The whole point of "more representation" in products is to increase the amount of those people buying your product. If your customer base is already saturated with those people, you have no reason to make your character that group or to make it pander to their desires.
Companies are not good people, they are not (most of them anyway) activists. They are just doing what they think will get more sales. For instance, the reason the tomb raider character is being de-sexualized is because they think they can get armies of women to buy the game ontop of all the men if they do that, and they will keep moving to that goal.
The reason everything in movies is having female leads is because, "men will watch it anyway anyway" but 53% of the US population is female.
You're going to see companies (movies and games) make their products less and less palatable to men to try attract women over the next few years, way more than they already are. They take men for granted, and they are right to.
IF YOU WANT IT TO CHANGE, STOP BUYING THE PRODUCTS UNTIL THEY DO WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO.
