Because for the longest time "gaming" was a hobby occupied almost exclusively by men of the lowest social status, and since there was no social credit to exploit it kept out women and poseurs.

That's changed a little now, but it's never going to fully shake off its stigma because by its very nature it can't exclude low-status, undesirable men.

It is because it must be the most accessible and easy thing to get into in the modern world. Gaming is just a part of life. The problem is people making something that everyone does and enjoy and basing their life around it. Your average person probably plays around 3 hours a week. This is a normal amount and almost viewed as obsessive. The problem is you people spending more than 3 hours a week on something that you gain nothing from. Reading gives knowledge, working out or doing anything improves the physical, even watching TV or movies gives you cultural knowledge. But gaming? Gaming gives you literally nothing. You only lose when gaming, you are sedentary, not gaining any exercise, not socializing and not spending time with friends. Now imagine someone wearing a T-Shirt and basing their entire life around sleeping. That is how we "normalfags" view all of you. Back in the day you would be castrated or even killed. The stigma is from the people, not the hobby. If you had a fit, attractive, and productive person who played games, well there's nothing wrong with that. But because of the nature of the hobby it also attracts people who are lazy, ugly, don't go out much, etc. In the same way rock climbing usually attracts fit and attractive bodied people, you can still rock climb and be a loser thus have a stigma.

Basically it's the people, not the hobby. BUT I guess you could argue that the people effect the "optics" of the hobby, since people like to generalize. It's not like they're wrong though, a large chunk of "gamers" are pure human garbage. Like, you could delete them and society wouldn't lose anything kind of garbage.
