I've never really been into JRPG's but I'd like to explore the genre more, what are some essential ones to start out with first?
Pic related, I might start with Chrono Trigger on DS and Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast.

FF6 and 7
Chrono Trigger is a good start. Its relatively easy and doesn't take that long to finish. I would avoid the dreamcast version of SoA the encounter rate is a absolutely fucking ridiculous. Unfortunately the GCN version is inferior in some aspects like sound quality so there really is no best version of it.
Pick a Dragon Quest. 4's a great intro to JRPGs if you're entirely oblivious to the genre since the game rolls out in chapters as an extended tutorial of how the game plays.
Otherwise just play 8 or 11. 3 and 5 are good too.
I do own 8 for PS2, is there an overarching story in this series I need to read up on before trying it out?
Also is Chrono Cross worth checking out?
There's two general ways to "explore the JRPG genre". If you're a normalfag just look up lists of popular games, top jrpg lists, etc. and play the garbage that you see there (chrono trigger would be perfect). If you want to actually play entertaining games, think about what aspects of video games you enjoy and look specifically for games that capture those same elements.
Play the Mother games.
I wouldnt play Chrono Trigger first. I'd play something else like FF4 first. Then Chrono Trigger, you would appreciate it more
Nah, the majority of DQ games are self contained with callbacks. 8 is one of the best games to get into the series with and you don't need to know anything about any other DQ game to enjoy it so that's a great one to go with.
>Also is Chrono Cross worth checking out?
Chrono Cross is a mixed bag. It has some of the best presentation of a game on the PS1, but people are SHARPLY divided on the story/gameplay. I'd play some other JRPG classics before you check it out.
Chrono Trigger is the #1 newbie's JRPG in my opinion.
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
De-Fap Tales of Phantasia snes rom
Final fantasy 6,7,10
Vagrant Story
Tales of Symphonia
Grandia
Dragon Quest 8
Earthbound for the hipster cred
Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast has a stupid encounter rate while the GCN version lowers it (and enemies give more EXP to offset). Unless you already know that you don't mind high encounter rate JRPGs, then you might want to reconsider on the Dreamcast version. Also one thing that makes Chrono Trigger stand out and why it has such a great pacing is that it doesn't have random encounters with enemies and fighting happening on there on the map without a separate battle screen.
To be fair, Chrono Trigger is in general one of the top JRPGs regardless if you are a newbie or not.
Super Mario RPG and then Chrono Trigger. Then Final Fantasy 7 and Dragon Quest 5.
Chrono Trigger is fine as a starting point, but it's so much different from the rest of the genre. It's way, way too streamlined and polished. Keep in mind that shit like grid movement and RNG random battles might take some getting used to for some other games in the genre.
Are these 2 good entry level games?
I tried Lost Odyssey when they gave it away and I just got my shit kicked.
Yeah I started with 8 and always suggest that one
Play Breath of Fire IV.
Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age are really good. Just don't play Dark Dawn, it sucked
CT is as entry level as it comes. I don't mean that as an insult to the game, it's simply very accessible and concise.
isn't 3 better? that's what i heard

This song gives me a huge rush of nostalgia even though I've never played Chrono Trigger before.
Yes. But IV is still worth playing.
>Skies of Arcadia
>on Dreamcast
Why do you want to hate rpg's?
No, BoFIV is better. BoFIII is just really nostalgic for a lot of people so it's cloud their judgement.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
It's the easiest console to get games for, I'm not the biggest into emulation and that's pretty much the only way to play the gamecube version.
Play Chrono Trigger. It's probably the simplest classic jRPG that is generally considered good, so it's good starting point. After that:
If you liked it: play FF
If it's too slow: play Tales of or Mana
If it's too fast: play Fire Emblem
If it's too easy: play SMT
If you want more gameplay less plot: play DQ
If you want more plot less gameplay: play Trails
If you want more waifus: play Persona
Avoid early 3D games, because they aged like milk.
Is the DS version of Chrono Trigger the best one to play?
It's not much better or worse than the SNES version. There's some extra content to link it to Chrono Cross, but it's not that good. There's a retranslation which is more accurate to the Japanese version, but lacks soul.
A great one is Terranigma. Apart from CT, it's gotta be my favorite snes game. Good but slightly convoluted plot, great visuals for the time, cool combat.
Terranigma is one of my favorites of all time but it’s more like Zelda than what is considered a jrpg.
Terranigma is an excellent action RPG, but that's quite distinct from what is usually considered a JRPG.
Also, you should probably play Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia first because Terranigma makes those games feel like shit.
Honestly, just pick something that looks fun. If you don't like it, try something else.
