I was under the impression girls buying YA scifi/fantasy written by women was more or less keeping the publishing industry going

Women read more fiction these days, so it's understandable that they would find female writer's sensibilities more appealing. I take no stock in the petty "gender war" thing.

My rule of thumb now is to never read a book written by a woman who was first published after 2010. It's worked really well.

It makes sense. Bored, middle aged Housewives have to do something with their lives and so most of them blog, write, or do art. They also are better at forming a circle jerk cult to elevate their own works or develop cult followings. So, it's not a mystery why they dominate an industry that's more about 'who you know,' rather than whether or not the writing is any good.

There is still the occasional good book being written today, but very few. Then again, very few good books were likely being written back then either, it's just that the crappy ones have been lost or forgotten because they didn't stand the test of time. (That said, while in principle I agree this is an argument for reading mainly old books, I still read some modern works because I am LGBT and like to occasionally see people like me represented positively.)

I remember trying to look up some list of historical fiction novels to choose from. Now goodreads obviously is more normal, but then I've looked at some articles and they all were just fucking advertising materials.
