No. Shilling was a popular concept during the election, because people supporting Hillary showed up on /pol/ and made these posts that were weird as fuck looking and sounding, like clearly that person had never been to Yea Forums.
Hard to say if it was an elaborate troll or what, but let's assume it wasn't. That died out after like a month because people just commented in the threads calling them slurs and shit. Eventually a democrat general was made because it was impossible to post in the 'shill' threads.

But even though the accused shills left pretty quickly, /pol/ started using the term everywhere as a means to disrepute someone that disagreed with them. Traveled to Yea Forums since /pol/ was overrun with underage children due to the election who are also all videogame addicts and the term started being used here. I haven't seen a real advertisement thread on Yea Forums in like 10+ years (they used to happen occasionally). People that blatantly advertise now are trolling and people overusing shills are the aforementioned underaged population

Game industry person here. There are two kinds of shills:
1. People that work on the game that try to get people talking about it for fun. They dont get paid or asked to do it, they're basically big fans.
2. Professional shills that work for a marketing company the game publishers hire. These are real but they dont actually do it on Yea Forums. This is because they cant easily measure how many views/impressions are made and therefore cant bill the client. They're mainly on twitter and tumblr etc.

On the other hand, paid Lurkers are a thing on Yea Forums, mainly to detect leaks and either hunt whistleblowers down or change investment strategy.

Shills are definitely real, much like flat earth.

Yea Forums forums have an aggressive style of debating in which someone places their opinion up as a god-given law and virulently demean anybody who thinks differently. Since most people's opinions on art are "yeah it was alright" and since Yea Forums attracts a variety of normies thanks to its ever present and alluring collection of pornography and memes, the opinions of its userbase are effectively communicated to other websites, like reddit, tumblr, facebook, etc.

It's not so much that paid shills come specifically to Yea Forums for Yea Forums users, but rather they realize if they can get Yea Forums users to like their game at all, Yea Forums users are much more aggressive in shoving their opinion every which way. This results in hapless redditors and tumblrites and middle-aged facebook moms recieving these argument waves. By contrast, attempting to market to ever reasonable redditors or to flaky tumblrites is much more difficult, especially when you consider that reddit and tumblr posts are actually LESS suitable for argumentation and convincing than proper forum threads.
