why not just show a cutscene instead?

So you can translate in gameplay terms how utterly screwed your party is because you fire a Big Dick Instakill Meteor at the boss and it does 1 damage
It was 0 damage actually. Kinda immersion breaking IMO.
For NG+ so when you bring in your party of titan-slaying gigalads you can beat him and get a special item, ending, or scene.
>mfw I took the weapon he leaves you when he jumps to your aid at the end
>brought it to NG+ and gave it to the girl he debilitates at the beginning
>murder him with his own spear and the game ends right there as a special end with you and her going back home
What game?
The Alliance Alive
You can give Ursula the Arbiter Spear he leaves behind.
>why play game when i can watch mobie???
Fuck Sony for mass producing moviegames and normalizing this atrocity.
???
What's the point in fighting an unwinnable battle? It's not meaningful gameplay, you're literally just jobbing it.
to experience the 絶望的な感じ
cutscenes are bad game design
to show that you are a spineless cuckold compared to a boss and that if you have any chance of defeating it, you need to be a good drone and grind.
it's a metaphor for japanese society
this, cool games greatly reward you for defeating what's essentially a bonus boss
like Lufia2/3
To provide the illusion of hope
The realization of how often Granblue Fantasy Relink is going to pull this bullshit is already dreadful to think of. So many absolutely retarded fights in which you mop the floor with the enemy and they go "lmao I was merely pretending" or the cutscene outright shits out a "YOU FIGHT BUT CONTRARY TO THE ACTUAL FIGHT YOU JUST WENT THROUGH; IT TURNS OUT YOU ARE EQUAL IN POWER!"
I sincerely hope they are better at pading that shit in a 3D ARPG than they were in the gachashit version, because it was Beatrix in FFIX tier of garbage except every other mission.
It's more immersive and meaningful if you have to fight and fail yourself, rather than just watching your character fail without your input.
This battle was a load of ass.
>Beat boss
>Game over
>It's more immersive and meaningful if you have to fight and fail yourself
Then how come this is never done in Western games which generally value immersion way more than JRPG's?
Because Western games think immersion is better when they take control away from you.
Get good.
The JRPG I have in my head that I want to create but never will has this for the death of a party member, is that bad form?
Because there is the slightest chance you could win and see an alternate cutscene where the heroes get too exhausted and faint anyway.
literally double digit iq
>JRPG
>getting my ass handed to me I start to believe it's an unbeatable boss battle
>let the boss kill me to get it over with
>game over
What games do this. Besides Neptunia 1 with the first Noire encounter.
Sometimes they have timers, you just have to survive e.g. 30 seconds. Or 3 turns or whatever.
Is that party member an amnesiac old man who's also a king, and the villain is a tree?
This happened to me a few times playing through the Dragon Quest series. Murdaw's second fight in particular comes to mind.
Bioshock 2 does this with the first big sister fight, you cant beat her but you can sure waste ammo trying.
No it's not Galuf but funnily enough it is an old dude, he's an elderly scientist who studied the blade in his older days but retired to focus on medical advancements. He comes out of retirement to join the party on a mission to rescue his daughter and accompanies them for the rest of the game. He spends a lot of the adventure trying to get the youngsters to relax and enjoy the journey since burning yourself out from too much pressure and stress won't help no matter the stakes.
I'm still fucking mad about the Beatrix shit.
Three unwinnable fights? That shit was unforgivable.
Chimhazzard
>beating Genichiro on NG
such a hype feeling, that faggot never beats me once this playthrough
Trails SC Kurt Nightmare
i liked the beatrix shit, mainly because of the soundtrack though.

Because you niggers complain about that too
