What part of the bell of awakening don't you understand? It bring people back to life even if they crumpled to dust as hollows. This is how Siegward returned even though he hollowed in I. The state of the DaS III world is so utterly fucked you literally have to bring people back from the dead to rekindle the flame.
Nobody cared about DaS II smiths, one was a bizzare Demon Souls reference and the other was a babbling retard. Also there was the Crow with the nice ass.

i agree. they were just pandering. there was no actual lore reason or explanation that went into andre being there like:

you can't even assume andre is the best thing because the chosen undead isn't really important in dark souls. there's been tons of people who linked the flame, so why not one of their blacksmiths? i wonder what blacksmith yhorm used.
