you dont, they removed all drivers that work on windows 7 for the xbone controller from windows update.

Check the cable. Some USB cables have problems transferring data, while still transmitting power fine. I had this problem, and buying a new USB cable helped.

Also, install GNU/Linux. New versions of the kernel come with built-in support for Xbone pads.

Technically you don't. W7 dosn't have official support for it and even if you do get it working it will bug out and brick your controller after a while, I speak from experience. Only get a bone pad if you're using W10 and only get newest wireless version as the previous had issues and the cabled version of these pads corrupt as well.

W7 is gonna lose support and there are already plenty of games that can only be played on W10, so if you're serious about playing PC games you'll have to switch sooner or later. I have Linux on the same machine because it's a much better environment for my work.

I'll actually help you instead of shilling W10 op.
You'll need a custom driver, a little googlefu and you should be able to find it quickly. Then you can use it wired.
If you want to use it wireless then you need to invest in the xbone USB adapter- but it MUST be the older fat model. The new one is win10 locked only, even with the custom driver.

I've actually been in a few mental hospitals (depression after being out of a job, basically) and I've come across paranoid schizophrenics. They can be very nice and normal people in almost every way, friendly and sociable. They just tend to have beliefs about conspiracies which most people would say are probably not true (I guess this is what psychiatrists would call "delusions"). I remember one guy in particular who was a perfectly nice bloke and very normal and sociable the vast majority of the time. But he was convinced in conspiracy theories about the Illuminati and the American government, and he thought these people were colluding with the devil.

I see a lot of this way of thinking in people who are like "DON'T USE WINDOWS, THEY'RE SPYING ON YOU!". Yes, Windows 10 does, by default, collect anonymised usage statistics, but I don't know why anybody should give a shit. It helps Microsoft fix bugs. So why should I fucking care? Do you think I should switch to Linux and spent half my fucking life trying to make basic things work? And forego games and major software? It's like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Bear in mind of course I am not a psychiatrist. But yeah, some of these people who are like "EVERYBODY IS SPYING ON YOU!" just remind me of some paranoid schizophrenics I met.
