I highly doubt that, even if someone working on 5 said it, that's clearly fucking wrong. By the end of DMC1 Dante is clearly far more powerful than his 3 counterpart, and he STILL needed Sparda's power in order to defeat Mundus, then needed Trish's aid to finally seal him.
I find it hard to believe Vergil, who should by all accounts be weaker than DMC1 Dante at the time of 3, could have defeated Mundus without Sparda. Not even mentioning that Mundus appeared to Vergil as his floating eye form, the fuck was Vergil going to do against floating eyes in the sky?

DMC5 has nearly the best gameplay in the series. I only wish they threw in a turbo mode because the game can feel kind of slow at times due to large recovery frames on a non-negligible number of moves across every character.
Praise aside, the game's main story is a disappointment in a lot of ways. I'm not even talking only about the story itself, but the way story missions are scripted and designed. It's a huge miss for the game and it's sad that the story is so shit.
I would even go so far as to say that DMC5's story is on par with DMC4's story, adjusting scores taking into account the development time both games had. They both have the skeleton of cool story missions and strong narratives (DMC4 has varied environments, Dante occupying a role in the story he's never had before, exploring comparisons between familial and romantic love as facets of humanity, and the outline of a passing of the torch for the series--DMC5 re-explores the idea of "You need power to protect anything" that DMC3 touched on from fresh perspectives and in new contexts) but due to a lot of focus and pacing issues, the games end up feeling like their stories consist of one or two cutscenes and the rest is filler.
Additionally, DMC4, due to any number of reasons, went with really annoying and obnoxious filler "puzzles" that were boring and unengaging. I think the feedback caused DMC5 to head the other direction and cut out anything that wasn't just a combat room, which makes the main missions feel like a slog because it's just a series of hikes between red barrier rooms with cool boss fights to break up the monotony.
DMC5 lived up to my expectations only with regards to gameplay. Everything else, the stuff that contextualizes gameplay and makes it stand out as truly memorable, was a huge letdown.

That's exactly the problem. There was an user yesterday who complained about that because for him the realism of the characters has broken everything he liked in DMC. The thing is I always felt that DMC tried to go full realism but didn't have the means to. If you want anime stuff you go for FF. This is clearly not the case with DMC, and it has never been contrarly to what some people claimed. It was semi-realistic at best.

I kind of have to disagree with you on that part since I feel like the cutscene direction and acting in DMC5 is arguably the best in the series, with the exception of a few parts (I didn't like Urizen's voice acting most of the time). IMO the only real bad stort pacing in 5 was near the end after the Vergil reveal, the scene of V fusing with Urizen and the Vergil cutscene afterwards with him and Dante meeting again for the first time was great. But I feel like the last two missions happened too fast.
I think it would be better there was a little more build up to the final Vergil fight it'd be better. I feel like there should have been a mission or two where you play as Nero, I didn't really like how in Mission 20 he just...got there, to the top of the Qliphoth. I also wish his phone call with Kyrie had a little more to it, it felt kind of onesided on Nero's part, I wish Kyrie had said more. The phone call was a great idea but not executed as well.
