Pretty hard considering no other studio has managed to successfully copy Souls.
Nioh did a pretty good job of copying and improving gameplay of demon souls.

Except they fell flat on what actually makes Souls great, the world/level design, exploration and lore.
I actually think the level design is pretty clever. Almost every level has multiple paths where you can go behind enemies and ambush them. Exploration isn't bad either, it very often rewards you with items, alternate paths, or the green guys you can send to the shrine.
I think the game just goes on too long for what little story is there and by the time you're ending the game and getting to the dlc every boss is "HUGE ATTACK RANGE 80% of your hp in a single attack with hurtboxes on the first frame". Also normal enemies start doing absurd damage killing you before their combo is even over. It incentivizes a cheap and slow play style which drags on the game even longer since if you mess up even once it's almost guaranteed death.
Also enemy variety is basically non-existent until the DLC.

I have no doubt the PS4 version will be heavily censored but that wouldn't explain such massive delays.

This is one of those games I always find amazing.
They had a nearly complete game and a demo out, then it goes dark for years without seemingly changing at all.
I don't understand how it is so common to not put out a nearly finished game, and studios to stay funded for years with no meaningful work shown.
They delayed it to prioritize GE3 development. It'll probably be out this year.
