What's your favourite rts?
What's your favourite rts?
The only one i ever played was Dune 2000 and im also bad at it, but i liked it
>never again
What would be a Turned Based Strategy game?
>playing the navy side and flooding the map with screen blocking amounts of blimps.
Granted it wasn't effective but it was fun.
Game was fun but it had a hard act to follow with being the "sequel" to TA.
Caged demons should've become a mobile crap unit after dying in the cage
Rise of Nations, Kohan 2 and Majesty are the only ones I bothered to play seriously but even then I didn't play them for very long. I'm more of a TBS and RTT fag.
Probably Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge
Nothing even comes close.
Tfw no supcom 3 with fixed pathfinding
Xcom, omerta, this type of shit
>supcom 3
Silly user, they'd have to make a supcom 2 first!
Red Alert 2. Also Battle Realm was kinda cool
age of empires 2
>started playing AoE 2 again
>realize I'm complete shit
Who has a good guide to playing this game properly?
My favorites are Warcraft 2 and C&C:RA2.
I'm not especially good at either but fuck they're fun
play Rise of Nations instead
Well, that still doesn't solve my issue.
Look up castle rushing strat videos, Barely make a decent time and realize you're just not cut out for this then play 256x researching tech on gold nothing repeatedly.
what's age of empires?
Get a better understanding of Lanchester's laws and how fast elephants should really move.
this
Awesome you subscribe to spirit of the law too! I love his worthless spreadsheet conclusions
>play 256x researching tech on gold nothing repeatedly
what?
Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds
>256x researching tech
a mod for Age of Empires 2 that lets players research the same technology 256 times, yielding strange results
>gold nothing
a map for Age of Empires 2 with nothing but the gold resource piles on it
it's like a wtf/casual/turbo/joke mode where you eventually have archers with 1000 tile range and units that move so fast they can't move
I thought you said you're a BTS fan.
i'll host an age of empires 2 lobby if anyone wants to play
Based
>play 256x researching tech
Mod that lets you research most upgrades 256 times over. Also 3x and 9x versions in case that's to crazy for you. Enjoy things like buildings getting to high HP and dying because the game thinks they have negative hp, villages teleporting due to stupidly fast movement speeds, berserkers doing their best DBZ cell impression and ethiopians building a tactical nuke.
>Gold nothing
Map with nothing but your town center, a few villagers and an endless sea of gold to mine. Also check out the other nothing maps such as tree nothing, berry nothing, stone nothing, sheep nothing, wolf nothing, and last and certainly least nothing nothing.
I wanted to like the beast side but holy fuck that style of unit creation is garbage.
Herzog Zwei
Ground Control 2. I like how it's more about positioning, map control and unit comp than clicking 300 times per minute.
I have yet to play a game as atmospheric as Tiberian Sun.
I kinda liked it, it had its flaws but a completely mobile side that only uses roaming monsters is neat idea.
It honestly would probably fit better in a different RTS entirely though.
More work?
Empire earth aoc > age of empires
zug zug
Starcraft Brood War or Supreme Commander Forged Alliance.
TA and SupCom pretty much tied. I love them in different ways.
>They never did a sequel for 3DS
Never played it but my brother was into it.
>That AoM game for the DS
That was way better than it had any right to to be.
Predictable.
I really wish we could've seen how Westwood would have done C&C3
Everything ok over there?
WarZone 2100
Heroes of Annihilated Empires
or i have no taste
>not rock raiders
They probably wouldn't have fucked the campaign with multiplayer-focused "balance" patches. Maybe it would have been a bit less rock paper scissors unit balance, but it's hard to imagine them doing the base game much different.
BFME2. I used to go to the local game center for tournaments. To this day I've never lost to a another player. Now I'll never have a chance to.
real toy soldiers
My dude
Shouldn't you faggots be mowing the lawn?
Stronghold
Wargame Airland Battle
>BRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTT
>Sequel never ever
>No Corponations fighting for their freedom against their Hedoth overlords
>No Jonus redemption arc
>No fixed pathfinding
FUCK.
No it's almost 2300 here they neighborhood won't let me.
For me it's aoe2. Intelligent, nihilistic and with a wicked sense of humor.
I play the highest IQ civilisation: Turks.
