You know, Ritsuko might really be the most tragic character in the show.
We see her constantly grasp with the issue of her being a disposable asset to Gendos plan, as well as falling into the same trap as her mother did.
Add to this that Misato, likely her closest friend, and Kaji both leave her as the series goes on, really paints a bleak picture of her.
She loses herself in her work to avoid having to confront what she is, and she was probably coerced into working on Instrumentality just because she wanted to feel needed, like most of the characters on the show

she's a really underrated character imo, the way she falls apart and boils over really stuck with me on a rewatch. i think the fact that she's never a pov character adds to the execution in this case too.
it's also interesting how, unlike most of the cast who are remembering and grappling with the memory of their parents as kinda vague figures from their youth, just 'mother' and 'father', ritsuko's conflict with her own mother is predicated on a conflict between the two of them as people, with magi being split into her three identities writing that metaphor large.

its telling that she hold her tongue there instead of bringing up all the times misato was cavalier and hypocritical with pilot safety. on the whole it feels like misato was never really able to resolve the officers dilemma of caring about the people under her command (or rather, shinji) but also by virtue of the sitation needed to repeatedly put them into situations where death and injury are more than likely. she kinda vacillates between the two extremes, like in hat scene versus the titular 'personal hatred' scene in ep 12

Considering that she's such a major character, a parallel to Shinji, and is on the beach at the end, I feel that the actual HOW of her development is more important that us learning "oh Asuka got fixed too by the way".
I mean, we already got to go inside Asuka's head in EP 22, so it's not like this would break a rule by taking the viewpoint away from Shinji.
Furthermore, I'm curious to what characters like Misato, Rei and even her mother might say to her.

One funny thing though, after Kaji dies she kind of uses her appeal on Shigeru, ,(the bridge bunny in the glasses that has a crush on her) to get information on what's up behind the scenes.
Really illustrates how she slowly goes to the distant, man-on-a-mission, mindset once Kaji goes, like he was the only thing keeping her from going ahead and using people for her own needs.

no not at all. ultimately shinji is the main character and his life is the primary lens the series uses to examine the human condition, and as such his experience is prioritized in the limited runtime. the pacing concerns of a feature film are very different from an episodic series, where having an episode that features a look into the psyche of four characters instead of just the lead makes sense. it's a situation where more isn't more, splitting the focus and jumping back & forth between ultimately redundant scenes would be a huge blunder in the most critical sequence of the film, something that the tv series recognized too.
the actual how of her development is pointless in the strictest sense. the larger thematic and symbolic aspects are already covered in shinji's sequences, as is her relationship with shinji. the rest is secondary, compelling yes, but secondary. don't get me wrong she's my favorite character but what would it really add? like, would it add to the power of their final scene? would it make it more striking? more memorable?

Except you're forgetting that in Shinji's case, he was sad/anxious/depressed because he had convinced himself he wasn't good enough. That's why he turned to things like piloting the Eva for recognition in the first place.

He absolutely needs somebody to be there and show genuine compassion for him, be there for him emotionally, etc. Having somebody actually care about him as a person is important. This is why I believe that Shinji didn't really cause what we see in 3.0. Perhaps he catalyzed it, but certainly didn't cause such widespread damage to the planet itself. He was stopped relatively early by Kaworu, which meant he might've taken advantage of the situation and caused a proper Third Impact. Plus you gotta take into account the forces of NERV and SEELE, fighting against what would soon to be Wille.

I changed my mind. I was a Reifag in my teens and early adulthood when I was depressed. I got my shit together and am walking the path I want to walk now physically, mentally and spiritually and after a recent rewatch I'm all in for Asuka.
I guess I can relate more to her feelings of inadequacy and the trouble she had facing her repressed Jungian shadow, which Shinji is a literal projection of (one of the main reasons they are my favorite relationship in the show). I want to help set her straight like I did to myself and be the rock she needs to achieve self-acceptance.
