Much as I hate to say it, there were some serious death flags for Saeko. She's our favorite character and easily is best girl, but the author seemed quite interested in sending her off to cement Roach as the winner of the Takashibowl.
Hence the feud that ended his relationship with Inazuma, who was pulling for Saeko. Everyone forgets that HOTD stopped updating YEARS before the author died, and most people speculate that the Saeko vs Rei split between Inazuma and Sato is what caused them to stop collaborating.

I honestly think it's sensible to kill off Rei. I reread the manga recently, and one of the overarching themes of it (it does have themes beyond the titties and gun porn) is that the world is over, so what are you going to do now? A big theme of the story is the cast coming to terms with the fact that this is the no-joke zombie apocalypse and things are fucked in a way that will never be undone.
And the whole cast has a different reaction to this. Kohta and Saeko both embrace the end of the world, hence why they function so well in the apocalypse. Saya and Takashi are a bit in the middle, Takashi moreso, trying to walk a tightrope between adapting and still keeping a semblance of the old order of things. Shizuka and Rei are on the other end. Nurse is a bit of an enigma because she doesn't get as much focus as the teens, but overall she still seems to hope that everything will work out. Rei, on the other hand, we pointedly see resisting the idea of adapting to the end of the world. Roach is VERY invested in the idea that eventually things will go back to normal. Notice that she never changes her clothes; Saeko, Shizuka, and Saya all go through multiple outfit changes, but Rei remains in her schoolgirl uniform in a way that feels symbolic.
So in this regard, the love triangle between Saeko, Rei, and Takashi is about Takashi having to choose which side of the spectrum he's going to land on. Is he going to pick Rei, and try as hard as possible to keep things like they were before? Or is he going to pick Saeko, and embrace the apocalypse, with all the dangers, but also all the opportunities that come with it?

Shidou is exactly how you set Rei up to die. Remember how things leave off right as the manga ends for good: they've found Rei's mom and they're headed to the evacuation site, which is at the elementary school where Takashi's mom teaches. But we know Shidou arrives there ahead of them.
Here's an easy scenario: the gang gets to the evacuation site only to find that Shidou has pulled his usual bullshit and started up a charismatic sect and taken everything over. Rei's dad is there also. There's a fight and a conflict, particularly when the SDF shows up. Rika probably shows up by now as well.
In the chaos, Shidou manages to sic his group on Rei's father, and Rei's father winds up being killed. This causes Rei to go crazy and finally kill Shidou herself, doing what she didn't do at Saya's house.
This starts Rei on a downward spiral. Over the next couple of chapters, the death of her father combined with her taking the life of a human cause her to grow increasingly mentally unstable. This isn't helped by her growing suspicion that Saeko intends to take Takashi for herself.
Eventually Rei goes completely crazy and threatens to kill Saeko. Inconveniently, a horde of the zombies attack them then. Rei sees Takashi instinctively move in front of Saeko to shoot at them with his shotgun. This is the last straw for Rei, and as everyone watches in horror, she runs into the zombie horde and is ripped apart.
That, at least, is how I'd do it. It takes the various elements of her character and brings them to a head in an awful way, a way that fits the setting.

Fuck, in all the years I've read and re-read this series I never noticed this imagery. Not only does she want normalcy, her entire quest has been to find her parents and she hopes that they are safe. Despite most every other member of the cast barring the Nurse having been forced to reconcile that things are never going back to normal. Saya's parents are dead or on the run and she knows that. Kohta had to kill the police woman and is coping with that. Takashi had to kill his best friend. And Saeko has already come to terms with the fact that she enjoys the new state of things because it allows her to be a righteous killer. While Rei is still helping out she's definitely trying to not lose herself in this mad new world and desperate to have her family be unsullied by the hordes.
Damnit user, I thought I was over the series never being finished. But you made me learn something new about it and now I'm going to have to re-read it. Fuck you in the nicest way possible.

There's definitely a little "there" there. You can chalk her kissing him in Rika's house to her being drunk, but she definitely seems to like him. The main romantic conflict in the manga towards the end of it is obviously the love triangle with Rei/Saeko/Takashi, but Nurse is lurking in the background. It's something that could have become a thing in the manga had run longer.

I've shilled it a bit in the past, but only because I like it a lot. It finishes the story in a very interesting way that manages to satisfy. It's quite rare among HOTD fics in that it's Shizuka-centric. It does some very interesting things with the cast. Everyone's either in-character or is out of character in ways that are believable and make sense. And it deals very directly with the idea of who can and can't adapt to the "new world" that the zombie apocalypse has created. It's literally brand new, too, it only finished up a month ago.