WHERE'S ME SHOVEL!?
Let me guess: Digging.
W-what's going on in that screenshot?
Aye.
WE'RE GONNA GET SOAKED!
Excited for Steel Division 2 from the same devs?
Either that or World in Conflict.
seems like the end project mostly used WW crib notes, kind of feels like it really needed another level of refinement at least aesthetically
living in a small apartment where everything taken care of is comfy. just came back from a walk admiring nature.
what do you want from a modern rts anons
Earth 2150
People to play with.
>bribes your entire kingdom's military
It only took them 7 years to implement asymmetrical attack/defend scenarios with base-building fortifications.
>figure out what culture your opponent uses
>use force to subjugate a town of that culture
>train the whole population into spies
>have those spies dess up as civilians and form a town of their own
>wait until your opponent shows up and "subjugates" your spy town by force
>watch your spies be put all over his industries, as soldiers in his army etc.
>after a number of skirmishes some of your spies are turned into high ranking generals
>after a massive battle you slaughter his king
>watch with glee as he crowns one of your spies as his successor
absolute fucking victory
>mowing on a sunday
way to out yourself, lil zoomie
My rts top 10:
1. broodwar
2. ground control 2
3. starcraft 64
4. impossible creatures
I can understand Starcraft 64 if you're an SC1 fanatic, but
>4. impossible creatures
No, just no
Or alternatively
>watch your spies be put all over his industries, as soldiers in his army etc.
>they all fucking die because your opponent didn't bother defending the town during a frythan attack
Warlords Battlecry 2 and 3 are both amazing in their own way. The amount of races there are and the variety of hero classes and skills is really great. Minotaur Assassin is easily the best, with lots of leech, attackspeed and chance to proc some aoe attack he becomes an unstoppable force
SuPCom: FA
CnC Tiberian Sun definitely
>recommend 3 to a friend
>he uses his wood elf army to take down a bunch of fire elementals
>gets shit on
>declares the game is unbalanced shit
Bless this game. 3's campaign was extremely fun to dick around in.
what rts games should i play if i never really managed to get into the genre when i was younger
i owned dawn of war as a kid but i never got into and played it as much i thought i would, and i also got company of heroes at a later date but my computer was too shit to run it so i didn't really end up playing it
What kind of setting do you want?
Depends on what you're interested. Do you want to fully experience the genre and are interested in its history or do you just want specific settings and gameplay styles? I ask this because a lot of the older RTSs become unplayable to some people if they tried more mechanically optimized games first
I'll never not see some smug goblin-looking thing instead of the dumb orc-slave.
2 campaign > 3
i'm fine with most settings pretty much, mostly just looking for fun and solid gameplay mechanics
fallen haven
Fire Emblem, Disgaea, Chess.
>install this an AoE2
>play AoE2
>imperial march starts playing as I spam huskarls
Everytime I install wb3 I get an occasional crash during the "town under attack" notification. Never did figure out how to fix it.
I had a really hard time installing it on a new computer. It either crashed every 10 seconds, I didnt get any visuals or it froze as soon as the main menu popped up. Installing the wide screen patch solved all these issues. Cannot say for your specific problem, but you might wanna try that
>Udo Kier will die in your lifetime
>tfw we'll never get any more kino Yuri ever again
How old is the dude, like 90?
I wonder how Westwood woulda handled RA3.
The Japan faction and cartoon graphics and new economy were all terrible ideas.
Earthen peak
Not sure what it's doing in an RTS though
I think only I played certain entries in the command and conquer franchise. Yuri's revenge is possibly the best entry, that I've played.
Red alert 2 is fine for the campaign but yuri's revenge balances out sides pretty nicely for skirmish. I almost want to download it and play it again.
Dune 2
HW: Deserts of Kharak
74, dude seems healthy enough.
>got it free (again) on origin one day
Just like that, it's presence on my computer felt justified. I regularly play 7 brutal computer skirmish games on Near Ore Far. Map all around bumrushing. If you start with units, they'll likely end up close enough to shoot at someone.
This but remove blizzard shit
My biggest concern is the secret protocols bullshit, in TW they've already figured out that giving mini-superweapons for free was bad, why would they do it again?
I kinda liked it in Generals.
It stopped the bullshit turtling with super weapon rush.
