Half-Life

Duke 3D is wonderful.

half life 1/2 isnt even top 10

Metroid Prime or Half-Life 2, nobody gives a fuck about Doom & everyone considers Half-Life 2 the face of PC gaming

Attached: Consensus GOAT Games.jpg (1644x1668, 3.56M)

You probably think shit like doom is top 10

Deus Ex or System Shock 2

obviously

The answer is - and shall forever be - Timesplitters 2.

Attached: Timesplitters 2.webm (720x405, 2.86M)

>those without mario 3

>everyone considers Half-Life 2 the face of PC gaming
Go back to 2007

Quake 1

> Metroid Prime (4x)
> Half-Life 2 (2x)
> GoldenEye 007 (2x)
> Perfect Dark (1x)
> Halo: CE (1x)
No other FPS game appears on here, how does that make you feel Yea Forums?

This looks jank as fuck.

Quake. Doom 1/2 are great, but Quake improved on the formula, and had much better, more consistent level design.
The actual gameplay/combat of Half Life sucks cock. It's only remembered fondly for the innovative narrative/presentation.

Attached: fake_ranger_big.png (92x96, 2K)

>The actual gameplay/combat of Half Life sucks cock.
>

Quake would be 10/10 if it wasn't for these shits.

Attached: latest[1].png (324x315, 20K)

You posted it.

Is Sigil out yet?

the best pc game is a hypothetical version of doom that consists entirely of good romero-style levels

You're posting it.

fps on console is for children.

You're retarded then and your opinion is worthless

I bet you can't even name 5 good things about Doom's gameplay loop.

Blood > Duke 3D > Doom

Attached: DukeNukem3D.jpg (639x762, 82K)

>The actual gameplay/combat of Half Life sucks cock.
Better then quake dipshit. Better sound design, better ai, better gunplay, levels aren't the same brown castle environment

>gameplay loop

kys cuck

>muh brown castles
quake has techbases, brown castles, blue temples, and metal complexes
half life has... grey corridors and vents

>Blood
ye boi

Attached: 4939164-1007[2].png (615x343, 259K)

So you literally can't name what you like about the game so instead just spout buzzwords. Congrats, sheep. I bet all the other Doomfag sheep think you're cool af rn bro.

lol knew it

F.E.A.R. is pretty fucking good

>it's another user has no opinions of his own so he just parrots whatever normie console-centric stuff """gamers""" say are the best

Attached: 1445978281405.png (361x691, 208K)

I have played at least 40 fpses in the last 25 years. the best ones in no particular order are doom, halo ce, black mesa. honorable mentions but not good enough are blood, doom 2, call of duty 1

Pure delusion champ, HL is objectively better than Quake

>grey military corridor shooter good

Yeah. It's the best "pure" FPS, while stuff like Blood or SW are "unpure" in my eyes.

Why is that?

confirmed by QUADS

>what are the topside battles
>what are the desert areas
>what is Xen

>it's another user has no opinions of his own so he just parrots whatever hipster indie-centric stuff """gamers""" say are the best

Attached: 1501017876020.jpg (640x604, 36K)

Probably because they have a lot of weapons that aren't guns. Although you can punch in Doom.

perfect dark zero

why yes actually

Attached: 1536880975689.jpg (720x720, 71K)

Attached: GO FUCK YOURSELF.png (358x358, 260K)

if you pee straight up you can put yourself out if you are on fire
this will forever make me happy

and Doom has a chainsaw

Everything Doom is fairly basemental and doesn't stray far from the standards it set. Every weapon in FPS games are just a variation of what Doom had. The enemies and their design are made to be easily identifiable, the weapons unique in every way, and the level design to cater around the limitations of the engine, rather than Build's fucking abomination.

>it's a "user claims Doom is the best FPS ever but can't explain why" episode
Every time. Such a parrot opinion.

>Half Life game
>Console FPS
Yeah that's gonna be a big yikes from me dog

ludo is the purest artform because it is intangible

>console fps
Not even once

It's fun

nice strawman, redditor. You should probably go back to playing Ocarina of Time for the 80th time

The principles Romero outlined when making doom still hold true today, and the simplicity of it allows for much more freedom in completing objectives. The gameplay is purely getting from point A to B, while stuff like Half-Life follows an A to B to C to ... to Z format.
I also dislike the shooting and combat in Half Life so I never got the praise for it. It just feels really slow and tedious.

