Last good paper mario
never played any other paper mario games and walked in with expectations only regarding the flipping gimmick, had a good time
Interesting the first time, doesn't hold up for a second playthrough. Every chapter after 3 is a horrible slog
I had a lot of fun with it. The music was good and the story was good too, but the game was overall much too easy.
It was mediocre and infinitely inferior to PM1 as well as TTYD at release, but it seems better in retrospect after seeing what came after it
PAP
Good at everything except gameplay. Some people dislike how the artstyle is different for every world, but I like it since it sets the tone and makes them all look and feel unique. Also people complain about the NPCs consisting of vaguely humanoid-shaped stacks of blocks, but I don't see the problem, especially when you compare the uniqueness of each NPC's design in SPM to the nonstop toadapocalypse of the later games.
People hate on it for not being like Paper Mario and TTYD which are probably better but honestly? It's just a super entertaining game and more fun then most marios
I liked it, it's not as good as PM or TTYD but its still a good time
Held back by the motion control gimmick
what were they thinking with those floaty physics?
I found it disappointing. I enjoyed my one playthrough, but it got really tedious by the end and the story unfortunately didn't do anything for me.
I understand if people disown it because of the complete departure of the turn-based gameplay, but it's still the last real paper mario game, featuring originality, a script, and a distinct lack of toads
I get that people don't like it as a departure from TYD, but I really enjoyed my time with it. It was a super unique game, and it still had a lot of the personality the later paper mario games seemed to kind of do away with.
It also didn't give a shit. Later mario RPG games got more and more rigid, bowser wasn't allowed to be a good guy, not too many crazy non-standard characters, mostly standard mario character designs, whereas in SPM:
>bowser and peach literally get married in the intro and they're both party members
>takes place in an alternate dimension where everyone is a weird amalgamation of shapes
>is for some reason a 2D platformer RPG when that's like the dumbest idea ever and even in practice it doesn't really work, you can cheese bosses hard with little effort
>wack shit like having to literally grind to progress in that one prison level and having to remember an absurdly long puzzle sequence in that one caveman level
First bad paper mario
Good game but it wasn't what I was expecting
This except for ttyd, spm is very replayable
Best money i ever spent on a rent
Not as good as 64 or TTYD but still miles better than SS and CS.
Shit gameplay but has lots of soul
Objectively better than sticker and color since those are soulless pieces of shit
Beginning of the downward spiral that had cursed all PM games to be trash. Writing is good to great, but the game itself is a boring chore to play through. Not nearly as memorable as PM or TTYD. Outside of the main villains and the NEET chameleon I couldn’t tell you a damn thing about any of the nonparty member characters. Also replacing the partners with forgettable shapes that do and say nothing outside of their introduction.
If it had of kept the turn based combat of 64/TTYD it would have been the best of the three.
Bleck's wacky band of followers were fun villians and the level variety was great.
its ok. Not as good as first two but still much better then then sticker star. Never bothered with the wii u version.
the only mediocre paper mario game
Honestly one of my favourite games
That last part with the super long puzzle sequence in the world of the.... Craig, I think they were called? Was that actually the only way to progress, or was there another way around it?
I mean I did end up doing it with someone else calling out the list of commands as I hit the blocks. But even now as I think about it, with how long it was, and how precise you had to be with it. I thought it was meant to be a joke like the debt for Mimi’s vase in Chapter 2, and that there was an alternate, much faster solution to the problem hidden somewhere.
>having to remember an absurdly long puzzle sequence in that one caveman level
i wrote the whole fucking sequence down and everything
i was pretty upset
Fun for what it is, not a worthy follow up but enjoyable in it's own way
Where the fuck do I suppose to go?
First Paper Mario I played, though I was familiar with the series before that. Made me play the previous two and appreciate them more as a result.
But SPM was good. Not amazing, but it was a perfectly find game. Story, music, and characters were the best of the series, but that shift in gameplay really dampers the impact. I enjoyed it my first time through, but subsequent playthroughs it does becomes tedious for bits of the game. Doesn't stop it from being about on-par with the other two (I can't choose a favorite between all 3 of the original Paper Mario games).
Still haven't seen a Mario game with a better villain cast.
Shit. Bad/no platforming mechanics, no challenge whatsoever, and the central gimmick is just "press A every few feet to cast 'see invisible" so you don't miss anything. Boring, boring, boring.
Fun art and character, but there is nothing happening with the gameplay.
I forgot I ever even played this game. Bland gameplay and bad writing. Took a huge step back from TTYD, no idea what happened.
Would have been fine as a spin-off if they had gone back to making regular (i.e. good) PM games after, but, y'know.
I don’t like the game but I respect what it tried to do.