This is what chads play.
It's fine as long as you can actually prevent it from happening, but then the chink arty comes in, with power to destroy anything that isn't command center/superweapon for absolutely free and no counterplay to it.
I'm still mad the expansion didn't give us the option to create a Nazgul hero and instead we have trolls.
Generals had free mini super weapons, and they were much more powerfull, yet at the same time, perfectly balanced. I honestly like that way of doing it better. TW had so many things I disliked, completely useless squad based infantry most of all. Honestly, the only thing I really liked were some of the design ideas and the atmosphere which was great for the most part. Soundtrack sucked apart from a minute and a half of good parts spread across 3 tracks, and one ambient atmospheric trait that was actually good.
Dynamic campaign
4x games like Civilization, Master of Orion, age of wonders 2+3, they are also Turn Based Strategy games. All 4x games aren't necessarily TBS though.
Heroes of Might and Magic, Warlords(Not battlecry), Age of Wonders 1 are Turn Based Strategy games, but they're not 4x games.
Chess is TBS.
Counter play is redundancy. It works in generals because generals works on a grander scale than TW. You counter chink arty by cucking any follow up he wants to do. Do whatever you originally planned on, and just calculate for the arty tax.
>>declares the game is unbalanced shit
He's half right.
>Bless this game. 3's campaign was extremely fun to dick around in.
I really like that campaign structure, moving around on a world map, and then doing rts missions in different locations.
The game is super unbalanced. Chance to kill on hit and attack speed trump every magic user or tanky hero. If you have 30% to kill on hit and attack 3 times per second, who will be quick enough to kill you before it procs?
It's completely unbalanced yes, but in such a loveable way. First time I tried the game I did a skirmish with every hero starting at max level and decided I loved the game when some random hero turned most of my army into farm animals in a single spell
I miss those Mines of Moria maps where everyone plays as a hero.
Red Alert 3 saw RA2's Space Age B-movie stuff and dialed up the cuhrazeee too much.
Also apparently Westwood were going to explain away RA2's inconsistency with Red Alert 1/TD with Yuri being a Nod time traveler.
Depends a bit on level.
Say a game of lvl 30s, then every point in assassination for ca 30% to kill on hit.
That doesn't protect the hero from ranged, or help it against towers.
So enemy heroes with 30 points into XP skills may counter it.
Or even an engineering or merchant focused hero.
The game is super unbalanced for sure though.
I remember playing it on the old N64
shit was cash
Oh boy think of the customization, all those differently black tinted hoods.
I liked all the units they added to RA3 and Uprising that were from the RA2 scrapped concept art.
I hated all the cuhrazee new shit though. Like the new Mirage Tanks, or all the Cryo shit, or the bear, and ALL of Japan.
I keep thinking what else they could have done to add a new faction, that wasn’t shoving in Japan from fucking nowhere.
Maybe split the Allies? USA, Europe, and Soviets?
Or even adding variations like face-masks and other elements to show from where your custom Nazgul originated...
>I keep thinking what else they could have done to add a new faction, that wasn’t shoving in Japan from fucking nowhere.
I'm guessing adding a cartoony over the top third reich would have been too bad PR-wise? RA3 starts with the assassination of Albert Einstein, which in turn stops Hitler from being killed, it should have resulted in the world existing in a 3-way deadlock between the USSR, the US/UK and the Reich.
You mean like regular set pieces missions with missing or added modules based on your playthrough or something more?
I think he means like a grand campaign strategic layer.
Fucking weirdo. Game was so unbalanced.
War wind 2 human onslaught.
I think a cartoony Nazi army would have been good. The Nazis had tons of weird experimental weapons.
And I doubt back then people would have cared all that much. WW2 games were all the rage too.
How would they differ gameplay wise?
Allies have the strongest Navy, rely on Espionage and Hit/Run, Soviets best Army, focus on mass production and tank spam, and Nazis the most high tech/expensive, and the best Air Force?
