Do what? Go to locals? Personally I just go.
When I first went there, I was afraid I'd get laughed out of the store for playing an awful deck in comparison to their more powerful decks, but when i went there, I found that almost everyone was really nice to me and gave me tips on how to improve my deck.
Just don't feel intimidated and think you may have fun over there And you could enjoy some of those special booster packs they give out for playing at tournaments which have rare cards.

I play Dark Magicians but I also have a Destiny HERO deck and I'm working on building a pure Thunder Dragon deck.

I'm too terrified to go to locals, I just play with friends at work. I work at Disney so there's plenty of nerds around willing to play.

Florida, I used to work in Quest which had it's own Pokemon TCG tournament thing going on and now me and a few of my friends are trying to get one rolling in Magic Kingdom.

California or Orlando? Both have really good YGO communities from what I've been told (I live in Tallahassee, so a few hours from Orlando and people here are cool) and quite friendly. Even with the DM/DH deck you will find people being nice to you if you're cool. And if you're build a TD deck it would be a shame to not go to a locals to try it out!

Is the crystal beast archetype actually competitive in the actual card game? I've only played duel links and crystal beasts have always been shit-tier.

For balancing reasons I imagine. If all the fur-faggot warrior cards were beast-warrior then they would become too OP.

This makes a lot more sense considering the game rules the manga ran under, as the rules hadn't really been finalized. There was an actual massive grid where you had to place your cards, and you could attack cards next to each other or something. It made the maze make a lot more sense because there was already a grid and card positioning to begin with.
It mostly becomes weird when you compare the manga/anime rules to the rules of the actual physical card game, and the rules that the manga ran under were never fully shown in the anime. The anime pretended it used the physical card game rules even though it still had the manga duels. It's really weird and makes the anime really schizophrenic as you have no fucking clue what's going on.
