The wonderful thing with Lodoss war is how perfectly it's aged. My other childhood formative anime was Macross (Invid more than Rick Hunter) and man, I saw it again and it's so janky and shitty quality as fuck. Lodoss war still looks like a work of art. It's clearly aged from another time, but it's incredibly elegant in that age.

The quaint, cliched fairytale nature is what gives it a lot of charm. I think when a series or show or book or whatever embraces it it carries itself rather well. It's when something tries to not be a quaint fairytale classic D&D/high fantasy adventure that it becomes a problem. If you want game of Thrones grittiness in a classic ye-old-england slice of medievalia, or if you want LOTR with a gritty ye-old-medieval-fantasy veneer (Dragon Age) it doesn't settle right.

The artist who worked on the OVA is the same person who worked on Escaflowne, and he also did all the character designs for Chrono Cross. man this show still gives me chills, the whole Project .hack// had some real goosebumps inducing shit. Like when you rewatch it and you realize Macha's symbolic meaning to Tsukasa's subconcious as the kitten her father took from her that she was trying to nurture back to health, and that his mind is subconsciously trying to 'redo' this incident by nurturing Aura (a child) to life, and that Macha (the cat) is protesting this, and in his mind this is confusing because its almost like Macha is the 'dead cat' trying to get revenge for its own death.

Also there was a really hearth-wrenching novel that takes place before Sign that has multiple references through the whole series, but in particular it was the real 'first touch' on the Delta Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground zone, in which a failed prototype of Aura erases herself using the proper version of Tsukasa's Guardian's Data Drain, or Kite's Bracelet's Data Drain, but ironically these two versions are actually the prototypes and the final version was an in-game weapon reserved for admins called the Divine Spear of Wotan (being a reference to Wotan, the Wagnerian version of Odin), a theme that continues through the whole series with characters like Sieg (Siegfried, Siegmund) and Balmung (Nothong), and in Liminality when Mai talks about her grandfather's love for operas, especially Ring of the Nibelungs (the opera that contains all of these elements).

Truly a fucking kino show and series in general, its a huge fucking shame they went the belts and black route with GU and turned it into generic weeb trash.

Look I'm telling you user, watch Trust & Betrayal. Its like Macross Plus in that it can completely stand alone, and its of insanely high quality, and bears no resemblance to its counterpart. Samurai X is like some high art samurai cinema shit, its mastery over this genre cannot possibly be contested. Because of how different it is in tone and execution, it surprised me that it was even part of the same series, and I didn't even realize it was until the very final scene when Kenshin gets the second part of his scar. Its some real good shit, easily one of the best OVAs that's ever been made.

Just please sweet jesus don't watch the dub, its really bad and they change a bunch of the dialogue. I'm not normally a subfag because I can't read and watch at the same time, but this is the one exception I've ever made, the sub is fucking great and this very short 2-part OVA is a fucking masterpiece.

But it did get a DVD release. The Lodoss bluray set that's available now has the OVA on bluray and the TV series on DVD.

Because actually animating stuff is expensive. Animating stuff in high detail or animating crowds is even more so. Animating a huge battle with multiple combatants all doing their own thing is probably the biggest challenge for animation. Not only is it credibly difficult it's also ludicrously expensive and time consuming to pull off.

Berserk 90's was a TV budget, Lodoss was on an OVA budget which is usually a little higher per episode because they were sold direct to video, movie budgets are the highest, Berserk ultimately got a movie but it came a bit too late to get that hand painted cel treatment.
