Pokemon designs have always been hit and miss. Human designs are consistently good for some reason. The real tragedy is that the games are shit now. I actually like some of sun and moons designs, even a few of the crazy ultra beasts, but the game is an absolute chore to play. I couldn't get myself to play past the first island.

There are good post gen 2 designs but my main gripe is that the sprites became less menacing after gen2 and the world felt less ominous after gen 3.

The main difference is Gen I & II design was aimed to represent pocket monsters in the wild and > IV gen onwards was aimed to sell toys and plushies.

Kyogre and Groudon were already paving the way for that. They even retconned them to be deities including Rayquaza. People worship anything mysterious they see

The eyes are honestly the biggest dividing factor in design in my opinion, the Dragonball eyes were very iconic of strong or unusual Pokemon. I really don't know why they stopped using them, but they cut back right away with gen 2. In fact evolutions of gen 1 Pokemon like rhyperior and electivire don't even use them

Gen 2 is one of my least favorite gens. It's such a bland gen to look at overall. Don't get me wrong the ones that are good are some of my all time favorites, but beside those gen 2 would easily be my least favorite gen if game freak didn't go past 4.

Right is certainly better proportioned but its still lacking a clear driving theme. It just looks like a zebra/horse with different colors. The hair suggests electric but isn't enough by itself to tell you like with rapidash/ponyta. Its even worse by the fact that yellow is the electric color for pokemon while whites and blacks are normals, darks, and ghosts.

ORAS is great, but oddly enough it might be too optimized. The UI and gameplay are noticeably both faster and more focused on convenience than the other games so if you start with that and decide to move on to other games they might feel sluggish in comparison.
