HG/SS, and B2/W2 I think are the best. I wouldn't recommend X/Y, S/M, US/UM, OR/AS though. You can't really go wrong with the others, although play Emerald instead of R/S and Platinum instead of D/P for obvious reasons. Colosseum is also great.

I would go either FRLG>HGSS, BW>BW2 or Platinum.
HGSS are pretty much sequals to FRLG, same goes to BW and BW2, you get more out of BW2 and HGSS if you played BW and FRLG respectively.
Platinum is the only "stand alone" game that can matchup to HGSS and BW2.
Emerald has it's merits too, but it's kinda heldback by it's slight archaic mechanics.