>Dune 2
my nigga
Dune Dynasty is an open source remake, with multiple unit selection
without it i'd almost consider dune 2 unplayable nowadays
>red alert: einstein erases hitler
>red alert 3: tim curry erases einstein before he erases hitler
then who was hitler
Infantry being shit is nothing new, but all the Nod vehicles though, they are in their prime in TW, buggies with EMP, bikes hitting like fucking trucks, vipers finally give some decent light air unit, flame tank actually has a turret and absolutely wipes out infantry/buildings, the only thing that I disliked was post laser upgrade scorpions, that weird back wheel turning into laser stinger looked stupid.
I felt unsatisfied how pretty much all soviet units that were good in previous games went to shit and almost all of them got stupid unfunny voiceovers.
>RA3 starts with the assassination of Albert Einstein
This alone should leave allies with pretty much fucking nothing in their arsenal, given that he himself designed chronosphere, weather control, prism technology and optical camouflage., but the Deus Ex Machina corporation somehow invents all of it, with exception of weather control being changed for that lame collider cannon.
I convinced my mates to buy WiC yesterday.
Didn't realise servers are off line.
Fucking cunt ubisoft.
It wouldn't work with hamachi either which sucks.
Ah well, 4 bucks for the best rts campaign ever ain't too bad.
Gonna have to give it to Blitzkrieg and Warcraft 3.
I really love what a perfect Army the Yuri army was to contrast the Allies and Soviets in RA2. With UFOs, Mutants, Psychics and so on, it really was something else. It’s like something straight out of the 70s.
If you’re gonna add a new Army to blend with the rest of them, you gotta pull from the same era. Nazis could work well, if you made them space age Nazis, and you could give the allies some Area 51 type stuff to make up for the loss the Chronotech with Einstein gone. Make the Nazis kinda like Hydra in Marvel comics, and it could work.
>It wouldn't work with hamachi
Well, I don't think I could find 15 friends to play with anyway.
> rts campaign
Nah, it's not the same.
By far my most played one is AoE, followed distantly by DoW Dark Crusade and C&C Tiberium Wars. Not much into RTS in general though.
Is tw number 3?
Cos that game was fucking good, up until my mates and I discovered that you spam nod venom choppers and just roflstomp everything.
stronghold is such a great concept but the devs are trash, someone competent should steal the idea
Yeah, killing Einstein is a dumb idea, as you get rid of all the cool shit the Allies have.
Rather than give the Soviets time travel too, perhaps they could explore something new with the “unforeseen consequences of time travel.” Idk, a new splinter timeline after Yuri or something.
Based.
Thanks bro!
The problem with adding Nazis is that Soviets already do all the crazy shit, they use tesla tech, created personal power armor, dibbed into cybernetics, very well versed in robotics and their missile tech is literally referred to as V1-3, there's nothing left to give, unless you want to tear away at both allies/USSR which is definitely a bad idea.
you could theme them towards body-horror bio-engineering
Again, soviets had cloning, Yuri worked with genealtering and bio weapons, so no.
yeah but it's not their primary theme
Dawn of War and the expansions were pretty fucking great.
Warcraft and stronghold
Chaos drones, virus snipers, hulks and secondary superweapon feels like a good chunk to consider it somewhat of a primary theme.
the one i'm closest to being good at. currently it's zero-k, a while ago it was planetary annihilation titans (i didnt know it was a kickstarter double scam, pls dont bully)
One thing I really do like RA3 for is the Dreadnnought unit quotes. Those very specifically were great. My issue with RA3 though was it's gameplay wise tried too hard to be an esports game, and that every unit needed a activation gimmick, and had very specific hard counters, so gameplay boiled down to rock paper scissor spam.
Infantry was also much more useful in both Generals and RA2.
total annihilation
How are you supposed to play this game? There was so much to do between the giant tech tree and trying to gather like 5 different types of resources
>Spam war factory, spam tank and anti air/anti infantry unit
>win
Yuri took most of the crazy stuff Soviets had safe for tesla, robots/power armour like shit, and weirdly enough, mind controlled squids, which really seemed like a unit that fit his faction.
Coh2, got way too many hours in it.
Alright, I’ve got it. And it works well with how the RA Universe is.
After Yuri, the Allies and Soviets notice the “timeline shifts” and suddenly they’re being invaded my Nazis from a Parallel Timeline. They invented something LIKE the Chronosphere, but different. Allowing them not to time travel, but to hop into parallel Universes.
