From 1 to 10 how stupid is the idea of building a Sleeper PC with a CRT to play modern vidya but also emulating old shit for muh comfy autistic nostalgia corner?
>What games are absolutely incompatible with 4:3? (without horizontally squishing the image)
>Would an HDMI to VGA adapter add a lot of input lag?

the shittier the crt the better

Care to explain your logic, lad?

shitty crts are comfy to me and make me more nostalgic (albeit this is due to me growing up in a poorfag family)

I understand, I feel the same actually. But I was asking more of a performance standpoint?

My family was rich as fuck but I still feel more nostalgic with shittier CRTs srs

im not too in the know when it comes to performance regarding crts but i have a 13" inch magnavox for my current retropie setup and it gets the job done although you might wanna look for one bigger than that if you prefer larger screen sizes

Don't bother. CRTs are good for older stuff but not newer. If you want to emulate on a CRT, get a consumer set and a Wii

fucking autist hive mind, I was literally gonna swimg by my grandparents house later to pick up the old crt with built in VHS player they never use. Might check out Goodwill to see if there are any crt monitors for my comp, but all my shit is modern and only has HDMI, i'd need vga...

>What games are absolutely incompatible with 4:3? (without horizontally squishing the image)

Most modern games are fucking shitty that they dont allow custom aspect ratios so be warned user

>Would an HDMI to VGA adapter add a lot of input lag?

I heard its minimal but I just use a VGA to dvi-i adapter

>What to look for in a CRT for vidya? I can find lots of them for like $5-$15 but most are the shitty office 14 inch ones
Do you want the best of the best?
Look for 2048x1536/1600x1200 monitors, you can usually lower resolution to increase framerate, 14 inch monitors are great for older low res games as well

What if you edit the config files to set the resolution you want? Last time I did this I think I was playing Jurassic Park Operation Genesis on my Mac and I had to set an .ini to 2560x1600 manually or something like that because there was no way a 2003 game would support that resolution.
Everything worked fine and none of the images were stretched, everything stayed as it should and the only thing that changed was that it allowed me to see more of the map at once.

>I just use a VGA to dvi-i adapter
Most top of the line GPUs nowadays don't come with DVI either though

I bought a 4:3 monitor the Dell 2007FP (I have the rare but tip top tier VA panel with IPS backlighting) and I can tell you for sure that modern Vidya is rarely supporting 4:3 causing tons of issues. So much issues that I was forced to get a 16:9 to play most games.

It's comfy as shit playing old games without the shitty ass black pars on. The side.

>Forced to throw away my 98 computer when I was 11 ten years ago. I still miss that fucker. I remember throwing it into the dumpster with my older bro alongside his floppy disks. He used to love typing out the Bunnicula books onto them as an early form of pirating I guess. What's the point to playing great games such as Zeus and Majesty without a pc from that era that ran them perfectly?

>Forced to throw away my 98 computer when I was 11
What the fuck

You could give it a go and see if it also works on 4:3

980ti is still pretty good, but Its more mid tier now compared to the rest. But from what I've seen some hdmi to dvi just bring minimal input lag while others dont let you customize resolutions as easily as a dvi I to VGA

Moms, user. That's all I have to say. She just saw it as another toy at the time, and my family would usually give me so many toys when I was young that she'd throw some away to make room in the house. That time it was a year or two after she split with my dad so she needed to make some more room in the apartment complex we moved into. Add the fact she gets mad when she cleans and there goes the computer.

>my family would usually give me so many toys when I was young that she'd throw some away to make room in the house
Rich people are fucking stupid.

We weren't rich we were poor as shit, but living in Burgerland, having actual flooring, and a functional house means my parents wanted to give us the childhood they never got. So instead of going out as a family we got toys and vidya to occupy us while they worked like dogs.

Well my original planned build had a Radeon VII (it needs to be AMD GPU for compatibility with Hackintosh for video editing) but it doesn't have DVI.
The RX 590 does have DVI and costs like half but that's a considerable loss in power.

>we were poor as shit
Believe me, you don't fucking know what being "poor as shit" means.

You're right. By their old standards of "marry a farmer so you can be rich" we were living the life. That's because of their hard work in giving us a childhood though, which I'll always respect.

Are you gonna use DSR for your CRT monitor or are you going to leave it at its native resolution? Because if you dont and get a 1024x768 monitor itll probably be over kill to get a high end GPU desu

>if you dont and get a 1024x768 monitor itll probably be over kill to get a high end GPU desu
Well the CRT is not going to be the only monitor. The idea is to have my dual 1080p monitors in one desk for media production purposes and the CRT in another smaller desk right next to the main one for meme gaming.
Rendering video is a priority over games, that's why I need a high end GPU.

I really hope that's not USD otherwise this is a troll post

They're tacos, amigo.

why not use a damn multi monitor setup with both a modern screen and a crt so you're not forced to view new media on something that can't display all of it and vice versa

Oh then it's not too bad then just making sure

See I just really enjoy 4:3 for some reason.

nigger just put the monitor far away and use some long ass cables then, there's no need to build an entirely separate setup unless you're specifically making a retro computer with appropriately old hardware and software

>nigger just put the monitor far away and use some long ass cables then
But that's exactly what I'm gonna do(?)

My Sony G520 can do 1080p at 120Hz, and because it's not a fixed pixel display, I can adjust reolution or aspect ratio to whatever I want as long as the tube can resolve the resolution and it's within 130kHz. I play Titanfall 2 in 1680x720 at 160Hz letterboxed and it's great. Because later PC CRTs remember the settings you have at a few different vertical resolutions, you don't have to be constantly readjusting the image in the OSD, you just switch res.

HDMI/DP to VGA adds only nanoseconds of lag, which is humanly imperceptible. A CRT with a DAC is still far and away superior to LCD for latency. I would recommend the Sunix DPU3000 Mini DP to VGA if you end up getting a nice PC monitor, since it supports high bandwidth resolutions, but it'll run you $80.

When you're looking for a CRT, look for the model and check the horizontal refresh rate. If it's a 17", you want 96kHz; if it's 19" or 21", you want at least 108kHz.

CRTs remain the superior display and you're not stupid for considering one. Even if they don't reach the vertical refresh rates of the most recent LCDs, like 240Hz (unless you get your hands on a Nokia 445PRO which can do up to 340Hz at low resolutions), the significantly lower latency and motion blur compared to LCD will make you never want to go back.

Oh yeah, I'd also like to add that you should probably get a second, older PC CRT for emulating retro. Older CRTs have higher dot pitch which means the image will be softer at 240p and 480p, with smaller scanline gaps. Though if you're a scanline fetishist, a good PC monitor is the best way to fulfill that fantasy.

Alternatively, you can find a good consumer CRT and softmod a Wii for retro emulation. JVC D-Series are my recommendation. Having CRTs around is a bit of a commitment in terms of space, since they're pretty big and if you plan to get rid of them, your options are either going to be recycling it (which is unfortunate but immediate) or listing it in hopes someone will grab it.

Got it for free a couple of months ago, just had to drive a state over. Roughly where in the US/world are you? I can tell you whether your area is known for having CRTs. Protip: Facebook Marketplace is great for getting your hands on one.

>Got it for free a couple of months ago
AAAAAAAAAAAA STOP DOING THIS TO ME

Not if I wanna keep my head attached to my body

Aw shit, I actually know practically nothing about getting CRTs in Central America. I used to live in Belize for a number of years, and despite not being interested in them at the time, they were practically nonexistent compared to shitty LCDs.

You guys don't count? Didn't know

Couldn't you just do a dual monitor setup with a HD monitor for new games and a CRT for old ones?
