If I remember correctly they connect minds to an avatar. The catch is that the connection is so strong that you end up killing yourself IRL when an avatar dies.

Even if she succeeds, it's just a slap on a wrist. IRL bitchslap has more lasting impact than that.
And almost every non-trivial fighting encounter is like that. Everyone pretends that it's a big deal and I have no idea why.
