It started as a show where being a Zombie is important to the plot as the idols constantly impress others by doing non-idol like things and even impromptu their way out of shit.
It then proceeds to become a show where there is some drama at the start of the episode that usually ends with them singing normally at the end. Also, the zombie aspect falls into irrelevancy.
Instead of "Here's a show with zombie idols." It ended up becoming "Here's a show with idols, also they are zombies."

Any misgivings I had about S2 were forgiven for the Meiji flashback arc (and I also immediately understood why they didn't try and explore Yuugiri's backstory into the first season like most of the others).
I wonder if we'll get something similar for Junko in the future, being as popular as she is. I like the theory that Okaba was a big fan of hers in his youth, and it would be interesting if it tied into his character as well.

Hmm it's true I don't remember much from S2. The idol stuff was more of the same I think, and that whole lengthy flashback did nothing for me as well as the strange disaster plot. It was a relatively weak season compared to the fun and wholesome quirkiness of the first.

The hype already died after I believe episode 4 of S1. The one where they had the first actual idol moment, with CGI dance and all. The animation was so bad everyone assumed at first it's another parody of the genre, with intentional poor animation following death metal episode, rap episode, further making fun of the genre. No luck, it played it completely straight till the end after that. I see the show is still pretty popular, but the remaining fanbase are just idolfags. I finished S1, and deemed it ok, but never bothered with S2, and I assume most people who thought it would be some sort of parody/deconstruction did the same.

Wasn't it a completely different writer for episodes 1 and 2? It's like they didn't talk to each other at all about what the show would be about. I remember a lot of people being really hyped about different music genres that they could cover after death metal and rap, but it went straight into idolshit. Same boat as you, it was the biggest letdown I've seen from the first couple episodes.

Plus it leaves a lot of the more interesting plot points hanging in unsatisfying ways. For example, this is not a show that should go to great lengths to maintain the masquerade for this long. There's no real reason why Lily's father has to be left in the dark. The inherent weirdness of the premise keeps getting pushed into the background just to give them reason to sing a song. This is a show that should be undermining cliches, not following them.
