I like 5, but after playing through it once I don't feel much of an urge to go back to it, or, rather, I felt that urge dissipate after the first 11 or 12 missions. The latter half of the game feels half-baked and really drags; I even noticed this on the first play through.

DMC Reboot had the best soundtrack overall, this one doesn't even come close to that in terms of variety, it was a big step down for me.

Devil May Cry 1 still has the overall best atmosphere, and that includes music as well. I think the fact the game was more of a RE prototype gave the overall vibe something more refined compared to Itsuno's take on the series.

GARAGE is so fucking good, it has that perfect laid-back beat that fits a DMC menu theme perfectly.

DMC5 probably has my favorite menus in any video game period. Seeing the larger than life cast of DMC just sitting around chilling in the menus is such a entertaining contrast.

Streamers have a perverse incentive to play up 'hype' moments in games to motivate chat and so that they get included in 'Streamers React to Nero growing a second dick' or whatever compilations.

Nero coming between the clashing Dante and Vergil is coded as a hype moment, but it's actually pretty unsatisfying because DMCV's plot structure is terrible. Nero learned about his parentage two missions beforehand. We've had one cutscene addressing how he feels about it. Think about Dante's arc from DMC3:

Mission 1 - 6: Dante is a complete cocky dirtbag. Unreliable, doesn't care about his father's legacy, looking for a fight with his brother for the sake of it.
Mission 7: Dante humbled and humiliated, realises the strength and significance of his demonic power.
Up to Mission 13: Acknowledges the depth of Lady's humanity, Fights Beowulf, Realises the threat that Arkham poses to all humanity.
Up to Mission 20: Acknowledges his legacy, the importance of humanity, accepts responsibility as humanity's protector and becomes the more mature brother, the one who's not acting out based on childish fear anymore.

Now compare it to Nero's arc from DMCV:

Mission 1-17: I'm not dead weight I'm not!
Mission 18-19: Not present.
Mission 20: Acknowledge me Father I never knew how bad I needed this all along!

Nero's conflict isn't believable because it's not given time to breathe. It should have been the central theme of the game instead of being relegated to the last two missions.

It really annoyed me how the game expects the audience to buy into Nero's point of view when he intervenes. It's true of course that Dante was being overzealous and presumptuous about Vergil, but to a large extent his hostility to Vergil was completely justified. "Douchebag" is an understatement. Nero knows fuck-all about Vergil's history, but we're supposed to buy into his righteousness anyway.

DMC has never had a particularly great story, but it was a moment that really stuck out to me. It's like the game assumes we're going to sympathize with Nero because of the fanwank surrounding Vergil.

But he did get his DT from his phonecall, in the sense that all of his feelings about being an abandoned child were basically condensed into that non-conversation with non-character Kyrie.

The problem with DMCV is that the plot starts at around Mission 18 or so. Urizen serves as the main villain for 17 missions. That is effectively 17 wasted missions. Whatever potential there was in V was completely wasted.

Vergil, or a corrupted form of Vergil, should have been the main antagonist from the start. Nero should have learned about his parentage and lost to Vergil early in the story, at about Mission 7. That sets you up with plenty of room to allow Nero to reflect and mature, and have more than one conversation with Dante about Vergil.

Crimson Cloud is good, probably second best. But it's still no devil trigger. Devil Trigger is mechanically the best out of them all. It switches up and morphs allthroughout the song. It's very diverse instrumentally and is paced quite excellently. That's why it became a classic, and they did not.

He didn't. After Dante told Nero Vergil was his father, Nero finally after being told the whole game to "go home" and "this is not your fight" decided to listen. Hence him making his way down the tree during the Dante/Vergil fight. But obviously his mind starts to get to him, and being Nero the idea of Dante killing his father or them killing each other and him not doing anything about it starts to not sit well with him. Hence his raging in the car.

He then makes his way back up the tree, by this time he had already made his decision. He calls Kyrie because his mind is still conflicted, she reassures him that the choice he already made in the car beforehand was the right one when she tells him "you always know the right path", it is then that he reminisces about being weak and failing the whole game and being useless when Credo was killed, and uses that as motivation to not let his new found family also be killed. It's not that hard to decipher nigga. DMC stories aren't THAT complex.

Devil Trigger has the worst game edit of the three main battle themes. The flow during battle when the song transitions between ranks is really awkward and makes it sound like the song was made as a single before it was made as a battle theme.

Subhuman has the best game edit, it flows much more naturally than as a standalone song, and the build up and drop of YOU CANNOT KILL ME when you go from A to S rank is fucking sublime.

It dropped the ball in several places. For a game that is so obviously designed to be fanservice, it really fell short on some of the tunes.
It could/should have had:

It's teal, and no it's more blue than green. Only the low poly-ingame model is the contrary. And I don't see what the problem is? it fits perfectly with the rest of his color scheme. The hair also makes sense as he is more human than all of them. I like all the devil triggers, but his is the most unique. Dante's looks like a standard edgelord hell demon from any tv show/game featuring them. Red, black fiery looking and horned these are all standard demon color schemes. Nero looks like some horrifying hybrid combination of several different species from a horror movie AND I LOVE IT. If I saw his shit in a dark alley at night i'd run.

