I'm going to be getting back into the game, what class should I play? Right now my mains have been a Forsaken Fire mage, a Blood Elf Ret paladin, or an Orc Warrior.
I'm leaning towards mage because greater Pyro is fun, but what would be best overall for pvp and pve?

What made wow fun in vanilla was the newness of it. The adventure, the discovery. I've already played that, already grinded ghosts in winterspring to hit lvl 60. That just does not sound fun for me to do again. I do not miss having literal one button rotations and one mechanic bosses. Did vanilla have good stuff? Sure, but not enough for me to want to go backwards a decade and a half. I want to move forward. To do new, fun things. :)

8.2 looks decent, but it still doesn't address the expansions biggest problems and they probably never will. So no, I don't care about BfA.
the content looks great but bfa never had a content issue. they need to revert class designs to MoP across the board. the only specs they've arguably improved since then are healers and only because they removed smart healing. the game is simply unfun to play after the 5 minutes it takes to fully learn your spec

Anyone else tired with how formulaic these raid tier patches are? They're all the same. A new island/zone with the raid gets added. Raid opens up two or three weeks later. Mythic version of the raid gets opened up two or three weeks later. Another meme zone gets added that nobody that actually cares about the gameplay will do. Some shitty 20 minute quest chains get added that further the pants on head retarded story and Blizzard makes a big deal out of them. A boatload of shitty comestics/mounts/toys get added and receive way more attention from both developers and players than actual content does. Blizzard and its drones go into overdrive with the shilling each time and every single time it's a massive disappointment with barely any worthwhile content.

Despite Abandoning WoD to get a head start on Legion, it still turned out bad (Not WoD levels of bad but that isn't an accomplishment). Now with BfA actually managing to be worst than WoD (Something that IS an accomplishment) I highly doubt NuBlizz can put out a decent expansion. I assume that the whole Classic project is the realization that making something resembling to Vanilla, an already created game, as close as possible is easier than putting effort into fixing retail.
I logged in during that free weekend a little while back, and almost instantly I asked, "what was the point?" There were a few war campaign things to take care of, and a new raid, but my guilt LITERALLY transferred to another server. I was shit out of luck for anything other than Raid Finder, unless I wanted to resub and do some networking.
WoW is 13 years old, there's no fixing it.

That was wotlk, not TBC. TBC was the furthest from that, TBC had unique roles that never existed afterwards, like shadow priests who were a support hybrid who gave everyone health and mana while doing decent DPS. Every class had strengths and weaknesses, but they were all pretty much viable.
It was in wotlk when they decided to go with the "take the player, not the class" approach where they homogenized classes and gave them functionality that was unique to other classes before.
What did vanilla have that you think is lacking from retail, without saying "durrr vanilla had more" give some examples.
If you're looking at mages, using amplify/dampen magic in encounters is already infinitely more depth than anything in retail.
