Of all those games I've only played Super Mario Bros and Doom. Super Mario Bros is a fun little game, but compared to other games on the NES, it's actually offers very little. Super Mario Bros 3 blows it out of the water. I would never recommend the original over 3 to anyone, I wouldn't even say 'play the original first' because it's just completely fucking outdone. Doom is great if you're in the mood, the music is fun and the weapons are more satisfying to use than in most shooters today. But dying in Doom takes you right out of the zone and makes you not want to keep playing, losing all your ammo and weapons. Whenever I play I just see how far I can get with one life.

Far Cry 2. I can even admit of being guilty of pretending to like the game myself. I appreciate its techical ambition and the decent atmosphere, but the gameplay gets stale very quick. All you really do is drive and stop to shoot 5-10 braindead enemies every couple of minutes. The somewhat impressive technology and cool idea is what made me pretend its better than it actually is as a piece of entertainment.

Morrowind and Half-Life 2 I agree with completely, Morrowind is dogshit in almost every regard besides some of the lore elements and Half-Life 2 is a pretty barebones shooter with a handful of physics puzzles. I kinda agree with SMB1 in that it isn't a bad game, but that its just so lacking compared to the later entries in the series. Everything else you can fuck right off though

I hated Dragon's Dogma when I first played it, I can understand anyone who doesn't like it. I only kept playing because I hate to have wasted money. It took a few character rerolls, but suddenly something just clicked with my understanding of the game and how it's supposed to be enjoyed, and then I loved it. But it's such a flawed gem, I couldn't even blame someone who also 'clicked' with it to still hate it, for everything done wrong and all the missing content and missed opportunities. I don't even want a sequel, I want a complete version.

It wasn't the "pinnacle of RPG mechanics" some spastic nerds say it is but I found myself eager to see what would happen next. All of the endings suck though. The only trend it set for Elder Scrolls as a series is its fucking dumbing down. I wish Morrowind was more transparent with its mechanics. Like, you could work out how hard it would be for your wizard to fist fight the guy who killed the tax collector with a pencil and paper, given base dunmer stats as well as how stamina impacts your ability to hit things. Just that tiny bit of transparency would go a long way in getting over a bunch of block-heads bitching about Stamina management and why they're missing all the time.

Dragon's dogma feels really linear but on my first couple of playthroughs. After like 5 or 6 it feels really short and there's not much to do, money is useless too

I really like half life 2 but mostly because I played it an absolutely stupid amount of hours because there was a span of time where I had no internet and replayed hl2 over and over again and a huge part of what made it fun was getting out of the map in random places, stacking boxes, etc

Deus Ex, Half-life 1, and Diablo II are all amazing games and I unironically enjoy them all.

I'm sure there are people out there who "pretend" to like them, but they are definitely great games in my opinion.

I've always found freeform much easier to run simply because you don't have to try to keep the players heading in the right direction, since you can just adjust your plans for them. The framerate dips are rough, but multiplayer is still a blast.

It's not a bad game, but it really wasn't the masterpiece everyone claims. Half the time I couldn't even figure out what I was supposed to be doing. The first couple stars in a stage are easy to find, but after that you have to go through some weird steps that it seems like you'd almost have to use a guide. While there were a variety of stages, you repeated each one over and over and got sick of it really quickly. Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES was the best Mario.

I'll also say that Final Fantasy VII is a bit overrated when it came to the plot. This is one of my favorite games and defined my childhood, so don't think I'm just shitting on it. There is a lot to love about FF7, but the plot isn't the strongest point in favor of it. The overarching story isn't too hard to understand, but the actual details get convoluted really fast. It's a hard story to keep in your head. There is also a fair argument that Cloud's entire adventure had little impact on what actually happens anyway.

The problem is that we need to judge things based on the context in which they appeared. This game was ground-breaking in the same way that, say, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was groundbreaking -- the song-writing/gameplay isn't actually that great, but it was cutting edge and competently used new technology in a productive way never before seen.

How Ultima 6 divides up the screen ratio is almost identical to how the games have rendered their OW interface since 3. But what changes is that it's down to a 9 tile screen from 11 tiles. So the 1/2 of the screen that's dedicated to the game map is only able to display 81 tiles rather than 121. making it 2/3rds the size of earlier games that's the problem.

Chrono Trigger might have been cool for it's time, and maybe I played it "wrong" by emulating the DS remake, but the game just isn't that fun. It also suffers from the old JRPG trope of just never telling the player anything about where to go and vague side quests. As a kid I might have enjoyed exploring the game all day but I don't have the aimless time anymore. There are much better crafted JRPG's that don't have Chrono Trigger's issues
Chrono Trigger is very mediocre and if it came out today (modernized graphically) it wouldn't even be a 6/10 game
