Average value of a non-dealer riichi with three dora out (i.e. in his hand) is around 6000. He's got mangan so even with a bad wait it's positive EV to chase. That said, dama on the shanpon is still mangan and 8m is much more likely to come out if the other players only have one riichi to defend against.

I was just talking about hand EV, placement EV is different. Whether it's better placement EV to push or fold here is a tough call, but if he folds he's got only a roughly 25% chance of winning the next round, whereas if he pushes and deals into mangan, he'll still be in range of making a comeback, and no one will be over 30k yet. In upper tokujou or houou it'd probably be best to fold though, and as long as he doesn't deal in next round he's guaranteed at least second place.

I've played ~400 games on MJS and thousands of games on Tenhou, I can tell without a shadow of doubt that I had runs of 10-15 games without a single tanyao won, while still winning hands during those games. Now, 200-300 games is probably already enough to make some judgements about the player based on his riichi, pinfu, tanyao and yakuhai counts. Akadoras and sanshoku count is also a very useful thing to know about the player.

I just read the rules of advancing in the tournament and you're better off by playing for FUN in the first round. No player gets gutted in the first round and instead it's sent to a longer and tougher bracket. But the loser's bracket would be easier if you think skill matters since all the good players would get diluted in the winner's bracket making it possible for anyone to win the whole thing.

If you look you'll see that in C and D losers matches only the first place continues unlike A and B where it's 1st and 2nd. It's really hard to get 1st so betting on winning loser's bracket is really a bad idea.

I sometimes see posts saying that good players will just fold if they aren't in tenpai after 6-8 turns. Is that really the truth? I'm usually spending 5 turns discarding lone honors and then the next 5 turns drawing those honors again.

Depends on the situation, but if you watch high ranked replays from tenhou you'll notice that sometimes people fold for no obvious reason.

Generally, if by the 10'th discard, your hand is not ready, it may not be worth it unless you are very close to BIG DICK hand. It's very likely that other players have their hand ready and will be less likely to deal you the tiles you want, while ditching tiles to fix your hand instead of safe oens becomes too risky.

The game boils down to who gets to tenpai first. If you can't win the race, might as well bulk down and prepare for defense.

If it's kiwami 2 mixing in charged light attacks regularly seems to be the best way to deal with stronger opponents. Landing a regular heavy attack in extreme mode also gives you a crazy high damage qte once you get used to it. Other than that just parry nigga

A lead of a couple of thousand points is barely different to not having a lead at all, until the game is over. Also you don't need to be confident to riichi, you don't need to get every riichi you attempt, if you riichi a lot only a couple of them need to work out for you to win.