>while stuff like Half-Life follows an A to B to C to ... to Z format.
no it doesn't

BioShock Infinite

>sound
Debatable. Everything in TO sounds so basic from gibbing an enemy to even enemy designs

>AI
Fair point

>gunplay
Nice bait. Shitty weapon spread isn't fun

>level design
Again, nice bait. 80% of HL is grey hallways with a linear path. is the other 20% except topside and desert are just yellow and Xen sucks shit through a straw

Better than hipster shit luke dues ex and doom

Everything in HL*

>Weapon Spread
>Half Life
The only weapon that had spread was the shotgun and the MP5.

Nobody uses the MP5.

Yes it does. There are levels where to complete the area you have to defeat a certain enemy as well as go through the normal level procedures. In doom, you aren't required to kill anything aside from the end episode episode bosses where that is your only objective. Most of half life's levels are just boring hallways and air vents.

Doom 2.
I actually hate Doom 2's maps, but the modding community have produced enough decent content to keep me going for years (and enough garbage content for several lifetimes but I'm not touching that stuff).

>Nobody uses the MP5.
euuhhh what?

It's primary is a dogshit inaccurate pistol. Most people use the secondary exclusively and use other weapons.

System Shock 2
you cannot prove me wrong.

Attached: 1546599010276.jpg (1024x1004, 211K)

Fuck off you and your ugly ass cat

>Debatable
No its not, Half Life weapons boom though the hallways and change sound based on size of rooms

>Nice bait. Shitty weapon spread isn't fun
Better then stiff weapons on quake, half life has a kick to its guns

>Again, nice bait. 80% of HL is grey hallways with a linear path.
Oh look its a retard who doesn't know what level design is, level design isn't a simple linear vs maze. Its more about pacing, variety, enemy placement, weapon and health placement

Not an argument, nigger.

Attached: 1546428657607.jpg (607x607, 127K)

How is it not an obligatory contender? It did almost everything correct and perfectly laid the groundwork for the FPS genre. It has great levels, great weapons, great enemies, it's well optimized, it has appealing graphics and sounds, and it's still being modded today. It's a masterpiece. Enough said.

And half Life has awful pacing due to the fact that everything looks the fucking same. It doesn't feel like you're making any progress.

>80% of HL is grey hallways
OOOOOF

Attached: Sector_D_composite.jpg (512x576, 81K)

>Everything looks the same
Wow you are a complete retard every chapter has a different tileset

>the fact that everything looks the fucking same
Objectively wrong, i can tell where you are from any HL screenshot

Quake is just dark brown shit

>tries to prove him wrong with a pic
>pic proves you wrong
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

Just finished replaying it yesterday and it's still fun, although I wish the hacking was better. I think if it had the hacking of SS1 it would be perfect.

The outside sections of Half Life are just the indoor sections with the roof removed. All I see are brown boxes in grey hallways with the only interesting thing being the monster in the corner, which you don't even get to fight properly, you just turn some valves and it dies.

Then why is 90% of the game boring grey hallways with an even shittier Arizona aesthetic thrown in there?

>Debatable
So you care more about the tech of the sound than the actual sound? That is what you're arguing right now

>gunplay
>arguing quake has too tight of gunplay
So you like sloppy shit like what's in HL? I've never felt Quake was ever stiff and responded perfectly. Like how the fuck did you play Quake and think, "Man I don't feel in control at all"? We're you playing with just keyboard?

>level design
Yeah, Quake does all of those things and better. HL levels are boring as shit and tedious challenges that are peaked at Xen

youtube.com/watch?v=VtI5HM7GVGY

While user pretends to be retarded here's a full play through

Quake was a tech demo, dingus.

Attached: 1555186734523.jpg (2978x2393, 1.61M)

>4/6 screenshots are indeed grey hallways

>That is what you're arguing right now
Better tech = better sound, go back to playing Atari if you like shit sound

>arguing quake has too tight of gunplay
You think shit animations is tight gunplay LOL

>Quake does all of those things and better.
No it doesnt, again no variety or pacing. Same shootouts everytime

Attached: file.png (750x600, 1.17M)

Overload > Descent 2 > Doom

>Then why is 90% of the game boring grey hallways with an even shittier Arizona aesthetic thrown in there?
Better then dark brown castle, get fucked

You mean half Life isn't just a bunch of boring hallways and gunfights in warehouses behind crates?
The sound in half Life is absolute shit. Everything sounds like a peashooter and the only unique sound is the heal and suit stations.
Also half Life as god awful gun animations.
What are you smoking?

Quake sucks, I'm just saying that Half Life did nothing for the FPS genre other than slowing it down and making you wait for characters to stop talking every 30 minutes.

