Something I've been wondering and forgot to ask 2 threads ago. Why is The Lifemaker called a 'he' or 'him' at nearly every turn, even by their creations when saying stuff like "inheriting HIS will", yet they're a girl in UQ Holder and everyone acts like that's how its always been, even their creations which had no reason to try and hide what they were or anything. You could say it doesn't really matter with the whole possession thing going on and having all kinds of hosts, but still.

Secondly why were they so fixated on the Magical World alone when the greater problem was The Lifemaker's power source and infinite empathy? They obviously had to get everyone besides just Mundus Magicus to solve that, yet there's never so much as any discussions or plans beyond it and all the focus is on Mundus Magicus, even in the flashbacks. Heck, UQ Holder also shows that The Lifemaker's created world extends into the Asteroid Belt somehow and isn't solely on Mars' surface. The only thing I can think of is all the focus was on Mundus Magicus, since even if it was decades down the line, Earth isn't going anywhere for a long time and they could take their time on that. Still feels weird it never came up before though.

Akamatsu mentions specifically that a number of characters chest sizes change during the series, but having read through the series a few times it definitely doesn't seem noticeable to me, though it's one of those things that may be hard to separate from natural variations in design and evolving art style. Akamatsu's style is usually really clean and precise though, which is one of the reasons I like it so much.

I expect it's because the pronouns were gender-neutral in Japanese and nothing was revealed about the Lifemaker until much later. Out of all the characters present, most have never seen the Lifemaker in person anyway. And the current Lifemaker is Nagi anyway, so it's a male body. But AFAIK, none of them know that.

As for the oversight regarding Ialda's real powers, I suspect it's because none of them know. Even Eva doesn't know about the Lifemaker (and her relation to Eva's vampirism) yet. Albireo is the only one who knows a lot about it, and Negi presumably finds out some time after he returns from the magic world (by which time Albireo has shared this info with Eishun, Konoemon, Eva, etc.).

The only hint is when Dynamis says something about Negi's plan not solving the root of the problem later.. But, even in the flashbacks to stuff like Fate's past or all, they still act like the magical world is THE thing to save and everything is fine once it's done. At least how I remember.

All of the things happening seem a little... hurried. Not rushed as in they were running out of time, but forced along just to reach the conclusion faster. I don't think Ken planned on Kodansha trying to pull whatever they were aiming for, but I do feel like he's trying to hurry the plot along towards THE END. The rest don't really have much of a reason to know. Fate and his peers are all dolls manufactured for the sole purpose of being gofers in this plan. They're replaceable, and have been replaced several times already. Of the rest, Tsukuyomi just wants to fight, which leaves only Dynamis and maybe the Master of the Gravekeeper's Palace left. But we have basically zero information on the latter, so it's hard to say how much she should know. I believe it's hinted that she's just going along for the ride and letting them chill out in her pad, rather than being a core member of Cosmo Entelekheia though.

Them, especially Fate, not knowing seems doubtful, given he's the one who exposition dumps about Ialda's resonance in UQ Holder and he, in the flashback, also is the one who states they can track down Ialda using Asuna's powers. He clearly knows quite a bit.

I agree and actually have always felt the latter end of the MW arc is a bit of a mess, unrelated to the publisher drama. There was too much going on, the next volume is a telling example of this, we get another string of pactios and it feels rushed and like he just needed to get them out of the way. I feel like he could have fit them in more naturally at other points of this arc.

I consider Negima one of my favorite manga but I do agree with this. I remember when this arc was coming out around this point I just felt frustrated with every other chapter. Re-reading it all at once is pretty exhausting.

I think the manga was better about this sort of thing earlier on, so I think Ken just made the mistake of bringing too many characters to the MW, especially when he went and introduced a bunch more.

2. Do all the training in Eva's resort, but have it only as a side piece while Negi goes around meeting with/helping/being helped by the regular classmates who aren't part of Ala Alba. Expand on all their characters and give everyone more time to cool off.

3. While doing this, have him get the info. about his dad being alive and etc, and then start to consider a trip to the magical world.

4. Let the second semester begin, and expand on some other plots/issues, and have Negi decide to bring everyone to the Magical World during Winter Break instead, and from there go through everything we see now.

You can explain the meaning of some bizarre set of syllables in the sides or on a page at the end of the volume/chapter or something, that's fine. But when the word spoken is something/one's NAME, you SPELL IT OUT.

Personally, I loved this part of the manga, and I felt the complete opposite of your opinion.

There are many moving parts, yes, but it felt natural. At this point, we've had 200+ chapters worth of characters building natural teamwork and relationships with each other. The giant group dynamics felt honestly earned, and this is the point of the manga where it really started to come together.

Shame about the ending, though.

I'd agree, IF at that point I'd liked everyone somewhat evenly. But I didn't.

Given how things have gotten the last few chapters, seems like the fan scanlations are the more accurate ones right now. Shame about the scan quality though. We still have 6 more volumes to go though, so hope it picks up and doesn't stay sloppy. I've seen way worse which were flatout bad or awfully translated, so lacking a little polish isn't too bad.

It seems like you're fine using the official scans until around volume 29 or so? Which isn't so bad, since that feels like well past the worst quality Negima scans. Official is still lightyears ahead in overall quality, but I don't think Negima's fan scans are too unreadable by that point.

I wish we could find someone who spoke Latin though. I would absolutely love to see who's correct on the fan vs official TLs for the spells, as most are in Latin, since they're so wildly different it seems like.

I'm more familiar with Fairy Tail's publication than Negima, but there were definitely problems behind the scenes. Though probably not that sort. You see, back in the '00s, a bunch of Kodansha's manga was being published by Del Rey. Then sometime around 2010ish, Kodansha decided to cut out the middle man and started Kodansha USA. Kodansha basically bought out Del Rey to get off the ground, and it delayed releases for a while as they got all the licenses settled and such. In theory that kept everything the same, but reality isn't so clean. Fairy Tail had the same translator throughout the series, but even with the same translator, editor, and letterer, Kodansha USA definitely has less attention to detail, and more attention on getting volumes out quick. After a couple years they changed letterers for reasons unknown, and at some point they changed editors as well. Both changes affected the quality of the english release.

Negima would have been subject to the same problems and more. At some point they changed translators from their initial one who had some glaring mistakes and obvious rewrites of minor dialogue, to a different one who I think they kept to the end. Then for the omnibus release, they had the translator for the final volumes go back and redo the translation of some of the early volumes.

So you'd really have to sit down and look at the credits for the series to figure out what change happened when, but this particular problem probably has to do with management wanting a letterer who was faster or cheaper, than with a letterer pushing out shoddy work in an attempt to save a contract.

That's sorta the reason why I started including that credit page, just in case anyone got curious.
And also to, y'know, credit the people who worked on it. Just seems polite.

I was going to post an example, but the fan translations I had on my computer looked different than I remember, and I checked another website and saw those scans looked way different too. Multiple copies of the same chapter floating around, so I can't be too sure if my memory has blended together a bit and mixed up details.

If you're offering though, I'd be curious to see the translation for one of the more used spells, the one the official TL calls Thunderous Gale.

That turned into this on the official TL. I'd post a fan translation or two, but I'm about to get pulled away for something and can't dig up some to compare with the multiple scans.

Otherwise, it's not that terrible, though they turned a single spirit into spirits and they seem to like using thunder instead of lightning for some reason.
