anybody who hypes up system shock 2 and rails on bioshock for dumbing things down is kidding themselves, I'll take bioshock any day where research is an actual gameplay mechanic instead of a waiting game, the hacking minigame requires skill, the entire middle third of the game isn't a backtracking slog and the interface to change abilities doesn't suck a fat one.

system shock 2 is still a great game and was a landmark title but like, come on why the hate for a game that successfully translated nearly all of its mechanics into a more refined, better presented format?

>inb4 rpg stats
this is literally the only thing ss2 did better and even then it doesn't do it very well, games like deus ex completely blow it out of the fucking water

Bioshock not having a proper inventory system is a huge flaw and led to a pants-on-head retarded healing system.

Prey 2017 is the best of both worlds.

The camera gimmick is the worst fucking thing in Bioshock 1 & 2. It detracts from the action and just feels stupid and awkward spamming photos at everyone you encounter.

i really wish i enjoyed prey as much as any of the shock games, the story is pretty good and the weapon/enemy/level design is all great but holy shit the ending was bioshock 1 levels of awful and i loathed every moment spent in zero g minus that one cool story moment of the dude uploading the message to the floating billboard

deus ex plays itself unlike ss2
there is no skill involved in bioshock hacking its just annoying tedium and research in ss2 requires heading to chemical storage rooms to find different chemicals not just waiting
you can easily run through all of DX on realistic while untrained in every skill
you change abilities with f1-f10 and can hotkey them to specific keys
there is barely any backtracking in ss2 and when there is, it is well done
congrats on outing yourself as a console retars

The part I hate the most about Bioshock is gutting of the weapon upgrade system.

Bioshock 2 didn't have the same camera gimmick as 1. Instead you'd start recording a specific type of enemy and would be rewarded with research points by killing said enemy type in different, creative ways. Worked a lot better, imo.

>implying playing risk-free click 3 buttons in a row to win takes more skill than a minigame you can actually lose
>not only do you have to wait to research things in system shock 2, you have to backtrack too
>backtracking
>well done

Why are you defending literally the worst parts of this game

>the hacking minigame requires skill
The only "skill" required for Bioshock's hacking segments is trying to uncover as many of the tiles as possible when it first starts up. None of the puzzles are difficult in any way, and the minigame itself just becomes a tedious slog once you hit the game's halfway point.

BAIT, no one is that retarded.

There's nothing wrong with backtracking.

please explain to me how the hacking minigame in ss2 is anything less of a waste of time than modern games telling you to repeatedly tap E to open a door

I like backtracking in hub world games or survival horror as it adds a frantic " oh fuck " moment as you cross bad territory.

>bart simpson book report the post.
BAIT.

mindlessly calling bait instead of an actual rebuttal, cool, good to know i can completely disregard anything you say

I usually hate it but backtracking is fine when it's done with a steadily changing environment and/or new enemies/weapons, I think Dead Space 1 got a lot of mileage out of its level design like this

this

bioshock 1 was great but no inventory was pretty fucking stupid

Want me to tell you why I know you played Bioshock before learning of System Shock 2?

>research is an actual gameplay mechanic instead of a waiting game
Retarded pulling camera all the time is not better, and only breakes pacing.
>research is an actual gameplay mechanic instead of a waiting game
It doesn't. This minigame is piss easy, and becomes repetative after a few tries, and stays that to the end of the game.
> the entire middle third of the game isn't a backtracking slog
No, its just a slog, especially with all the enemies growing additional layer of armor and story becoming way more boring while also turning the only interesting character into a punch clock villain of the week.
> the entire middle third of the game isn't a backtracking slog
True.

Shooting is bad. It was not good in SS2, but it was a long time ago on an engine which was not supposed to be used for shooters, and there were also enough abilities to avoid using guns almost whatsoever. In BioShock you have to use wrench or weapons, and shooting sucks, even though they had an engine which was created for shooters.

Tell me instead, please.

The only original thing Bioshock has going of it is its setting. It stole System Shock 2's narrative structure beat for beat.

Did somebody say Ricardo?

want me to tell you why you're fucking retarded, I had a period in like ~2009 where i didnt have any consoles or a good pc so all i did was play old school pc games, it's when i fell in love with shit like thief 2 and quake, so yeah i played ss2 before bioshock

>system shock 2
>survival horror game
>respawning enemies
>in a game with limited ammo

no thanks

>>respawning enemies
>>in a game with limited ammo
You made a mistake somewhere around here.

There's a glitch to get infinite pistol ammo during the tutorial level, which carries over to the rest of the game. Use that if the game having respawning enemies really turns you off.

I liked Bioshock but it was way too easy.

This isnt about bioshock u retard

>hate for a game that successfully translated nearly all of its mechanics into a more refined, better presented format?
What did OP mean by this?

Both games shit the bed in their second halves

t. zoomer

>the hacking minigame requires skill
which the character may/may not have, instead of the player
it's an rpg
you wanted doom with spells

>character skills, not player skills
fair point but why not have both? prey managed to do it better than any of the shock games and i'm pretty sure 1999 computers could handle a circle bumping around some fucking rectangles

its not survival horror retard and there isnt limited ammo

it's called a skill check retard, you're playing an rpg, not super mario pipe cleaning

there's diminishing returns on what the enemies drop so yeah it's limited

then why even have a time wasting minigame instead of just saying "ok you have hack 2, spend 20 nanites and instantly unlock this"

it's a fucking stupid part of the game and it's everywhere case closed