>T. someone who only played HL2

I love the HECU sounds and most of the guns sound good. I personally love shooting the MP5.

youtu.be/WMF0AuFuUws

>You mean half Life isn't just a bunch of boring hallways and gunfights in warehouses behind crates?
There is puzzle solving, platforming, interacting with NPC, interacting with enivornment, navigating

>Everything sounds like a peashooter
Wrong ans again better than Quake

>Also half Life as god awful gun animations.
Better then every other FPS at the time especially Quake

Bioshock

Quake 4

This generation is fucking lost.

this

Doom for singleplayer.
Titanfall 2 for multiplayer.
Half-life for storyplayer.
Pic for kinoplayer.

unreal tournament.
pray (not the new one, talking about that old game with the cherokee maincharacter, spirit bow and shit)

>It just feels really slow and tedious.
Literally just use the grenade launcher and the revolver

>to even enemy designs
Show me ONE fps enemy character design more iconic than the Headcrab in any game released after Half Life

Attached: 220px-Hexenbox.jpg (220x256, 13K)

Nobody said Doom can't be one of the best FPSs ever made. Of course it is, no fucking shit. user is just saying that people like to come and praise it and when asked to justify themselves they don't because they're just parroting and never actually played Doom.

Real talk, Doom 2's good levels are better than Dooms average levels.

I am no expert, but this is the one i enjoyed the most

>SQUAD - QUIET - DOWN
>NEGATIVE

Early id 3D games, id Tech 1 and also Build games are just too simplistic to be serious contenders, though of course several wonderful and ambitious games pushed these to their limits (Strife comes to mind).

>simple is bad

Going to agree. There are a small handful on Doom 2 maps that I get stuck on because I don't remember how to get to the exit, but, other than that, it has pretty alright level design.

>TFW Cacowards still produce at least 6 god tier map packs, 3 death match packs and at least one gun mod every fucking year for almost 3 decades
Bless the modding community.

Yes when its this braindead simple and repetitive

I didn't say that, that's just your autistic black and white thinking talking.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

Build games were alright. Hell, there's still full games being made on the engine today.

Attached: ion.jpg (1920x1080, 448K)

i was actually world rank 2 on rivalnet for duke nukem 3D.

>Early id 3D games, id Tech 1 and also Build games are just too simplistic to be serious contenders

Yes, that doesn't mean they're bad.

Fuck me that looks awful.
But it was such a fun game.

Might want to get your eyes checked

That honour is split between Doom, Quake, Descent and Duke3d/SW/Blood
simple as

Attached: DescentII_DOS.jpg (442x442, 50K)

>yellow + green = grey
Uhhh

I feel that Dark Forces and Marathon are under-discussed in terms of early FPS innovation. So is Rainbow Six 1, absolutely - it even did the whole modern warfare and tacticool shit before Half-Life 1 and Counter-Strike. There's also probably a whole load of HL mods that need to be discussed more in the 21st century.

Descent is fucking shit

>leaving our TekWar

heh

>So is Rainbow Six 1, absolutely
You cant even see ur gun

I really can't pick a favorite because I love a lot of them almost equally. Doom, Quake, Half-Life, Duke Nukem, Serious Sam. Might sound like a basic bitch but that's how it is for me, every game has its own background and merits, I'm just unable to decide which one is best because they are all so great and have their own strenghts and contributions.

Attached: 1540816718669.gif (805x540, 100K)

tekwar isn't a good game, it's almost an interesting from a historical perspective but not worth playing probably

>There's also probably a whole load of HL mods that need to be discussed more in the 21st century.
Unless you're talking about Natural Selection, Decay and/or Gunman Chronicles then I have no idea what you're talking about

TekWar is so bad it's amazing.

>animations
So if a gun feels like utter shit in a modern game but has smooth animations that is good gunplay to you?

>shootouts
And HL is any different how? Quake and Doom are essentially the Super Mario Bros of PC. HL tries to do those with a story but fails miserably. No other game do I hear "for the time" being propped up as an excuse.

based

Got delayed by a month so physical copy fags can get it first

If Quake 1 had a decent melee weapon and actual bosses it would have been goat forever.

But it's basically a rushed out mutation. A glorious fantastic rushed out mutation but still.

>If Quake 1 had a decent melee weapon and actual bosses it would have been goat forever.
Spawn enemy would still suck major asshole.

Doom is like a neverending game, with lots and lots of hand crafted levels. Its like a neverending roguelike, but each level was actually made by hand.
