Why did the Dreamcast fail?

Normalfags

PS2 ate its lunch AND played DVDs. I really liked mine, but even back then I knew what was happening.

Bad Saturn rep leading in.
Good PS(X) rep leading in.
Focus on online before people were ready.

Had a beast of a launch lineup though.

Afaik niggas went in and stole a dev kit and got rid of an antipiracy .bin scrambler that would have corrupted burnt games.

This. I would also add generally bad marketing (the Sega special) and the fact that it still sticked really hard to that "Arcade at home" mindset when Arcade was basically already dead in the West.
It still has some amazing games and is probably one my favourite console of all time.

they had a shitty reputation regarding hardware after all the Genesis tumors they thought up. Saturn was shit too.
PS1 and PS2 killed SEGA.

casuals

ps1 was still mega popular so lazy devs just ported games from it instead of making actual dreamcast games

Basically they had a strong start but afterwards everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Luck really wasn't on their side either due to a lot of circumstance like the ps2 coming + dvd, and the ps1 still getting mad big releases. The dreamcast had skies of arcadia while the ps1 had FF9, it tells you pretty much everything.
Even though they had a big support from companies like capcom, fighting games were at their lowest period in terms of popularity, they also were still lacking in rpgs wchich was THE genre back then.
So in the ened yeah, everything taht could've been a threat was a threat and everything that could go wrongh, went wrong

it entertained me and brought me enjoyment so it didnt fail

Sega was burning through way too much money. Shenmue had a ridiculous at the time budget of something like 60 million dollars I think. They needed to sell something weird like 2 Shenmue copies for every Dreamcast they produced just to even break even on Shenmue which obviously wasn't going to happen. Then you add this on top of the massive failure that was the Saturn and its easy to see why it failed on these two things alone. It actually was pretty well liked for its short run and everyone I know bought one. It just was Sega being Sega though in their last breath before the cord to their life support got pulled from them. Dreamcast needed beyond a miracle just to save itself and Sega. It wasn't going to be happening.

Still got my Dreamcast with a few games left. Haven't played it in forever. Damn shame knowing only years later why Sega stopped making consoles. They were a fucking mess of a developer and got nobody to blame but themselves.

It was too ahead of its time

It's literally pleb filter: the console

PS2s stronger marketing campaign + DVD player, Nintendos back to back 10/10s, and lack of third party support.

Dreamcast sold like crazy during its short-run. It didn’t matter in the end because Sega was already burning down since the Saturn crashed and burned and both corporate branches were killing eachother out of jelousy since the Genesis. Faggots will claim that it was the PS2, its DVD drive or piracy, but all of those only served to seal the deal.

>Nintendos back to back 10/10s
this has absolutely nothing to do with the dreamcast failing, nintendo weren't really doing that great either at that time

The writing was already on the wall for Sega. It's less that the Dreamcast failed and more that it was a hail mary that didn't pan out.

Arcades still alive. Sega just released Daytona 3 and House of the Dead Scarlett Dawn last year. Namco got Maximum Tune 6 coming up and it's got an English translation already.

I played Shenmue for the first time a couple years ago. Gotta say I dont see the budget.

>Gotta say I dont see the budget.

How old are you? You do realize the game is old right?

came out at the wrong time.

this. Dreamcast actually sold relativly well. I think it possibly did better than the gamecube in its timeframe. It just didnt sell well enough.

Watch some youtube videos, there are plenty that cover the topic in excruciating detail. Basically Sega made several retarded decisions between the Genesis and the Dreamcast, there was a weird rivalry between the Japanese and American divisions, too many peripherals and random trash that eroded consumer's confidence in the company.

Because Sega was always terrible when it came to business. They made great video games which were able to keep their bad business sense at bay for a while, but it was always going to catch up to them.

32.

Your right though maybe I just lost perspective.

No, it was a hail mary that panned out, the problem was that even with that hail mary they were still several possessions behind. They were never going to win, but they left everything they had on the field.

Sega CD
Sega 32x
Sega Saturn
Game Gear
Failure after failure... Why did the Dreamcast fail you ask? Because no one trusted Sega.

Bad advertising from sega plus they canceled the console early.

One of the coolest things about dreamcast is if you open it up it has a nice layout to it making it easy to mod and repair.

>hurr durr the shitcast sold well but sega bankrupted!!!
if that were true, where are the sales numbers? because if it sold well, it shouldnt bankrupted sega. and if sega didnt have money, how did they make new games?

The best thing about it is how easy it is to add an hdmi output and a hard drive to replace its shitty disc reader. It’s rad.

Yeah nigga you might want to go get checked for some Alzheimer kek. Don't worry though my mind has been getting hazy too ;_;

....I miss those Dreamcast days

Ps2 was only announced at the time of dreamcast and n64
Ps2 didn't even hit store shelves unroll 2 years after dreamcast was out.

they didn't go bankrupt or stop making games they just dropped out of the console race after a series of missteps like listed.

That was the big reason I didn't buy the dreamcast I was afraid sega would stop supporting it to launch another console 18 months later.

The price for the dreamcast new was pretty fair.

I also didn't like the look of the controllers.

Seeing people swap out the disc drive for a card reader is awesome.

Also saw people redo the battery by putting in a slot for a battery instead of a soldered on battery.

because sage doesn't know what the fuck its doing.

no dvd support and sega Japan refused to get on board with exploiting the sports market in America. Imagine if 2k wasn't just for basketball

forgot about the Nomad

Well EA did steal that NFL license right out from under them.