Yeah, that is a problem, and even Yuri had their UFOs. No one did their megatanks and experimental aircraft though. Also, Nazis had night vision too, so they’d be able counter alot of Allied stealth tech.
If you pull more into how Nazis are portrayed in fiction you might have some stuff. Perhaps give them some of stuff the Soviets got in Uprising and RA3, like the Walkers and the Grinders. Toxic gas. A flying Aircraft carrier like the one in Marvel. Stuff like that.
I remember trying to make a custom campaign for this with some story about time traveling or some shit. Good times while it lasted.
DOTA 2
Wish there was infantry in it. Nothing beats that soundtrack though.
>No one did their megatanks
Mammoth/Apoc already stand in as the face of the series.
>experimental aircraft
Jets were already a thing in RA1
I remember WB3 campaign being absolutely mental.
>mfw you STILL cannot buy Battle for Middle-earth games digitally anywhere, not even on Origin
Fuck licensing.
I wish units didn't operate on rock-paper-scissors principle, though. Kinda falls apart when you get into advanced ages and non-intuitive counters start appearing.
>dat Russian campaign
Mammoth/Apoc aren’t big enough. Some of those Nazi supertanks were massive. They also had some railway stuff.
And Aircraft, I mean go crazy in what you could do.
>kirov meets carrier
OP as fuck and Nazis are now Protoss.
I mean the Horten Ho 229 looks like a starship.
Don’t make them normal Nazi. Make them Space Age Nazis with Flash Gordon/Marvel/Fantasy tech.
2d or 3dpd
>No Machines: Wired for War
What the fuck
Tiberian Sun always strikes me as somehow more futuristic than TW at least.
You'll need a framework, to build them on, a couple of techs and a playstyle. RA2 for instance, Soviets have flak, tesla and radiation. Allies have small white missiles, prism and chrono, weather shit on the side. Yuri has gatling, bio engineering and cloning , and mind control.
So for the nazid we need their unique anti air weapon, and at least two gimmicks, an form of energy weapon would be great.
Because it is in many respects.
Why did Tiberian Sun get shat on back in the day? Just because it wasn't same old Red Alert?
You could probably leverage a lot of occultic stuff for the nazis.
it just felt weird and downbeat compared to the og
Gameplay I’d push them for Air dominance.
I’d have to look into Nazi tech more, Walker Mechs, Spaceships, Railguns and Artillery Weapons, and Toxic Gas... is a start.
Mine is being creative!
people were expecting more and it's kind of a slog
>For a million posts we have been trapped in this board
>Listening to the electromagnetic shitposting of your tiny self/threads
>We know you better than you know yourselves
>Your enemies came to use us, and instead we shall use each other
>In return for their help, the ones as Jannies will be given two times their income
>An ample return for unbanning this ship's systems, and leading my children back to me
>bunch of skirmish missions on a risk map being better than actual missions and progression
Occult moon nazis? Super weapon could be an orbital weapon of some sort. Gas could be bigger meaner versions of virus clouds. Cyborgs are also a relatively untapped area.
If we use YR as end point, without conflicting with allies/soviet shticks, then have this: super nazis vehicles are either anti-grav or walkers only, they are obsessed with plasma and flamethrower weaponry, and instead of using mutants or humans as infantry they created artificial race of humanoids to do their grunt work.
Every faction in YR still had generic tanks and AA vehicles.
I don't know why but I never liked SupCom. Units aside from experimentals were boring, art direction was shit too (especially VFX), and maps weren't interesting at all. Planetary Annihilation is the same but with those issues amplified 10x.
uh
AA flamethrowers were a possibility, not in nazi Germany though, and you could spread their vehicles roles between anti-gravs as light vehicles, fleet and air while walkers scale in size for traditional tanks into supertanks role.
AI War with Total Annihilation being a close second
I feel like both are very impersonal games. Like, you spend most of the time on the tactical overview directing icons and kinda want a second screen.
I Like the remake but still enjoy playing orginal dunes 2. Like if you want updated controls play dune 2000 since it's a remake.
This is likely the issue, I never felt TA had that problem, and in TA you were never starting at a bunch of icons or moving clumps of pixels too small to make out.
I think Walkers and Sphere tanks, and Panzers work well with Nazis.
Flame tech is good too. Bring back the Flame Tower.
