The biggest marketing budget of its generation
Big introduction to JRPG to the mass market back then. It being decent helped it a lot obviously.
Music
Magitech setting
Goofy cast of likeable characters
Good art direction
Sprite-like 3D models
Tifa titties
Aeris ass
muh 13yo dick
Play it and find out you faggot.
based
Its SOOOOUUULLLLLL
It was super hyped as the first all polygon 3D rpg
Pre-rendered backgrounds
This pretty much. Another thing I would say is that the protagonist's arc is, aside from being well executed, pretty relatable and straightforward despite the game's scifi trappings.
>Goofy cast of likeable characters
Which is what Squeenix has fucked up time and again after in spin-off media, making things too serious and bone dry to be engaging while amping up the emo and pop idol music video tier ridiculousness.
Which is why fans should not be too excited over the remake. It's going to be Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children edition.
millenials first RPG, it was on every fucking platform and mass marketed as the second coming of jesus.
It's the fucking music. Sets the tone for each location and makes it memorable.
The subversion of the diverse cast. People think Tifa's a slut but she actually puts on a mask and locks her heart. People think Aerith is conservative but she's actually a dirty whore which is why she's a flower girl.
Don't mind me, just posting the best track.

this, its typically babby's first turn based RPG that isnt pokemon
Honesty? The music. When I think about this game a few choice songs start to play in my head, the Turks theme, the battle music, boss battle music, the shinra theme.
This games atmosphere was and still is off the charts. The characters were all clouded in mystery and had nice development throughout the game. Having Aeris get off'd half way through also pulled you into this world and made you actually care, and made Sephiroth/Jenova feel like a villain worthy of your time. Thats another key part that modern games fuck up, the villains are always some half baked god or something. If you dont develop some sort of borderline disgust in the villain youre not going to care about much of anything else.
I disagree, my homosexual friend. It's this track:

Every charachter feels like a person instead of an NPC. They each have shit they work through during the events of the game so that by the end they're all relatable.
Vincent lying to save lucrecia, Barret saving Corel after bearing the weight of damning it, Cid realizing that Shera was right and he's been treating her like shit for saving his life & dreams ect... Every character had their own arc that wasn't a fucking ramen advertisement.
>music
>story (great setting, characters)
>not difficult (high accessibility)
>artwork (memorable designs, elaborate backgrounds)
>great value (will take a long time to beat, longer to complete)
>groundbreaking for its time, blew people's minds by being like an epic movie
Sounds like a Uriah Heep song.

The introduction of him with Shinra being impaled by his sword. That fuckhuge snake impaled by a spike that supposedly he did. When you start your flashback and he one shots that monster. The ensuing backstory that results in him going mad. It's just brilliant storytelling through the use of the medium coupled with the soundtrack.
add to that:
Yuffie isn't just some clepto Genki-girl. She's trying to save her occupied country. Red XIII is a kid in a 48yo animal body trying to learn how to be an adult. Cait Sith is a corporate wage-slave that's actually a triple agent this whole time.
All of Uematsu's works can be traced back to 70s prog and hard rock. The Shinra theme takes a part from Kashmir, for instance.
Hey thanks for introducing me to this. The singer reminds me of the singer from Styx.
>the song kicking it up a notch when Sephiroth leaves the basement and tells Cloud he is going to find mother
Really scared me as a kid
The presentation.
It's not just the music though.
Final Fantasy VIII is arguably one of Nobuo Uematsu's finest works, which unfortunately transcends the mediocre game it is attached to, while his score in VI and VII perfectly compliments two instant classics of the genre.
VII was really good at giving all the characters the space they needed to feel like they weren't just novelty setpieces for the main story.
MFW Liberi Fatali got me so hyped for the game... just to be dashed by a really weak cast.
The music was great, but I couldn't give two fucks about Squall and his shitty attitude.
Its an extremely solid JRPG with accessible gameplay, a simple visual style, and a fairly easy to follow story.
Basically all the things Square Enix is going to cast off for the remake.
Reminder that FFXV will remain an all time classic game on the playstation 4.
It deserves it
Best way to play the game? Emulation, iPad, pc or Xbox/PS4?
PSP
Look up how to get it to work on PC. I heard it has the best graphics while retaining the original music.
PS1 is good, but the graphics are very outdated.
My personal favorite is its current version on the switch, mostly because it's easy to take anywhere and it has a larger screen than PSP.
Vita?
Don’t have a switch any more so vita it is!
It's a good game.
I don't know if I like this moment as my favorite or Cloud revealing it was him under the Shinra MP helmet with the Main Theme starting to play.
The two moments are kind of bookends to one another. One signifies the start of one character's spiraling madness while the other represents a liberating catharsis. Fucking love this game.
I played it on a decent smartphone with ePSXe. It's an slow paced game with turn based combat, so the lack of physical control is not an issue. Otherwise you can use a pad compatible with the phone tho.
PS1 on a CRT monitor, like intended.
>TV
FTFY no need to thank me just correct your mistake next time! Thanks :3
Game was filled with content and had a nice modern setting that deviates from the medieval setting we normally get.
One of my favorite RPG's along with Mega Man X Command Mission, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound
Oh sure. Been a long day.
Got one of these bad boys a couple of years to go.
Goes amazing with my Neo Geo
Was and still is the greatest JRPG made story and character wise.
It was popular
Square never figured out. They made a good game out of luck.
underrated
And so it was: a relatively faggot free thread about FF7 happened and is now on it's way to be archived
>the greatest JRPG made story and character wise.
Sup.
The Materia system allowed for lots of flexibility and experimentation, lots of fun combos.
