I really don't believe it was ever successful. EA just claimed it was without any proof. When you looked at people talking about it, twitch numbers, etc there was no real big hype. Then it quickly "lost" all of its supposed players basically overnight.

The Twitch numbers actually were pretty big and remain acceptably solid but it quickly became clear that a lot of the hype was coming from streamers being paid to try out the game. I guarantee Epic gave them more money to come back.

I don't think it will be a bubble so much as a gradual decay. Eventually the playerbase will slowly get smaller but it'll probably remain like Minecraft where even though it no longer has complete global saturation there will still always be enough people playing it to find a game.

Fortnite is still setting concurrent player records. It's not that the genre is dead, it's that nobody wants to play any game in the genre that's not Fortnite. This is probably because Fortnite is already a huge time investment with that battle pass and people are in no mood to start collecting cosmetics all over again.

Respawn fucks up the post launch support of all their games. Titanfall 1 was good, but post launch support wasn't great. Titanfall 2 was great but bad post launch support. Never played Apex but it seems they dropped the ball.
