though, they're nominal members of the Atlantic Federation, even if its all their supposed allies doing the fighting.
