No. Shilling was a popular concept during the election, because people supporting Hillary showed up on /pol/ and made these posts that were weird as fuck looking and sounding, like clearly that person had never been to Yea Forums.
Hard to say if it was an elaborate troll or what, but let's assume it wasn't. That died out after like a month because people just commented in the threads calling them slurs and shit. Eventually a democrat general was made because it was impossible to post in the 'shill' threads.
But even though the accused shills left pretty quickly, /pol/ started using the term everywhere as a means to disrepute someone that disagreed with them. Traveled to Yea Forums since /pol/ was overrun with underage children due to the election who are also all videogame addicts and the term started being used here. I haven't seen a real advertisement thread on Yea Forums in like 10+ years (they used to happen occasionally). People that blatantly advertise now are trolling and people overusing shills are the aforementioned underaged population