I don’t dig the Ant-grav, that’s more Yuri.
Also, they gotta have the SS, as Elite Troopers. Oh, and super soldiers for sure. The Übermensch. I feel they would have heavy gattling infantry too.
Warcraft2. Playing it currently
yup, Dynasty is how I play it.
2000 is good but the look and feel of the original was just perfect for its time.
Command and conquer series since I still play them every year. I also have hard on for warzone 2100, original war, sudden strike, company of heroes.
I can agree with this.
Hopefully EA doesnt fuck up the original c&c remaster.
I understand how you feel about the look of the game. I still like to play original half life instead of the remake.
Sins of a Solar Empire
For vehicles. Something like this.
Dawn of War Dark Crusade is FUCKING amazing, highlight of the series. Soulstorm was hot garbage though..
And this.
I always thought the ear on the left was an eyesocket with no eye, thought the tusk was smiling agape mouth, the teeth were a necklace.
He looked like a weird cocky dinosaur guy tilting his head to the side. Now that i know what its supposed to be, it looked cooler the way i saw it as a kid. He just looks like a dope now instead of a cool cocky dinosaur guy.
Teslatrooper/Desolator toughness infantry immune to being run down with a gun that fires at low intensity gatling constant fire rate would sufficiently rape infantry and do solid damage to light aircraft and vehicles. I'd avoid giving them straight up gatling mechanics because it's a Yuri gimmick. Be a good radar equivalent unlock.
campaign?
I pre-ordered a game for the first time in my life so I could play the beta. The first Steel Division wasn't perfect but overall was breddy good. The new one seems max comfy so far and I'll autistically spend money on any company that actually makes RTS games these days.
Human beyond the dark portal. I havent played since early 2000. Its not as tough as when i was a kid. I used to go through levels with cheats because it was hard. Now im just going through as intended and its a blast.
Wc2 was my favorite game as a kid, and it still is.
Which game had the best unit quotes and why is it Rise of Nations?
I grew up playing things like wc 1 and 2, all the early c&c games. Red alert is one of my favorite rts. I have a massive soft spot for boomer strategy games.
Any lords of the realm 2 bros here? Master of orion 2? Luckily between steam, gog, and a little origin, i have all my favorite 90s rts games and they all hold up very well.
it's raining :^[
I hope they finally get the dynamic campaign right. Eugen is completely schizophrenic regarding the singleplayer campaigns in their games, they can't decide whether to go for structured missions or grand campaigns with tactical battles. SD1 had missions, SD2 they're doubling down on the grand campaign so that the game is a proper turn-based grognard wargame now
youtube.com
RA2, Tibsun, DoW.
Based.
Homeworld is fucking meme.
>MUH THREE DEE SPEHSS
This shit barely contributes anything to gameplay, butchers visual clarity and turns controls into absolute nightmare.
yes, over 600 units right?
I never played age of empires as a kid. Got it for free on steam and played it. It was cool but there was no nostalgia there.
What about some army men 2?
Base game yes, there's also a day 1 DLC (free to SD1 owners) which adds 8 divisions from the first game with about 350 units to the skirmish and multiplayer.
>Human beyond the dark portal. I havent played since early 2000. Its not as tough as when i was a kid
Played through a couple of the campaigns a few years ago, basically the canon campaigns.
The AI seemed really weak in the tides of darkness campaign, but much better in beyond the dark portal. Like way way too passive in tides of darkness.
b...b.ut they will release age of empires 4 soon(ish)
>Soviet Guards armored division vs the US 3rd armored
Yes, good
Japs with mechs could've been great if they just ripped off Battletech Kurita instead of going for "so random and silly haha xD".
I agree. I started the base human campaign and got to act 3, and it was just way easy. But it was a nice little warmup for beyond the dark portal, which is pretty tough. It was a simpler time, no time limits, no forced forced objectives. You just methodically tower up and clear the map.
I wish Eugen would add the option of having axis and allied divisions on the same side.
TW is modern/near future.
TS is kinda retrofuturistic.
XCOM is more about tactics than strategy
Despite playing loads of them and my desire to give a more hip and obscure answer, I gotta go with Red Alert 2.
my nigga
>warlords 3 darklords raising
holy shit you are my nigga