The leitmotif reference was in the previous song leading up to the fight, think it even plays shortly after Dante brings up kicking Cerberus's ass only for the King to assert they're on a completely different level. Love the fact that Dante even gives that to them in the fight. Roar!x4 was just its own song.

Only thing that really got remixed was the Mallet Island Demon themes, and it made perfect sense to. I unironically love Psycho Siren getting turned into a DnB song, and the Flock Off remix is great too.

Well that's just your shit taste. You prefer triggers more grounded in silly anime over just looking sleek, realistic and badass. There's nothing odd about it at all, the teal compliments the black and red coloration without popping too much, which also helps to make the even brighter wings pop. Had it been a brighter blue it would've looked more cartoony and less fleshy which is what it's supposed to give off. The wings would also pop less. and i'm sorry but DMC5 Dante > That shit. He looks sleek and based in 5, and his wings are absolutely glorious.

The biggest thing you hit on though is that Nero has almost no presence in something that very much feels like "his" game. He starts the game, he ends the game, and both Dante and Vergil basicat tell him that theyre leaving things to him. But despite that, he gets only like 5 or 6 character moments the whole game.

His story is just a bookend for the game. Hell, it barely makes sense that he's supposed to be this parallel of Vergil, but tempered by his humanity like Dante, putting him thematically and then literally between the two of them, but he doesn't ever actually pursue power at all in the game. He gets the breakers off screen and then beelines for Urizen while V is actually pursuing power as he goes to find Sparda.

The game is just bloated due to three different PoV.

Except that's not the case as pointed out here Dante literally killed his brother, does that mean he does not care about Vergil? I brought up DmC because the main series of games NEVER at any point dwelved too deeply into the past relationship between the two brothers beyond one liners and brief mentions of the past, yet we very well know they care about each other.

You don't need to have 30 fucking minute scenes of Nero playing in the fields with Credo for us to get that he cares. This is goddamn DMC not an rpg. You also forget that Credo was the one who attacked first. And Nero not only being the cocky angry little ass that he was, this was also a Nero influenced by yamato and MUH POWWWURRR hence him for a moment walking dramatically towards Credo as if he WAS going to harm him and then stopping, realizing what he was doing when Kyrie showed up. However we see his true feelings on the matter when Credo is killed, simple as.

They play off each other and their individual growths affect the other. It's why Lady feels like an actual effective side character in 3. Kamiya definitely isn't as self-aware about Devil May Cry as Itsuno is. When Kamiya made DMC1 he didn't set out to do a wacky over the top action game, he just wanted to make a Resident Evil he geniunely thought was cool. Almost everything cheesy about DMC1 was due to it being an early 2000's game. In Itsuno's Devil May Cry there's almost always an air of "wink wink" about how silly the game is.

The way I put it is that Kamiya's DMC was mostly a happy accident, because he gave a personal view on the Resident Evil, which he felt like needed more action. Because of that DMC1 has its own identity compared to the sequels that either tried to do their own thing or heavily focused on pleasing DMC1 fans (DMC3). DMC5 is a mix of new and old, and probably it's also where Itsuno puts the most of himself as a creator.

I think this song works a LOT better in game than it does on its own. KC is a fight where you're constantly getting pressured by an agggressive enemy that keeps changing up it's fighting style, and this track being so chaotic works in its favor. However, I do wish the OST for the fight had some elements of the original theme, ESPECIALLY since the guitar riff from the orignal theme plays in the cutscene beforehand.

I've been playing these games since the PS2 era and I loved DMC5. I don't know why it is so hard to understand that the majority enjoyed it. I wouldn't call it perfect or flawless, but just because it has flaws doesn't mean it's not a good game.

One of the common complaints for both RE2 and Sekiro is that the soundtracks were lackluster.

There are plenty of reasons to prefer 1 of the other titles, you can even see this exact same argument in DMC3 vs. DMC4. DMC4 is mechanically superior to DMC3 in damn near every conceivable way yet a lot of people prefer DMC3 because guess what, combo juggling isn't all that matters at the end of the day.

I also find it funny that people in DMC threads will absolutely tear someone down for saying DMC1 is the "best" one but bat no eyes at people telling newcomers to skip the game completely. The first Devil May Cry is a legitimate piece of video game history for the 3D action genre yet new wage Devil May Cry fans love to pretend it doesn't exist.

I think if you like arcade games this is definitely a strength for DMC1. Even on Hard you can S Rank the game in less than an afternoon. Replaying 3 gets hard when you get to Missions 14-19, and DMC5 gets a little tough to replay thanks to V.

4 was half of a game and DmC was an unwanted reboot, of course the franchise has had disappointing titles. Can't say that I agree with you on 5 though, as to me it felt like an improvement over 4 which was something I was looking forward to. My biggest complain is that there is no playable Vergil or plans on future DLC, but I'd be way more pissed if DMC ended with DmC.

DMC1 is a solid game, but it's very different to the rest of series, so if you like the whole series, it's most because of games like 3. From what I've seen, DMC1 fans are people who aren't such a fans of action games.
