However, the fact that I was recommended that game, played through that game more than once, and never even realized is proof that Ys doesn't fit into that same catagory. Falcom survived a mass exodus of senior staff due to Kato's bullshit and their PC market completely collapsing in 2008. If there's one thing they're good at, it's getting through tough times. Personally, I'm more worried about the quality of their future games thanks to chasing otaku bucks, like you said, and the fact that development costs and project scale have slowly began to creep in on the company.

So, back in the late 80s, Falcom were actually kind of a big deal and were on track to become a company along the lines of Namco, Capcom, Tecmo, etc. They were a successful third-party developer and publisher with multiple successful IPs under their belt and a lot of talented developers. But then Masayuki Kato - the founder and president of Falcom at the time - made some incredibly stupid decisions. He turned Wanderer from Ys - originally a spinoff title - into a mainline game at the last minute. He also categorically refused to let his developers program for consoles, opting to let third-party companies handle ports for them. This, combined with salary-related issues, convinced most of Falcom's senior staff to quit the company in 1989. Falcom never really recovered from this and sunk further and further into irrelevance as the years went by.

Eventually, they got here. Japan's PC market had shrunk considerably over the 90s, to the point where Falcom was one of a very few companies catering to it that wasn't putting out eroges and VNs. It's a cancer because it completely reduces enemy attack variety to a matter of pressing one button at the right time. If you can deal with everything in one way, how the fuck can you play around with that mechanic? It's why every boss in modern Ys feels the same. It's always mashing attacking while standing in the boss' face and parrying when necessary.

Meanwhile in older Ys games enemy attacks were like bullet hell patterns where you had to frantically move and jump around to not get hit. Positioning actually mattered. Now you don't even need to move. Even if the timing for the parry is stricter to execute, it doesn't take away that it is literally the best option to respond against an attack with. At least in DMC there's more variety in how YOU can attack and interrupt enemies to keep things interesting even if you can Royal Guard everything, whereas modern Ys is just spamming skills to kill something.
