What's the best way to play this game?
I want to play the story mode and learn more about the lore in this game, but the missions are a mess and everything is already unlocked when I play in schtserv

I liked solo-ing on Dreamcast. Was forced to do it for a while until I got a connection. I'd say play through the main areas in order (Forest, Cave, Mines, Ruins). While you're doing that, do the Hunter's Guild missions associated with each area.

And since everything is already unlocked on schtserv, just don't limit yourself from visiting later areas until you've completed the early ones. You should be able to select Offline mode too when making a room, giving you enemies with normal offline stats.

Is offline worth the time?

Distance yourself from schtserv, they really have such a shitty past a book could be written on them.

Nothing that affects you has been done, but it's a rocky history of nepotism and buying ingame items, on top of silencing outspoken individuals. They've been around forever, but it's not worth supporting them anymore.
Move to Ephinea. The gradual updates they've been putting into the game have been wonderful, they fixed a lot of the RNG issues so that things aren't astronomically rare anymore, and the XP rate is slightly adjusted to make the lategame come to you faster. It's a genuinely better experience and a more inviting community, not to mention they'll port your character over if need be. Pretty sure it requires a small donation, but I know it's something about files possibly.
I still play sometimes on my dreamcast, but once I build a PC i'll be on ephinea til the end of day

I can tell you that that ain't the best way to play the game. First thing you need to do it move to Ephinea.

And yeah, the government quests are a pretty bland mess, especially at the start of episode 2. Can't be helped. The only actual plot there is reading the message packs lying around the fields and trying to piece together what happened to Rico, Flowen and the rest of the Pioneer 1 guys.

Episode 4 government quests are a bit more storyish since they weren't just afterthoughts.

I am positive that is not the case. Whatever flaws they may have, they have more integrity than to accept donations, I am certain. In any case, character transfers are a bloody stupid idea anyway. You don't get to keep anything from your old broken hacked server, might as well start fresh.

I'm sure some anons would be willing to toss some money at them too, or shop-spam a few items with %hit or something on 'em.

Uhh, I forget if guildcards are functional on ephinea or not but, there's always that. I understand the desire to start fresh, but man, I just always found the inability to buy monofluids or magfood to be awful.

I'm sure they would, but the second they start making exceptions to that rule is when it all goes to pot, isn't it.

It's not dumbed down enough for them user. They wouldn't be able to wrap their head around timed hits, or combos affecting accuracy.