Not being a traditional PM is kinda sad but what really kills it for me is it doesn’t have what I’d expect from a 2D Mario platformer. No running, no real momentum, literally easier than some Kirby games with no option for harder difficulties, and lots and lots and lots of (not necessarily bad, but still long and unskippable) story cutscenes. And also very short.
I’ll take it over NSMB but it doesn’t come close to the NES/SNES games in terms of fun platforming.
First two PMs are two of my all time favorite games. I don’t hate this one or anything but I really don’t like it at all, even if it had a few good moments and ideas.
Dimentio and Mr L are a real treat and it's a damn shame not a single Mario game has managed to outdo them.
Diffrent than the first two so i can see why people dislike it but is a really good game in its own right.
Did anyone even like the 3D gimmick? No one else even mentioned it.My impression is that it was used creatively a few times, but mostly was just used to hide things. I hate how it basically forced you to use Mario 90% of the time.
One of my all time favorite games. It was the first PM I'd ever played and although I prefer the first one, it'll always hold a special place in my heart
Good game, good story, some shit/obnoxious parts you have to slog through.
I knew it wasn't going to be a traditional PM game, even when the interview in Nintendo Power April 2007 said they were going to go back to the basics next game, so I warmed up to it quickly. Playable Luigi was the dealbreaker. I liked the visuals, the writing and the overall mechanics. This is also a great cast of antagonists in its own right.
...
The story of the first two pm's were good but they never got as good as SPM's. The characters are fleshed out infinitely more than in the first two, every character sees development and are written superbly. You actually get attached to the world and the big bad threat actually feels really threatening unlike the previous 2 (albeit ttyd had some good antagonists and story development, you cant beat a black hole, being sent to hell, and fucking count bleck)
Music was kino. Hands down.
Level design was fun and had very interesting chapters. Funnest most fleshed out main town too, albeit rogueport is an extremely close second.
Combat was too easy but cmon, the first two are just as easy if you know how to work badges.
The 3D gimmick is wasted potential that should’ve been in some puzzle spinoff instead where it could’ve been fully realized.
I blame the 3D gimmick for the game’s short length, they had to design each area twice for that to work and there had to have been tons of bugs with that system. The result isn’t worth it.
Worst thing is the 3D is worse gameplaywise than 3D in the old games. Jumping on enemies in SPM in 3D is a fucking pain, I never had that issue in PM/TTYD.
Would’ve been slightly more fun if you could swap with the other characters but they restricted it to Mario to stop him from seeming like the basic bitch character.
Phenomenal story. Only video game to ever make me cry.
it's bad. Retards don't realize it was the decline of Paper Mario, and they try to use Sticker star as a scapegoat in order to justify their shit taste:
>B-BUT AT LEAST IT HAD A STORY
Shut the fuck up you ingrate. The story was overly melodramatic and pure cringe. No one liked those retarded pixel geometric NPCs, it looked dumb as fuck. Now thanks to your lord and savior "Ryota Kawade" going full retard he incensed Miyamoto and caused the snowballing turd that is Tanabe and SS/Color Splash post-SPM.
This is the most fucked part about it, even if Kawade was still making PM game they'd still decline in quality. This faggot started daydreaming on a subway train about that stupid ass 3D flip gimmick, he totally would have ended up with stickers sooner or later. add Tanabe in the mix to get your disgusting broth of a video game.
do you believe there might be any hope with third party studios?
what if some indie studio takes the mantle?
honestly it's a piece of shit in most ways, but still better than sticker star
fpbp
I’d rather take more geometric NPCs and enemies than NSMB-ifying the entire series with Toads and the same enemies Mario faces in every other mainline game.
Only issue with SPM's story is that it didn't feel like Mario at all, TTYD suffers from that sometimes but not all the time.
Good. Mario's traditional story doesn't matter, so the crazier the situation he's thrust into the better.
They strayed too far though. It had to be something like TTYD for it to work.
Yeah that is exactly why it was so good. It was a side game anyway, so why should it being experimental and different be a flaw as long as it doing so plays to it's strengths?
>s-shouldve just been a random different character going through the world
I'd side with that argument in cases where the franchise holds the game back like that gamecube starfox game that shouldve been about dinosaurs. But in SPM it being Mario and friends strengthens it, the new characters fit right in to the wacky world of Mario.
I've replayed SPM twice. It was even better the second time.
It's been a few years now though, maybe I should replay it again.
I'd say PM64>SPM>TTYD
No paper mario game has ever done the bottom half though. Characters pop up in a chapter, you convince them to be a partner and their character development ends with the chapter. Dull and boring.
Nigger the partners have always been trash outside goombario/goombella.
I'd take Peach Bowser and Luigi over the previous partners any day.
They tried to fix that with TTYD by giving partners more dialogues but they should have added some partner specific side quests to flesh them more
