GoGo is fine to watch before Yes 5. In fact, newcomers should just watch GoGo and skip Yes 5 entirely -- at least until they start to run out of seasons and need to mine the dregs to scratch the Precure itch.
Yes 5 is pretty much a beta version. GoGo is the finished product. Superior in every meaningful respect, reworking what came before and adding in great new aspects of its own.

He had a pretty damn huge thing to protect -- his entire planet -- and that didn't give him the power to do so just because he wanted to. He tells them that if they're not willing to die fighting, they have no business using the word "protect".

It's all opinions but I think you're underselling the FW duo. The most standout thing to me in FW was how Nagisa and Honoka reacted believably to everything instead of being perfect superheroes from the onset. Them not liking each other for about 11 episodes since they're complete opposites, Nagisa feeling guilt over killing the first general and was struggling to justify it, Honoka not knowing how to handle Kiriya shutting down her sense of justice and being unable to deal with his moral greyness, etc. really made them feel like real people. Saki and Mai aren't bad but they definitely felt more like characters made to entertain little girls.

I enjoyed more Rider today, user here is sort of right. He couldn't protect his planet and due to that it got destroyed by a dark force (Darknest most likely), he together with Tenjou and Kappard (not Eyewon I must remark) at least make it credible that Kappard see how devastated Galorge was, also setting doubts on his mind as well as a possible face turn. The powerup scene lacked emotion because it was

The only thing I WON'T complain about in this episode was Galogre's fight. It was brutal and really well-choreographed. Characters becoming Riders is in general far more common than characters becoming Cures. Female Riders are a fairly common thing but they're either secondary/tertiary characters who end up transforming a few times or they die. Or both. For example last season had a female Rider transform in the second to last episode as a cliffhanger, and come the final episode she dies without actually being in a fight.
A female Rider being featured so prominently in the lineup is new.

I think comparing how Ichika deals with her missing mom compared to how Hikaru deals with her missing dad is a pretty good way to tell the difference between Kirakira and Star Twinkle. It's not just her either, look at Aoi's desire to be free from her predestined path and Himari's desire to not be the kind of person she is for example.

Toei is very inconsistent when it comes to Precure and taking risks. Precure is just really inconsistent in general because of all the different writers they have every season. Even after the big stink parents made about Miki's antics in Fresh, Toei then gave us the most revealing midriff in history plus big boob and pregnancy gags in Heartcatch. And in a season with a literal #metoo fag loving libtard as the head writer we got a pink with the biggest titties since Fresh who canonically has sex with a man and gives birth live on TV in front of millions of little girls. I'd say the difference is that Gentaro isn't forced into the Pink role, and so doesn't have to make moralizing speeches and be a team leader. Those are where Hikaru fails to deliver; when she's actually doing Gentaro-like stuff, she works fine. The "one small faceplant for mankind" gag was great, for example.

I think part of what makes this go wrong with those kinds of characters is that the tragic backstory just ends up being framed as a strength anyhow. It's a "look at the difficult thing you experienced but managed to overcome!" trait, rather than an honest-to-goodness tragedy. Because whatever doesn't kill you (eventually) makes you stronger, right?
Or sometimes it legit makes you weaker. Or more vulnerable. Or more insecure. And you learn to manage it a little bit better, maybe even enough to make your life a bit more comfortable. But it remains a weak point. Like Himari.
But it's not just those two situations, there's a lot of ways you can handle it. The first just tends to feel like a cop-out, a cheap bid for sympathy with no real consequence.

I think one of the bigger failures of ST people don't notice or talk about is that Elena doesn't really feel like they're trying something new. It's just Nao but Mexican. I guess that's experimental in some way but I almost get the impression they don't want it to feel special so they try as hard as possible to not make it stand out and succeeded a little to well. And if that was all there was to it then whatever, there's always that one cure that falls by the wayside. But it just feels like a symptom of a larger problem more than anything else.
I don't even hate ST it's been a fun enough ride, but I get the feeling come next year it's gonna be "just another season."

Gentaro was the heart sure but the point was no one else was. He struggled in befriending people. Mio was a bitch who viewed him as trash, Shun wanted to prove he was superior since he was feeling increasingly emasculated, JK was a scumbag who just used people, Tomoko was a weirdo who didn't think someone as friendly as him could relate to her, Kengo resented Gentaro for taking his role, Ryusei was a complete cunt who secretly hated him, and that's just the main cast. Gentaro's simplicity works because the cast around him are complex. Outside of Cosmo, everyone in ST is already kind so there isn't the same sense of satisfaction when they actually do open up.

god imagine being a roadie for a precure kig show and then one of the kig actress got injured and you have to take her place and after the event the crew would tease you on how cute you were acting and then the zipper broke and you have to stay as a kig for at least 12 more hours
